My daughter and I spent an afternoon on a mesa south of town. When they were young my kids asked me where the "outskirts of town" were in our town. I arbitrarily selected a spot and drove them there. It's been sort of a destination for us from time to time since then. Now my kids are grown, and "the town" has grown around the outskirts as well.

That's Pike's Peak in the distance on the left, below. The sort of jagged outcropping near the center background is "Devil's Head." Most folks around here just call it "Deckers" for the town of that name nearby. This is where the South Platte Canyon opens up onto the plains. The river passes to the right and is out of view.
