A sign you are not living on mission...

"A good sign of Christians who aren't living on mission is that we sit around and debate theology."

Do you agree?

What do you mean? We are Apostolic and we don't agree on ANYTHING!

Re: A sign you are not living on mission...

Perhaps the quote was misrepresented, taken out of context even. Maybe what is meant is "If all you do, to the exclusion of everything else..." or even "... the majority of your time is spent arguing... this is a good indication you are not living your life on mission with others."

We all know the types, while even fearing ourselves to be the type. We spend more time arguing our preferences and minute theological points with others than we do sharing God's story.

Disagree. I think that when Jesus was talking to the scholars in the temple, some people would have considered that debating. Discussing and learning from your friends doesn't have to take away from our "mission" of spreading the good news. Now if that's all you do, then it could possibly be a hindrance.

Edited to add: Just saw your next post explaining. lol

See - Proved my point! We can't agree if we agree or disagree or if it is mature or immature or what! What's the point again? ;-)

Re: A sign you are not living on mission...

Wrestling with what is true, sharing discussions about what is right among friends is one thing... being one who spends all their time debating others is another, and usually speaks to a heart issue, I may add.

There is a time for argument, but it certainly should not summarize our life. If people see you (or me) as one who loves to argue and debate, maybe we have something wrong :)

On this very night, ten years ago, along this very stretch of road in a dense fog just like this. I saw the worst accident I ever seen. There was this sound, like a garbage truck dropped off the Empire State Building... And when they pulled the driver's body from the twisted, burning wreck. It looked like this...

If that is all we do, yes. But people can be on a mission and still debate theology.

Hmm, IMO and considering theology's first four letters is t-h-e-o, geeeee kinda like THEORY, I'd say theology is nothing but ideas and opinions, which is how organized religion was formed. But I digress (sense the sarcasm)...

ummmmmm.. THEOS means GOD in Greek. (ahem). That is where the term comes from. THEOLOGY is study of God.

Theory comes from THEORIA meaning "a looking at, viewing, beholding." Big difference.

I stand corrected, though I didn't include the "S" in my initial post. However, thank you for reminding me (seriously, with no sarcasm). Granted "theology" is the study of God, but why so many debate it is far above and beyond me. God's word is just that: God's word.

So, to make time to debate it, I honestly think those people who are more interested in debating rather than being part of the mission should go back to school. But, that's just me...

It is true that some folks are ever learning and never coming to the knowledge of the truth. We need balance in everything.

I think there's a difference between those who wish to sit around and debate all day and those who wish to exchange and discuss. That line seems very fine at times though.

Re: A sign you are not living on mission...

In reality, holy men of God wrote when they were inspired of the Spirit. Our understanding requires more than a practical hermeneutic (though that is helpful), but it also requires the Spirit. This is where debating falls short.

I'd say that if that is all one does, the statement is true. But Christians and Jews are notorious for discussing and debating doctrine. It's what we do to sharpen one another.
