Youth Camp Haircuts

This reminded me of youth camp. I had to get more than one haircut the first day of youth camp. Anyone else have to get a trim upon arrival?:lol

I never had to get a haircut, but I always had my Christian rock taken away. No listening to White Heart or Whitecross or Petra for me at youth camp!

Re: Youth Camp Haircuts

Never happened to me either. But then I only went to Apostolic camps for Family Camp.

I will tell you tho that the camp I went to before I became Apostolic was every bit as strict as the Apostolic camp. Actually, in some ways it was even more so. One of the hard things was that the rules they had for the other camp were not rules that we were used to living by outside of camp. For example, at camp, we had to wear dresses - and to our knees. Never pants or shorts. At our home church those things were fine. So it was a much bigger adjustment. The rules at the Ohio UPC Camp were pretty much the same as what we lived with every day anyway - except for the 6" rule.

My hair was always short enough and the music I brought was pure, but nevertheless I did get into continues trouble for our late night poker games...... And the fact they were held in the girls dorm probably didn't help.

I never went to Youth Camp so I have no idea what the rules were. The girl I later married was baptized and received the Holy Ghost Baptism around the age of 13 and did go to youth camp for a couple of years. The biggest shocker to her was when our pastor's grand daughter and another teen age girl that she knew got new hair cuts for Youth Camp. "Long" back then was usually just trimmed but was still considered long if it was longer than the guys hair which was pretty short back then.

Yup. My first Louisisana Senior Youth Camp back in 1973 when I was 14 if memory serves me. At registration they culled out about a half dozen of us and had us sit in the sanctuary. Then when registration was complete they took us into the La. district boardroom where some minister proceeded to tell us that if we didn't get haircuts we were going to grow up to be homosexuals.

I should also mention that apparently this was great entertainment for the La. District UPC preachers who might be around because there was a group of them lined up around the walls and grinning and laughing at our discomfort.

We were then told that if we wanted to stay at camp we had to march to the admin bldg where a guy was set up to give us haircuts. I had been raised around this nonsense so was not totally shocked. I took it in stride but felt really bad for two boys who were not Pentecostal but guests of a Pentecostal boy who invited them to camp in hopes they would get saved. I bet they remember that nonsense to this day.

That's horrible. I had to get quite a few forced haircuts in bible school, too. But I'm getting revenge, now!!

I'm thinking a headcut not just a haircut on this one.

Yeah, you know the old joke about the diet where you lose ten pounds of ugly fat instantly, right? Cut your head off.

...one of the many benefits of being an Admin! By the way, I've been asked to join Admin. Should I? They're looking for a quiet, level-headed, non-opinionated, quiet person and believe I'm a perfect fit.

hey, at least I log on occasionally as opposed to some of you lazy Admins!

Speaking of haircuts, one of my dumber moves was to go to the Dean's office in bible school.....he's the guy who would call me in for a haircut.....wearing a wig with hair to the middle of my back and having my friend introduce me as a new student. I thought it was funny. He didn't.

Would have been fun to have a video of that. I had a lot of energy and was a little hyper in my Bible College days. One time the Dean of men told me he wanted to talk with me. After a few minutes of small talk he asked me if I was on drugs! I guess my energy level made him think I was on speed or something. LOL!! I was super nerd. I had and have never tried pot, hate prescription drugs and barely take them when prescribed and sure don't take any not. I was totally floored. I not only said no but that I would be glad to submit to a drug test if he did not believe me.

When I was around 15 or 16 years old, at Illinois Youth Camp they did a hair check on boys, and about 25-30 of us were put on a church bus and driven into town for haircuts. There were three guys from our church on that bus besides me. Two of them were not saved.

I do not know for sure how the haircuts were paid for, but I think the pastor of the church were the boys came from was billed for the expense!

I went from a "cool" haircut with my hair barely touching the top of my ears and collar, to a crew cut!! All of us boys became the laughing stock of the camp, which I guess is what the leaders were hoping for. I don't know if I've ever been so humiliated in my life!

What younger folks reading these posts have to realize is that in the timeframe you and I are posting about the style of the day was for mens hair to either just touch or go down over the ear. It was generally considered a sin for a UPC boy to have hair touching his ears. We are not talking long haired hippies with hair flowing down their backs! Sounds like your case was like mine where the hair was barely to or over the ear.

I wonder if any of the men who did this, assuming they are still alive, would actually apologies to you and the other boys involved, or would they just laugh it off expecting you to do the same?

Those who hacked on my hair would still stand by their positions. Interesting....it was the Illinois camp of which I spoke and we didn't get the advantage of a "pro" haircut.....some old nut just whacked on my hair himself. My sin? My hair was TOUCHING my ears.

Well, I never went to youth camp either. Don't plan on going any time soon.

Actually, back in 1962 (in the pre Vietnam protest days), while on active duty with the US Army, I was ordered to grow a beard (my first one). Of course, the Navy continued to allow beards until what, the mid 70's (What say the Old Salts, I forget the year)?

NOW, you should have known what the Bible says about hair touching a male's ears.

This is true! To some pastors, it was a sin to have a boys hair even come close to touching his ears! My hair was barely even touching the top of my ears. It was not covering any part of my ears. Wow! I just realized that I'm still harboring bitterness over that incident! hahaha!
