Mixed feelings about the Hawkins or Oprah? (or both)

Re: Tribute to Edwin Hawkins

Renda,

It was Walter who passed, not Edwin

The funeral will be webcast live tomorrow 11AM PST.

About the video .... Not necessarily about Hawkins. I'm not a huge fan of Black Gospel - but I do recognize his contribution to Gospel Music and there are some of his songs that I really like.

Is all that as clear as mud ?:toofunny

Not so much Hawkins - more what Oprah said and some of the other commentary. Quite honestly, I don't know if all that was about Jesus "showing up" or not.

Please know that while I am not a huge fan of Black Gospel, I am not so much biased because of who they are or what they wear etc (though Oprah saying this stuff while having admitted believing there are many ways to God with Jesus being one of them, totally reeks!) ... I might say the same thing about some UPC services.

This was from 2006.

I love black gospel, so I guess that's why it appeals to me so much. We sang so many of their songs at youth camps!

Just so many memories!

I think they DID feel something - how could you not?

Yes, I agree. I watched this the other night for the first time, and Diane Sawyer's remarks especially seemed genuine.

And Janet Jackson as well...

Marcus...did you go to the memorial concert?

Here is another song to start your day. It's from the first Love Alive LP...the snap, crackle and pop of vinyl brings back memories.

If memory and ear serve me well, this is Lynette singing the lead...

Changed - Going Up Yonder - - - so many bring back great memories!!!!

Marietta Wolf sang the lead to Going Up Yonder - - always got the crowd going!

Re: Tribute to Walter/Edwin Hawkins

Please indulge me, y'all...I promise this is the last one, but who can hear this intro and not be flooded with warm memories of back in the day?

This song was sung at the funeral a zillion years ago of former Vice President Humphrey, and at countless other funerals, including my daddy.

It was his request before he passed that the choir sing it and my niece sing the lead...

Going Up Yonder...Tramaine Hawkins on lead...

Or just another number
With a tragic end...

But You didn't see fit
To let none of these things be...

And every day by Your power
You keep on keeping me...

Wow!!

Can we lift our hands this morning, and say, "Thank you, Lord...!!" :bliss

I'll stop with this one...I could post all day!

If I had to choose a WH fav of all time, this one would no doubt be it. I cannot tell you the number of times I have prayed...

Lord You promised to be with me
Through the storm
And through the rain
Lord, You are my everything!

Enjoy and be blessed...Brenda Roy on lead vocal...

Is there any way I can make it
Seems I've got so far to go
Though it may not easy
I have this assurance
That You promised
Always to see me through

Every turn a new beginning
Something never dealt with before
There I am in the midst of the storm
And I cry, "Lord...I just want to die, Lord"
Then I fall right back in Your loving arms

Looking back every time
Seeing each mountain I have climbed
Knowing it was really You
You carried me right on through

Some tears and some pain
But I'm going on just the same
Lord, You promised to be with me
Through the storm
And through the rain
Lord, You are my everything
:thumbsup

I've never heard of this person before. That is some good music. Thanks for sharing. Been listening to them all on YouTube. :thumbsup

Strange for Janet Jackson to say she never felt anything like that before. Sad that she hasn't been around enough spiritual influence that she can just now say something like that.

Well, PO it's because the Catholic church choir didn't sing his songs!!!

Lord, all these just take me right back to my youth! Loved them then, love them now!

I think the Jacksons were raised JW, and I'm not sure what type of music, if any they sing at the Kingdom Hall.

Glad you like the music...these songs are timeless.

My problem was not with Black Gospel OR the Hawkins - yes, there are MANY of their songs that I like and remember. My problem with the original post was with the Oprah thing. I have a major problem with her.

IMHO - nobody could sing "Goin' Up Yonder" quite like Marietta Wolfe! :thumbsup
