Are Fat People Going to Hell?
Does being fat = gluttony?
Are fat people going to Hell? |
Re: Are Fat People Going to Hell?
There's more scripture for this then a lot of other issues!!!

Re: Are Fat People Going to Hell?
Oh dear... my Bible says that the fat belong to the Lord. lol
Leviticus 3:16 |
Re: Are Fat People Going to Hell?
Oral Roberts University got a lot of flack in the late 70's for restricting obese people in the University. Candy bars were replaced by healthier foods in the school. Obese people had to sign a contract saying they would participate in a weight loss program. The issue hit the national news and ORU came under fire! Expelled students complained the University was being discriminatory.
I recall it being a news issue back then. |

We are not qualified to answer that question.

Re: Are Fat People Going to Hell?
There are medical conditions that impede weight loss.
There are medications that cause weight gain. I think there's a difference between gluttony and being over weight. God knows the heart and the full situation. It's not for us to judge, imo. |

I see many obsessive compulsive disorders the other direction also. Exercise fanatics. |
Re: Are Fat People Going to Hell?
Hypo-thyroidism causes weight gain and just try taking the weight off without the proper medications.
And just try getting the proper medications...that's another story. Let's not even bring up what happens to women with their hormones and weight gain and the difficulty trying to take that weight off. This is a bigger issue then just gluttony and if we don't know the whole situation behind why someone is over-weight we're not in a position to judge, imo. |

ADEPHAGIA was the goddess of eatings one full or gluttony who possessed a temple in one of the Greek colonies on Sicily. Self indulgence and excess. Both self indulgence and excess while refering sometimes to food also apply to many other behaviors. |

Re: Are Fat People Going to Hell?
Of course fat people are going to hell. They are all lazy inconsiderate slobs that don't care about themselves or anything else. Oh and their fatness and laziness is driving this country into the dirt.
(I hope the sarcasm is detected). |
Re: Are Fat People Going to Hell?
This issue has become Pentecostals thorn in the side. For years we have condemned other people for abusing their Temple, but now we have become FAT. Obesity is rampant in our movement and the World is asking; "How can you tell me to stop smoking when you have every known health disorder known to man because you EAT anything and EVERYTHING!"
This happens to every Religion that grinds down the unmerciful road of visual Holiness. It’s ridiculous to think that people will burn in Hell for being fat, and it’s also ridiculous to think that someone who uses nicotine will burn in Hell. |

Re: Are Fat People Going to Hell?
I have a disease called Dercum's Syndrom (Adipose Dolorosa). The main part of the problem is a very painful lumps, hundreds of them. MOST people who have Dercums also retain large pads of fat. You CAN'T diet them away. Each person gets them in different places. Mine are on my back and sides. (Which leaves me with very thin legs and no hind end) I have gotten used to the pain, but I really want to throw a hymnal a the caring "saints" who offer weight loss tips without knowing what's going on. Maybe we should pray for people and MYOB.

[QUOTE=NotforSale;994891]At least they look happy!!
We welcome them at our church. In many proud and vain assemblies, if you look wrong you get alienated. We invite drug users, alcoholics and all those that aren't good enough for the superior congregations. Hookers also. |

I had a dear friend who was very over-weight. One day she recieved a note left for her at church. I can't to this day stomach what was written to this dear saint. All I can say is he or she is fortunate this dear woman was a rock solid Christian and walked in forgivness from the start. She went on to be with the Lord never revealing the author of such hate. And yes, we should indeed pray for people with MYOB. God bless you. |
Re: Are Fat People Going to Hell?
God gave us each a metabolic rate. It varies from one person to the next. He will not penalize us for what He gave us. However, if we deliberately overeat or eat unhealthily, it doesn't matter if we're thin or heavy, we ought to do better. It isn't Heaven or Hell, though. It's healthy or unhealthy.
Telling someone that they need to diet because they are overweight, while you gorge because you don't see yourself as unhealthy is like telling someone they can't smoke because they have some signs of lung disease while you smoke 10 packs a day because you haven't yet been diagnosed. 1 Cor 3:17 isn't about what goes into a man--even smoke or drugs or alcohol or too much food. It's about division in the church. It doesn't say "If you destroy your temple" but if anyone does. Division is destructive. Smoking, alcohol, and orders of one pound bacon cheeseburgers with extra mayo, super-sized fries, and big gulp sodas are all unhealthy and inadvisable in large quantity, but none are Heaven/Hell issues, and none is sinful in the first taste. |

I haven't read the 4 pages of this thread, but fat doesn't always equate to gluttony.

I finally smartened up and lost twenty pounds lately by simply thinking that I can eat any food I want, but to just eat enough that I need, and no more, despite it being tempting to go past my required need for enough food, and keep tasting the stuff and eating more. lol

Re: Are Fat People Going to Hell?
What constitutes "fat?" Morbidly obese? Overweight? Chubby? Anything outside of the doctor-dictated healthy weight range? :coffee2
Man, I used to be a LOT thinner and a lot healthier. We're a lot busier than we used to be, with 6 people + pets in the household, and it gets really difficult (and expensive) to eat all lean meats, veggies/fruit and organics. I've probably put on 20 lbs. since my son was born, and I was at least 30 lbs overweight when I got pregnant with him. *sigh* Do the math: my petite frame is packing 50 extra lbs. and I'm not particularly happy about it. Did I get that way by sitting down and eating whole tubs of ice cream or a full pan of brownies? Definitely not. :rolleyes2 Here are my thoughts: 1. Food is a necessity to human survival, unlike other addictive substances. Therefore, you can't tell people to simply abstain from food, whereas you could tell them to abstain from unnecessary substances. 2. Abstinence is often easier than moderation and discernment. 3. Saying that someone who is "fat is going to hell" is like saying someone with "lung disease is going to hell." It's kind of stupid to pinpoint the symptoms of a problem as the sin when that symptom can be shared with a number of causes. A person can develop lung disease after they've quite smoking; we wouldn't say they were going to hell for having the disease, would we? 4. Americans in general are overweight and unhealthy, and it's not just portion sizes that are the problem. It's the type of foods we eat, coupled with a lack of exercise. We are increasingly bound to desks and computers instead of working outside, we drive everywhere instead of riding a bike or walking, and we ride escalators and elevators instead of taking the stairs. We even have to set aside special time for exercise that our grandparents got every day just by going about their daily routine. 5. Gluttony is a sin. Now define "gluttony." It isn't just a matter of eating an extra piece of pie on Thanksgiving is it? If it is, there are a lot of hell-bound people on this forum, and that would include the skinny ones who ate until their stomachs hurt. :coffee2 (Oh, yeah, you know who you are, and you know you did. :D) Bottom line: This is a cultural problem, not a sin problem.
