NEW YORK: Could "Occupy Wall Street" be the Tea Party of the left? President Barack Obama has dared compare them but both groups see red at the suggestion and analysts also cite big differences between the two.

But there are parallels in what brought them into being, namely the "economic stagnation" engulfing the United States, said Julian Zelizer, professor of History and Public Affairs at Princeton University.

Since it started in early 2009, the Tea Party, an eclectic mix of conservative groups, has rapidly imposed itself on the political landscape, espousing a determination to cut government spending.

Occupy Wall Street, meanwhile, has used the Internet to spread its message, building on a series of popular demonstrations that have struck a chord with millions of Americans rocked by the fallout of the 2008-2009 economic crisis.

On Tuesday, Obama said he understood "the frustrations being expressed in those protests," on Wall Street, noting that "in some ways, they're not that different from some of the protests that we saw coming from the Tea Party."

Robert Shapiro, a political scientist at Columbia University, however, said what both movements had in common was anger at the predicament in which the United States currently finds itself.

"They seem to be venting the same kind of frustration but the two groups are very different ideologically," Shapiro said, noting that the Tea Party wanted smaller government, less regulation and cuts to social welfare programs.

Occupy Wall Street, however, has blamed Washington for bailing out Wall Street with billions of dollars while simultaneously cutting public spending, arguing that 99 percent of Americans are losing out to the richest 1 percent.

Such intervention is loathed by the Tea Party, who want less "intrusiveness of government in the economic sphere," according to Shapiro. The Tea Party has also circulated a document among members criticizing the Wall Street protests.

In another contrast, Occupy Wall Street has no leader or clear demands, whereas the Tea Party has the allegiance of well-known politicians such as former Alaska governor and defeated vice-president nominee Sarah Palin.

"We do not have one or two simple demands," Occupy Wall Street said on a "Frequently Asked Questions" flyer, and the "goal is to create an independent voice," according to Mark Bray, one of its spokesmen.

"That voice may cause politicians to head toward the kinds of changes we desire, but given our past experience with Obama and Bush etc. we can no longer assume that they will be sufficiently responsive to our needs," he told AFP.

No analyst ventured to predict what impact Occupy Wall Street, which led to a similar group, "Occupy DC", camping out in the US capital, and numerous similar protests in American cities, will have on the 2012 presidential vote.

The success of Occupy Wall Street and the media attention it has attracted since setting up a makeshift headquarters in a Manhattan park on September 17 has been more or less condemned by the Tea Party.

"Tea Party rallies have always been safe and clean," it said in a jibe at its rival which laid bare the lack of solidarity between the two groups.

"Unlike in New York, we can find no reports of tea partiers being arrested, individually or en masse, at the thousands of tea parties across the country with millions of attendees that have taken place for years now.

"They are not lawbreakers, they don't hate the police, they don't even litter. A quick glance at the TV reveals the sharp contrast posed by the Wall Street occupiers."

A very big difference. The Tea Party like so many demonstrating groups did their job then they WENT HOME. This group has no plans to leave. Their plan is to OCCUPY WALL STREET. They are not leaving. How long before the place goes up in flames?

I believe there were about 20 arrests here in Dallas. That's after they were ordered to relocate from City Hall plaza to some park not far away. As they (the protesters) put it, they were being driven to another location with less exposure as a means of violating their first amendment rights...

I hope riots and/or fires don't result. But, I wouldn't put it past them to something like that...

I don't blame people for rising up in protest.

Wall street climbed to prosperity on our backs and then shipped our jobs overseas, leaving us to suffer and scramble to try to stay employed

the economies of the world are emploding, we are just now feeling the suffering of others.

What we need to remember is, too, that we have a "president" in office who is preaching "Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!" yet wants to go after the wealthy and big corporations by taxing them more...which would result in less money for them to hire workers.

It's a sick, vicious circle of him (Obama) chasing his tail. He doesn't know his rear from a hole in the ground...

I saw the arrests on Channel 8 news.

The occupy people were sitting in front of the entance to a citibank. They would not allow customers to enter or those inside to exit.


They were told by police to move. they did not.
They also were wearing bandanas over their faces soaked in water to help with the teargas they expected and they all had a lawyers number written in sharpie on their arms.

They WANTED to get arrested. They planned it. It was on purpose.

Wall Street just moves shares of stock around. If you have a 401K someone on wallstreet is working for you.

Companies have moved jobs over seas NOT wall street.

They have done it for a large number of reasons. A large part of the reason these jobs get moved is because government required regulations put cost structures in place that make it impossible to compete globally.

part of the issue is that it just costs less to build a product in other countries. and part of the reason is the workforce here will not do the work required at the rate that can be paid.

Wall Street didnt do that.


What Wall Street did do... and by Wall Street I am talking about the investment banks, is they did do some funny things with loans.

To start with banks lent money to people who could not afford the loan, then they sold the loans in bundles to the big investment banks. then the loans went belly up.


the thing that caused this was two fold. first,congress changed the community reinvestmnet act (CRA) to force banks to create home loans in low income neighborhoods. Guess what? Those folks couldnt pay them back.

Second, congress got rid of banking regulation that had been in place for decades. those regulations required all banks keep certain amounts on cash on hand and that the investment banks could not act as regular banks.

Then the new regulations allowed for the creation of dirivitives that create a kind of insurance to back the loans.

The new regulation failed. the old regulation was good. and on top of that the CRA CAUSED the mess to start.


It was our wonderful FEDERAL Goverment that caused this mess. it was all done in the late 1990s.


this anger with Wall Street while in some areas is warrented (they found a way to make a lot of money on the backs of poor people becuase of the regulations in place) but the CAUSE of the mess was our government.

Months ago I watched the origins of this on Glenn Beck. He was showing a video of a guy named Learner. Some high up Union guy was doing a teaching session where he had the OWS thing planned out. The goal was to collapse Capitolism. Im not kidding. We knew this was coming months ago. People were mocking Beck to scorn. Yet here we are just like he warned.

Beck has been right on more things than most care to admit. He is a little overboard on the "sky is falling" rhetoric, but he has been right about a lot of things the past few years.

I didnt see the Beck thing. sometimes I think he is a tiny bit overboard.

However, if you have heard anything from these Occupy people, it is front and center and very clear that their goal is to collapse capitalism.
