Which one stands for hugs and which one stands for kisses?

I'd like to post a poll but I don't know how!

(We're having a big difference of opinion where I work!)

I always thought the X' s were for kisses too! But one of the nurses I work with who started us all wondering thinks the X's are for hugs!

Re: Xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

X stands for two lips coming together. >< then squash them together and you get the X.

O is for the circle formed when you put your arms around someone and draw them in.

that's my opinion and I'm stickin' to it. Altho I have been known to be wrong so you might be able to convince me otherwise. But if you can't convince me, I'm sticking with my own opinion. But feel free to try, I don't have anything major to do until later today...................

According to dictionary.com, one definition of "x" is:

--(used at the end of letters, telegrams, etc., to indicate a kiss.)

Oxford English Dictionary also agrees. ;)

I can't agree with that as it is not spoken in the order that it's written.

XOXO - Hugs and Kisses

It doesn't say Kisses and Hugs. That just doesn't make sense to say it one way and then write it backwards.

Awwww, precious!! I'm not a knick Knack person but, it's my grandson, so that changes things. :heart

Have you ever seen those vinyl wall lettering designs that are popular right now? I saw a kit yesterday that said, "Boy - n., a noise with dirt on it." I should have bought it! LOL!

Yea, really tiny. I'm so glad that Thumbelina opened a boutique for the "tiny folks". We don't want to say "midgets". It's not politically correct! :toofunny

Don't give us that dictionary stuff.
We don't accept no dictionary as authoritative.

What does the UPC Manual say,
and what does the tradition of the UPC elders say?

I think the Manual would say only holy kisses, and no full body hugs. :coffee2

It's like the various views of the Gospel!!! :toofunny

Quote:

Another interpretation assumes X as the crossed arms of a hug and O as the puckered lips of a kiss, as the order is normally spoken "Hugs and Kisses" which would correspond to the order that the x's and o's are written.

I agree!

But, I honestly have to say that I do like this interpretation, which would agree with Margie and Bratti's reference she found.

Quote:

The use of XOXO goes back to the use of an X or cross, which was considered as good as a sworn oath in times before most people could write and therefore used the X in the same way a signature is used today — a mark of one's word. An X at the end of a letter or document was often kissed as a seal of honesty, in much the same way one would kiss a Bible or kiss the fingers after making the sign of the Christian cross. Thus the X came to represent a kiss in modern times.
Still it stands to reason that it needs to follow an order. - XOXO - Hugs and Kisses.

If they had started out with OXOX - Hugs and Kisses, I wouldn't argue the point. :D

I have to post something that Ted Nugent wrote because he is an avid gun owner and user! LOL!

Quote:

"All riflemen know that the little 5.56 round is a bare minimum caliber for any medium sized big game, but with the 60-grain Black hills soft point in the magazine, a well place shot will indeed do the trick. Watching Rocco practice at the range made me proud. He was Sgt. York-dead-on- at 100 yards every shot, and I knew if he had a crack at this 100-pound boar, the pork chops were as good as grilled. Aim small, miss small."

"And that he did. Young Rocco took a solid rest on his upright knees in a sitting position, the handsome hog paused as it emerged from the wood line, and in a fluid ballet of sniper proficiency, my son snicked off the safety, settled into his sling, slowly exhaled and pow-whoomp! Pork chops, baby!"

I thought "X's" were for hugs and "O's" were for kisses.

I know the phrase, "XOXOXOXO" stands for "Hugs and Kisses" and not "Kisses and Hugs".

I've never seen it like, "OXOXOXOX".

"Hugs and Kisses" with the "X" always the first letter in, "XOXOXO"
