Gateway College is now accredited...
 

As of yesterday, the vote was passed at GC11. Gateway College of Evangelism has been aquired by the UPCI and will cease to exist after this school year is up. The new school will open in fall 2011. Also, the name will change. It will be ??? University. This school will be the first ever UPCI University, and the first out of all the UPCI bible college's to obtain accreditation. Get ready to see enrollment sky rocket.

Fall of 2011?

Long overdue. All of the Bible schools are struggling to get students and why not? They have been promising accreditation for years, even have received offerings to try to accomplish such but to no avail. I was told that all of the Bible school presidents were approached about consolidating for the purpose of establishing an accredited college. It was resisted. So this must be the move in spite of the Bible schools. This will put the Bible schools out of business or they will get on the ball and finally attain accreditation. I would venture to say ABI, IBC, TBC and CLC will not be able to remain viable. UPC young people will be drawn to St. Louis in order to get a real degree and have something to show for it after four years of investment.

Nothing on the link provided in this thread shows that this "new" college exists right now.

Nothing on the link provided states that Gateway or the "new" college is now accredited.

UGST is taking over/or rather purchasing Gateway. There are already accredited. ...and yes, this coming school year (fall of 2011) will be officially accredited.

:thumbsup But I don't think accredidation quite works that way either. There are many different universities that share a common name but that doesn't mean they share accredidations. Maybe I'm still fuzzy as to what is actually going on?

I believe you are correct. My understanding is that UGST was accredited by somebody for the Masters / Doctorate portion of a degree but I don't think that would automatically make the undergraduate part it will gain by absorbing Gateway accredited.

I hope they will be able to get accredited as a Liberal Arts University and be able to offer accredited degrees. I had hoped Great Lakes University would pull this off but I understand things are not going well there and I don't know if it is even operating anymore.

Can't remember who the accreditation is being done through, but this process at Gateway has been going on for much longer than a year. We have been getting updates on their progress at every MO District Conference for at least the last three years.

Here are some quotes from a facebook thread from an instructor/professor at Gateway. This sheds more light from a reliable source.

"I just heard that a motion passed at Gen Conf for UGST to buy out Gateway's charter and facilities. As I understand it, at some point in the near future (summer 2012) Gateway will cease to exist and the UPCI will open an undergrad institution."

No, you guys aren't getting it! Gateway will be an accredited institution starting fall 2012. The vote was passed at GC, meaning the UPCI now has full control over Gateway, meaning UGST is going to purchase Gateway this summer. Gateway will close it's doors, and shut down this summer...then UGST will purchase the facility and open a new school.

You are right to an extent...Gateway will never be accredited. Gateway is closing after this year. It's going to be a totally new school.

The site I provided was released about 6 months ago with plans to vote on it at General Conference 2011. They voted, it passed!

UGST is only a graduate school isn't it? Being a graduate school doesn't mean they have any undergraduate accredidations. Therefore, them purchasing a university and opening it under a new name (even their name if they could) does not mean the new university has any of its 4 year degree programs accredidated.

:( The link you gave us was about a new Christian college. It doesn't matter that the UPCI voted on anything. The UPCI doesn't accredit anyone. So if thats the only reason you think the new college will be accreditated then I will stick with the faq website that says:

You are wrong. It will be several years before the new 4 year undergraduate school will be accredited. I know, because I heard the school's president, Darrell Jons, say so yesterday. I was less than 2 feet from him when he said it.

It matters if you've invested in a 529 college plan and want to use the money toward it...

For 529 plan purposes, an eligible educational institution is any college, university, vocational school or other postsecondary educational institution eligible to participate in a student aid program administered by the U.S. Department of Education. By that definition, nearly all accredited public, non-profit and proprietary (privately owned, profit-making) postsecondary institutions are eligible.

No. He serves at both locations...flying back and forth between the two. When I was a student there, he was at Gateway once or twice a month.
