Laptop Recommendations??

I am going to be purchasing a new laptop in the next week or so and would like some pointers on which way I should go. Right now I am leaning toward this guy:

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2361498,00.asp

I want: large storage capacity for music and pictures and I want to be able to play games and watch videos on it.

And I want all of this for as close to $800 as I can get....

:begging :feedback

We have two Sony laptops - love them. Not this particular model that you have mentioned. I have never known anyone to be sorry they got a Sony. My only regret is that one of them has a 17 inch screen - I will NEVER do that with a laptop again!!!!!

Whatever one you get, you really should have it shipped out to me first. That way I can... you know, break it in for you, make sure you got a good deal and that it will hold up to the rigors of use.

If I have any problems with it or spill coffee on the keyboard I'll be certain to ship back to you right away.

Yeah, I had already thought that the bigger screens seem a little cumbersome. I don't want to feel like I am hauling furniture around! LOL!

What kind of games? If you are looking at serious 3d gaming, forget getting a laptop or be prepared to spend close to 2k. The Video chip/card, is what you need to look at when thinking of playing games. Otherwise to watch videos and all the other stuff you can go low to $350 as long as the HD is what you like. Even then you can get rather large thumb drives for next to nothing now adays

Re: Laptop Recommendations??

IMO Sony's are not the way to go. Why? They are way overpriced for what you get. I like HPs for cheap laptops. And for serious gaming they have a big hunkin laptop with no battery life for gaming. Also check other companies...no name companies. Alienware used to be one but they got bought out by some other company.

Dell too, but I hate mail order

No, not hard core gaming, but I do like playing Sims, and some other downloaded hidden object, and puzzle type games.

I just don't want any freezing up or lagging. My daughter has an HP and likes it really well, but this will be my first laptop, so I want to make the right decision. It will be a loooong while before I can afford another one.

Re: Laptop Recommendations??

I love my Gateway because it's red. :D

Seriously, it's been a great machine, the only problem I've had is that it tends to overheat fairly easily if there's not a cooling pad under it. Mainly overheats if I'm watching something online. (that's probably my angels looking out for me, trying to save my heathen soul ;))

My daughter has a Dell, and her power cord quit working after a few months. They replaced it quickly, though.

The kids' laptop is an Acer, and it's been good so far.

My husband has a Dell netbook, and he loves it.

Praxeas 04-06-2010 05:28 PM

Re: Laptop Recommendations??

Dell Netbooks are nice, more expensive than Acers

Laptops should not over heat if made right. Often the reason is where it is placed. Laptops should be on a hard service and the vent should not be blocked in any way

For stuff like that the two main things to consider is what sort of Video chip it has. Id want a Nvidia or ATI. Then how much video memory is allocated. Video chips don't have their own memory usually. They use what RAM is installed, which brings me to the next point. How much RAM is installed. If it was me I'd want at least 3 gigs. My HP has 2 and it still drags some.

Check Fry's too. They have a store in Concord and one in Woodland hills

Cool thing about buying a Dell is you can pick and choose what you want. You can add stuff, take away stuff all online

Re: Laptop Recommendations??

I've had Sonys that I liked pretty well, but their build quality for their laptops isn't great (e.g. Keyboards are cheapy, casing is prone to wear). My last several computers have been Thinkpads (once IBM, now Lenovo). And I have had great luck with them. I currently have the w500 model, but they have good cheaper ones as well. They do mail order, but also sell lower-end stuff in retail stores.

I have a HP G70 with graphics by NVIDIA... lots of storage, it was a little over $800.00, but the screen is 17 and it is too big to lug around.. I will never do that again. It would do everything you need it to. I'd swap it out for a smaller one though. We like it... but I love my daughter's friends HP which is smaller.

Mine has 4 gigs, and has the Nvidia, does everything we need and isn't slow, so happy except for the size.

The only thing that has kept me back from apple is their waaaaay disproportionate pricing. Basically they are charging you 1000 for their OS, because these days the line between mac hardware and pc hardware is very thin.

Actually, for a notebook: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Compaq+-...ract_desc=null

I bought one of these back in January when my gateway notebook (that I paid $1600 for 4 years ago) died and went to hell.

$329.00

I am not a gamer, but it would run stuff like the sims no problem. I run Adobe CS4 on it with no problem, plenty fast, InDesign and Photoshop are both pretty intense applications. Internet on it is fast (wireless-N, dvd payback and straming video on it is flawless.

No complaints at all on it. I have even grown to like Windows 7
