Hugh Rose Passed Away

Hugh Rose passed away tonight at 9:10 p.m.

Re: Hugh Rose

Sad to hear this news. My prayers will be with the family. I am at that age where the folks who were the movers and shakers in the UPC of my youth are now reaching the end of their journey in this life and moving on to eternity.

As a child I can remember listening to Hugh Rose's voice on Harvestime over KJNP radio in North Pole, Alaska.

Definitely something different to mix things up. I remember hearing him at GC years ago... his unique and genuine style was effective.

I believe Bro. Hugh Rose and Sis. Jean Urshan were cousins. She was a Rose!

I loved to hear Bro. Rose sing The Lord's Prayer, Down From His Glory, and others!

May God send peace and comfort to Sis. Nila Rose and their family, in Jesus Name!

It seems as though someone has a complaint about everyone. But I've never heard anyone say a bad word about Hugh Rose. He was a gentleman. Although I'm now far removed from his circle, he would still send our family cards during our challenging times. I and my family are deeply saddened by his passing.

Actually, I think Nila was a Habig; that's how Jean Urshan and Nila Rose were kin.

I never knew Hugh Rose well personally. I did meet him when I was on the Louisiana District Harvestime board. You wouldn't think, as sophisticated as he was (real sophistication, not fake) that he'd be down to earth. But he was down to earth.

I feel a little nostalgic and sad. I left the UPC long ago and will never go back--but I go get nostalgic seeing, as DJ said, the men who were the giants, movers and shakers when we were young--Mangun, Urshan, Rose, Pugh, Burr, Oggs, Barnes--growing old, feeble and passing away, some almost in obscurity.

I remember one of our "extravaganza" entertainment spectacles we put on at JCM during Music Conference, 1977. It's a wonder I remember, because most of those I try to forget. We usually bombed. I always said we should have limited what we did at those things to "church Christmas banquet" entertainment; brief, funny skits. But no, we always tried to put on a Hollywood production we did not have time to rehearse.

Anyway, in this one, I was G. A. Mangun. Sue Miller, tall and willowy, was Joan Ewing. Doodle Dennis was Murrell Ewing. Pam Hurst was Jean Urshan. Kelvin Alexander was Hugh Rose.

Or ... as we spoofed him, "Huge" Rose.

Looking back, while that was all in fun, the name seemed to fit him. He was huge ... larger than life in his personality and musical talent.

Hey, he gave some balance. There was nothing wrong with a classical, "opera tenor" style singer in the UPC.

Sure, Harvestime got kind of hokey. But Hugh Rose was perfect for it in the 1950s and 1960s--he could have hosted a game show or a Bob Hope-type variety show and probably been wildly successful.

My condolences to the family.

Another of the notable UPC "second generation" is gone--another one passing away that reminds me I am not so young anymore.

Sadly--sadly for me only in a nostalgic sense--no one seems to be taking their places.

Thanks for the correction. I was mistaken!:thumbsup

I dont think you can say no one is taking their place ,it seems to me that you have to be around as long as they have and stay strong, like they did. Then in the end, maybe we can say there goes a whatever type figure from way back when.I mean did we know in the beginning that Bro Urshan, Bro Mangun etc etc. were going to be the larger than life persons that they turned out to be.Give it time and hopefully we will see history repeat itself.

That would mean there should be someone already working towards that.....I agree with Tim.

I agree with Tim & Renda. It's not about "personalities" it's about character. These men had Christian character above the other things they had. Perfect? Not a chance and that is not what I mean. They were men of character and what I see is many men of personality. Character has a way of exalting someone when they're not looking for that. A person of character generally doesn't know that they've become "successful."

Two men specifically remind me of that: Hugh Rose and James Stewart (former Ohio Dist. Supt.) Both men, from Ohio, befriended me when I was fresh out of the hippy culture and hardly more than a few months saved. Both never forgot my name whenever they would see me. Bro. Stewart would even come sit with me at camp for breakfast instead of at the "District Official's" table.

These men were not about politics or power. They were servants who cared about the "least of these." That is the void I see today. I see a lot personalities but not many of "character." I know they're out there but their numbers don't seem to be too large. I hope and pray that I can do these men "proud" for what they deposited in me. They never sat me down to "teach" me anything, but they taught me volumes about the important things...people! Big shoes to fill indeed. I just wish there more who were up for the challenge. Maybe there are and I just can't see them. I know that's possible. :D

It unfortunately does seem increasingly unlikely, with the UPCI ministry having a median age of 54, only a few hundred of 9,000 plus ministers are under the age of 35. And it seems lately that the leadership is going out of its way to run the remaining young ministers away.

Gentlemen preachers like Pugh and Rose are a dying breed, and I agree it does not appear the next generation has followed suit.

I have great memories of Bro. Rose leading the Camp Meeting Choir in Colorado in the late seventies.....wow those were the days.....no one could get the folks to sing like Bro. Rose....an awesome and gentle man. Loved him and so sad to hear of his passing but I know that heaven is rejoicing!!!
