Hillsong Leader Brian Houston Interviewed

Hillsong "investigation"... two parts. You may have seen this - it's a few months old, but it's very interesting.

I gotta say I like Brian Houston. He is transparent even stating his personal income.

I enjoyed it! I particularly found it interesting that Brain said his combined income is about $300, 000. Not because that is a small amount, but in regards to other TV Evangelists it likely is very low. I understand about half of that income is from books he wrote etc.

So I surmise his church income of 150,000 is likely not more than a Pentecostal pastor of a medium sized church...

Do most Pentecostal pastors of medium size churches make that amount?

Pure speculation I admit. But it would not surprise me for a medium sized church of say 600 members.

The point is, it is not a scandalous amount given there are a million people who consider themselves connected to Hillsong.

Pentecostal pastors that recieve all the tithe of a church of 600 members is going to be in the $500K-750K range.

That is a very modest income for the pastor of such a large church, reflects tremedous integrity, in my opinion. Most pastors of that large a church would recieve 10s of millions. Of course, that is not that many churches that size. Many mega "ministries" are into millions and millions, many times consumed by the leader and his or her family, I disagree with these situations very much.

hmmm... not sure how that might be figured, but the leadership in a church of 600 is not singular either.

Great interview. I love Hillsong. Love their music. Their people, that I've interacted with, have all been remarkable Christians.

Not a fan of mega-churches though. They make me nervous. The heartbeat of Gospel community is easy to be missing. The single pastor model with a mega-church, even more-so.

Divide by four equals 150 families, aveage family income of 50k, so aveage tithe of 5K equals $750,000. 500K for senior, 250K for staff. Of course, offerings and special offerings bring the total much higher.

This is very broad generalization, but is not usual, in my opinion.

I would question whether one in four are gainfully employed, given children, elderly retired and unemployed.

I would also seriously doubt more than half of employed constituents actually give "tithe" in any given church.

In leader centric churches I believe in would be much higher, and the 50K aveage family income may be very low, especially in metro areas such as Dallas and Houston.

The church I attend has maybe 450-500 members and the annual budget it 800K, and this church does not pass the plate. You have to intentionally give, in the collection boxes at the entrances. Of course there the occasional teaching about giving, but it is very low key, very respectful.

You make several very good points, and may very well be true in many churches.
