Well, since we are deciding about women preachers maybe we can decide if we can own slaves....

I haven't been involved with the discussions you are referring to but the point you appear to be making here is that certain parts of the Bible are outdated?

I am just saying it helps to know the culture of the day the Bible was written...and especially JEWISH CUSTOMS...I enjoy teaching JEWISH customs and history along with just about any history...if I were not a missionary I would have chosen to be a history teacher....

There are laws in especially the O.T. we would never think of obeying and many things even in the NT we understand to be a culture thing...such as greet one another with a holy kiss...I don´t think it would go over to good for me to start kissing the brothers...ha....

It depends, can they be pretty young females? (20-ish is fine) Can they feed me grapes while I lay back on the couch?

Well, I LOVE TO COOK....and wish I could often stay at home but we have church every night so seldom get to stay at home, ladies meetings and prayers meetings several days a week and visits...lol...because keeping my house clean and meals prepared for the family and dozens that just happen by...

Depends on what is meant by slavery. We are all slaves to some extent. Slavery was a type of job/labor to gain or pay off debt which was honourable. We are slaves to jobs, loans, family, friends. If someone is talking about owning someones rights... Well that is up to the other person and should be a mutual situation of contract. I do not believe however that imposed salvery would be right. Again it depends on what is meant by slavery.

My joking point about the female slaves is actually valid for the thread, as the same culture that is being discussed also allowed polygamy in addition to slavery.

So with the scriptures to justify owning another person also comes scripture to justify me having 5 or 6 wives.

I am thinking that the NT instruction on treatment of slaves was more so aimed at the cultural reality of the time. Slavery was a common, accepted practice.

So common that people didn't much think about it and instruction that slaves are to be treated as brothers was valid.

Paul didn't really address slavery one way or another; only the relationships that occurred because of it.

He was talking to slaves and masters who were believers, and he didn't take a political stand. He addressed the dynamic, and instructed them to be good to one another. I'm not sure that he was supporting slavery. IMO, he was simply addressing the social dynamic as it existed from a Christlike POV.

2 Points.

1. Your comment leaves the notion that you feel that the Bible is tainted or contaminated with male-ness.

2. Despite the differing views of this and a few previous generations God certainly does have a specific order of authority that he works through and, one has to assume, good reasons for doing so. If women writing a few books would have changed anything in His Eternal, Wise & Holy Word that might be why he didn't do it. One would assume that the true test of God's leading would be that nothing would have changed unless the notions put forth in Gods Word were erroneous and needed changing.

somethings are indeed culture but that doesn't mean we can use culture to change things in the bible that are not cultural. You know such as women having authority over over the man etc... :)

This is an apples to pickles analogy in my opinion.

When speaking of these relationships between men & women they are largely based upon marriage, family etc. A woman is to be subject to her own husband etc.

The institution of slavery is no longer in existence in our culture. The scriptures that speak to slavery do not instruct us to own slaves. They instruct people in a society that accepts slavery the way to treat one another.

The institution of marriage and the family still do exist although this could change if the direction we are headed as a society is any indicator.

however slavery is in existence in many countries...many things in the Brazilian culture are very different than in your culture...even in the churches....

We do own "slaves". The concept is servants. Many are servants of companies, corporations, and wealthy families.

I am just saying a lot of things are culture...and that is where we run into many problems today because of different cultures...

I probably am known as an UC whatever people want that to mean...our men do not wear mustaches due to the fact the churches that I grew up in and around do not use them HOWEVER my father in law was from a time and culture where a REAL man wore a mustache and he wore one to the day he died...he was a fine Christian gentleman and a wonderful preacher and a great father in law. HE was from a time and culture that pastors wore suits and ties ALL the time and he lived for many years in my home and never once did I ever see him without a suit and tie...to him he was fully dressed...

The Bible was written at a time when men wore robes and sandals...That would look kinda odd for my husband to appear in a robe next Sunday...I Guess he could say he was trying to dress like JESUS...

We build fences around our houses and churches here and put bars on the windows...I live in a 3rd world country...where I live northeast Brazil they say it compares to INDIA...
IT WOULD BE A SLAP IN THE FACE FOR ME NOT TO GREET ANOTHER CHRISTIAN SAYING the peace of the Lord...and it would be a slap in my face if it was not answered with The peace of LORD...

As times change so do culture...some things for the good other things for the bad...not all tradition is bad...
When I FIRST came to Brazil THE ASSEMBLY OF GOD CHURCH CLOSE TO OUR HOME WOULD NOT LET THEIR MEMBERS HAVE BIRDS IN CAGES OR GIRLS RIDE BICYCLES... MEN SAT ON ONE SIDE OF THE CHURCH AND WOMEN ON THE OTHER SIDE...AND MANY OF OUR CHURCHES still follow that custom...some are more modern..ha...
