Just a curiosity question....

I visited my friend this weekend and attended the UPC church that her husband pastors. I have to admit, first of all, that I am very surprised (and frankly, pleased) by the way that things have changed in regards to "standards". There is hope yet. LOL

But one observation that I made that honestly did surprise me alot was that hardly any of the women had on nylons. It was bare legs all the way. My friend's mother (who lives in another state) commented to me that hardly any women are wearing pantyhose or any other kinds of nylons anymore. That, in fact, it is getting hard to find stores that sell them!

Is that true in all of your areas as well? Are your women going bare-legged??? I don't see anything wrong with it. I'm just curious :thumbsup

But now that you've brought the subject up I guess I will have to check! :foottap

Out of curiosity I ask what standards have changed?

I think, in general, the younger women are opting for bare legs year round. At least in my area they are.

Almost all of the one's our churches used to hold! Very few UPC churches hold to the standards that used to be preached. That's why many of us have become distanced a bit from the mainstream movement.

I was looking for specifics. Are you familiar with the specifics? I'm really not interested in any uninformed commentary.

well, let's see....

even pastors have TV's in their homes now.

many of the ladies, including pastor's wives, are now trimming their hair. Some to shoulder length or shorter. And I was amazed this morning at how many "hair pieces" I saw attached. There used to be a day when that would have been tabboo. I see nothing wrong with it. But it still wouldn't have been allowed 30 years ago.

Many of the ladies are wearing make-up of one sort or another.

I heard a UPC pastor speak in a sermon recently about going to pray with a group of young people from his church before they left to go prom. He said that if he prayed with them before they left, maybe they would "see his face in front of them" all night long and hopefully that would give them some strength to avoid temptation. Personally, I thought that was a GREAT idea!!

Many of the UPC churches that I am acquainted with and know people in are now allowing their saints to go to movie theaters.

I know a whole lot of Apostolic women (yes, UPC) who are now wearing pants and some even shorts, except for during church or on the platform.

Enough??

All that margie listed before me is true.

One biggie is sports. I can say that in the area i am in...i do not know of one UPC church that still preaches against sports or television. Many pastors have televisions in their home (not all by any means). The majority in our district still hold to uncut hair on women and short hair on men (there are a few who don't) . As well as distinction of dress. Most still frown on make up and hair dye. Wedding rings are allowed in almost all UPC churches now...hasn't always been that way. Indeed, the UPCI has seen quite a bit of comprimise in the last few years, but i also have seen some men of God that are being stirred and are once again calling for the Old Paths (in and out of the UPC). God will always have a remnant that preaches the way of holiness and i am convinced that he doesnt care much about an organizational title. He's more concerned with the content of the pulpit.

No hose in this area either, except in church. As far as I know, some OP churches here still teach they must be worn to church.

I saw a woman in the store the other night. She still had on a skirt, but otherwise there were so many changes in her clothing that once she stopped me and visited for a minute I asked where she went to church now. Things have changed a whole lot in five years, even there.

WV. My pastor is UPCI but in the last few years we have not been to many of the UPC meetings. We go to several WPF functions. Our church is and always has been independant Apostolic.

Women wearing skirts and are bare legged....

Hmmmm....

I don't think it's a major issue. However, it does present the notion that women wearing ladies jeans or pants suits have more covered than ladies who wear dresses or skirts.

Most of the women in our church don't wear nylons. It depends on what style of outfit you are wearing. IMO, some outfits look terrible without them.

I can understand wearing sandals w/o hose but, I don't see how women like wearing dress shoes w/o them.

I like to wear hose most time...but it has never been a doctrine at our church of course we are not UPCI so I really don't know how they feel about hose. Most of our people wear sandals as it is very hot here.
We did have a preacher that was ACI (ex UPC) preach for us years ago and he mentioned in his sermon about ladies wearing hose but I stopped and told him I would NOT translate that to our people...he did not like it...but I have to live here...and he would leave in a week...
Later found out he was having an affair...lol...no wonder he was looking at ladies legs...

I guess I am an odd person and even though some may consider me UC...I cringe when men get up and all they have to preach about is ladies and how they dress...
and yes I do believe both men and women should be modest but I personally do not feel that is a visiting minister's business how our church dresses...that is our job as the pastor to preach and teach our people...not every Tom, Dick and Harry that comes to visit the mission field.

If I go somewhere I go to bless not beat ... I have had to talk to people concerning different things however they were my people not sheep that someone else pastored.

You can go to heaven barefooted...but you cannot go to heaven with the wrong spirit...

Well....don't pay any attention...I am just rambling...

Yes, I think that's true. Most of the younger women/girls I know don't like to wear pantyhose, and I know my daughters will only wear them if I tell them they have to.

I still see them for sale everywhere, though. Target, Kohl's, Dillard's, Macy's and Steinmart all have large selections, and even my local grocery store carries a few "Legg's" brand. :thumbsup

Bare legged even on the platform in our church. Not all women, but most.

As for Standards: I do not see what is wrong with shorts, capri's, bracelet's, rings, necklaces, ect....And that is one of the reason's I am not on the platform any longer.

I love the church that I go to. Pastor is PHENOMIAL! But it is more of a conservative church although we do have two TV programs running

So what did those "Conservative" churches do in 1942-47 when you could not buy a pair of Nylons do to The War?

Worldly women were painting lines up the back of their legs.

I can understand requiring them on the platform, but if the dress/skirt is to the ankles, who cares.

We have Dupont carpetting in our church. When women run the isle, they can round the corners faster with bare feet. More traction.

Worldly women? :blink Church women, too, according to my mother, because otherwise it appeared that you weren't wearing hosiery, which was unacceptable.

some thoughts on women wearing hose,

I think it is a carryover from when women wore cotton stockings.

One OP preacher in our town preached that women were to wear stockings and if they couldn't afford nylon they should buy cotton stockings.

Most are still wearing nylons, but many are wearing black fully designed styles. Personally most seem to clash with what they are wearing. I think a sold black outfit would work with a design hosiery, but that would be it. JMO

However, there are still a number of younger girls that do not wear nylons.

I have worn them almost all my life. I found out in my 20's that a good support hose can help eliminate varicose veins. Since that runs in my family really strong, I wore then even in the summer. And I have not had the dreaded varicose veins.

I think they give a polished look. I don't care for being dressed up and then being bare legged. JMO

Our church requires hoes for the platform ministry (praise team, musicians, choir). Women also must have their hair up if on the platform. Of course we have platform guidelines for the guys as well. Guys must have a suit jacket on.....etc etc....
