Water, Water Everywhere!!

We have had the worst flooding I've ever seen in my life the past few days. Our mayor has declared a state of emergency and asked all churches to cancel services today to keep as many people as possible off the roads. The road that runs in front of our house has a 30 foot sinkhole just up the road from us. The road was completely flooded the other way, so we were stranded for a while.

We have two church members who own car lots and those are completely submerged - can't even hardly see the tops of the cars. We have others who have offices and showrooms that are flooded about waist-high. I just heard that one of our family's home was flooded and they had to swim in the backyard to resuce their dogs. They probably have lost everything.

It is really rare for anyone here to have flood insurance on their home, because we aren't in a flood zone. I know we don't personally have it on ours, but we sit up higher than anyone else in our neighborhood.

Nashville is terrible also - two of the interstates are flooded and may not be open for a few days. My son was supposed to drive back to M'boro today, but I don't think he can get back for his exams tomorrow. Hope he has an understanding professor!!

Seen anyone building an ark in their back yard?

I just braved the deluge of rain to make the obligatory Sunday night trip to Wal Mart for dog food.

My SIL just told me they are evacuating the Opryland Hotel. Should be interesting since it has 3,000 rooms so even if they are only at 50% capacity that is still 1500 rooms with most probably being occupied by two persons on a weekend.

Sherri,

They announced on the news tonight that all finals at MTSU are cancelled for tomorrow. Sounds like your son has one more day to study!

Lambuth's graduation was supposed to be yesterday. They called Tabo Saturday morning and told her that all the Sat stuff was cancelled and that graduation would be postponed. It is scheduled for this morning but I'm kind of dreading driving down there because I know there were a couple of sinkholes near the hospital!!

We had 13 1/2 inches of rain in our area of Nashville over the last two days. I have never in my life seen it rain so hard over two days with hardly any breaks! Simply amazing!

Today I kinda' feel like Noah did after walking out of the ark for the first time after the flood. I've been hunkered down in my house watching the weather warnings on TV for the last two days. Today the sun is shining and I'm venturing out! :):bliss

Heavenly sunshine!!! Don't think any Tennessean will forget this weekend of horrors!! Praying for all who have lost loved ones and/or homes in this flood. Plenty of work ahead for the state to recover.

We just got our electricity on about an hour ago. It's been out ever since the tornado touched down here. Flooding here is bad. I'm going to walk out and get photos of the flooding on our road in a little while. I can't get far with the van... roads are flooded. Two of three ways out are closed due to water from the Hatchie River being over the road. It's risen 18 inches here in less than 24 hours, and isn't expected to crest until Thursday. Some residents may need a boat to get out of here before the water goes back down. :(

Just wanted to check in and let everyone know we are okay if they aren't connected on facebook to have seen the text message post from me before now.

I have some things that thawed in the freezer that I need to go take care of. I'll post tornado damage photos later when I have time to rest and upload them to the computer from the camera.

It's so weird to think the same water that makes our grass grow, waters our vegetation, and splashes waves that are so relaxing can wreck such havoc. Water is amazing!

Re: Water, Water Everywhere!!

Well, it ain't over yet.

Just talked to someone at the Sheriff's dept.... apparently the Hatchie River is supposed to crest on Thursday. The flood waters are already as high now as we've ever seen it --when Kara was born 17 years ago. It hasn't been this high since that time... we're looking at record breaking flood waters on the rise tonight-- and for a few more days yet. Let's pray that our house is high enough up on this hill!!

Two of our exits out of here are flooded-- one of the roads has water across the road that is approximately 10-12 ft deep at least. There's one other cut-through path to get out, that had about 6 inches of water flowing across it this morning, but the ditches have been cleaned out today-- hopefully that will help keep it from flooding again.

The lady I spoke with at the sheriff's dept said that my road IS on the list where they are sending officers to tomorrow to ask people to consider evacuation. I guess I'll know tomorrow what the officials think about the hill I live on by whether we get asked to evacuate. I doubt they will-- but if they do, you can count on me packing up what we need and getting out. I'm not having the snakes from the hatchie Swimming around in my house with ME in it. :D

For Tamor-- Here are some photos found on facebook of flooding in Corinth MS. Don't plan on shopping there anytime real soon. :( Hopefully the link will work.

I saw photos of KMart & Kroger earlier. Merchandise was floating in the parking lots of the stores. Stores were over knee deep in water inside. If I can find them again, I'll add a link.

Hope everyone is ok. I was watching the weather channel yesterday and saw the pictures of flooded roads and homes.

Twice I've lived in a city that received 10+" of rain in a day, so I've seen that type of damage before. It's always amazing that water is reponsible for so much "mess".

Authorities were saying today that it was a 500 year flood! Unbelievable!

These are amazing. I've seen some others on facebook too. Tabo lives in Corinth and she said it was awful.

I'm in Belize, but I just heard that Opryland Hotel (where the JCM reunion was just held) has six feet of water in it. The water is up to the railings on the Cascade Restaurant!!

They said our river in Jackson was 50 feet above the 100 year flood line, whatever that means!!

The DQ has water in it - lots of good memories when I was a young teen - grandparents would take me there for a treat when I visited - have family in Dyersburg, but all live on the north and west side - My 90 year old aunt lived thru the 1937 flood - had to be boated out of their home.
