Those Crazy Baptists
I ran into a girl at the grocery store passing out tracts. She had long long hair, no makeup or jewelry and she wore a dress. I commented about it and she said something about not advertizing their standards...anyways this is what they believe
We believe that the King James Bible is the Holy preserved, and perfect Word of God. We believe that God is the Creator of the Universe. (Genesis 1; John 1:1-3) We believe in the Deity or Jesus Christ, and the God exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (1 John 5:7) We believe that all men are sinners and by nature corrupt. (Romans 3:23) We believe that God sent His Son to die a sacrificial death to pay for our sin. (Romans 6:23; John 3:16; Romans 5:8) We believe that Redemption from sin and forgiveness for sin are available through belief in Jesus Christ. (1 John 1:9; John 1:12) We believe that salvation is by grace through faith alone. (Ephesians 2:8-9; Acts 16:31; Titus 3:5) We believe that through belief in Jesus Christ we are saved from death, Hell and the grave, and we are given a new nature (Romans 5:9; 2 Corinthians 5:17) We believe that the real answer for today’s troubles can be found through studying the Bible, trusting in God’s goodness, and obeying His New Testament commandments.(2 Timothy 2:15; Proverbs 3:5-6; Psalm 119:9) The Baptists are the only sect of Christian Churches that have never been affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. We are not, and never have been Protestants. There have always been Baptist Churches. We were founded by Christ, planted by the apostles, and preserved by the grace of God. We have had many names throughout the centuries. We were called Waldenses, Lollards, Paulicans and Separatists. Finally the Catholic Church settled on calling us Anabaptists, which was later shortened to Baptist. http://www.wellsroadbaptist.org/Site/Home.html |

Re: Those Crazy Baptists
We have those Baptists around here. They are called either Holy Baptists or Bible Baptists. They dress like Pentecostals, are very active in door to door evangelism (basically told me I was going to hell at my door!), and they pass out tracts in all the shopping center lots. They are not well liked in our area.

Re: Those Crazy Baptists
What is so unusual about Baptists that witness? I remember witnessing on the streets of Dayton Ohio years ago when The Charity Baptist group appeared on the scene. They passed out tracts and yelled insults at us calling us "water dogs" and "tonguers". The Pastor used a cane and he waved it around threateningly at me.
Most groups that witness are Baptists. A close friend of ours started out Baptist. She said her Church preached wearing dresses. Some of them are very zealous for what they believe. A yound lady I Pastored back in the 80's met someone from a Baptist group. She invited him to our Church and he came with his Pastor and several others who challenged me to debate their doctrine. We spent a Church night "disputing and persuading" as the Apostle Paul did. So zealous Baptists , that is for Baptist doctrine are not that unusual. After all they are the majority Evangelical Protestant faith. Most times they are zealous to get you to pray a sinners prayer, confess Jesus, believe in the Trinity and once in grace always in grace. When it comes to being zealous for New Testament commandments perhaps the group Prax met is different than most. Baptist is far and away the majority faith in my area of Kentucky. Almost everyone I meet here is Baptist. |
Re: Those Crazy Baptists
What to me would be really unusual would be to see Apostolics witnessing! I can only remember one Apostolic group right off hand that did street witnessing. The night I ran into them outside a bar where we were witnessing is the night I was convinced I needed to be baptized in Jesus name.

I've met some Wesleyans that would put UC's to shame.

Re: Those Crazy Baptists
I work with a Weslyan Methodist lady. VERY strong standards. Great people that really love God. Went to some of their revivals. Their genuine love for God and desire to please Him is evident. What they lack is the Joy that comes with the Holy Ghost. Precious people, I pray for them often.

Re: Those Crazy Baptists
Good grief...how can you guys read what I said and focused in on witnessing?
They were standard keepers who think the KJV is the ONLY correct translation, that THEY are the only true church going back to Paul and their implication is (otherwise why make it an issue?) is that you have to be one of the to be saved. My question now is, what if someone says "See? This is the reason why I left the baptist. They are a cult and abusive towards women"? |
Re: Those Crazy Baptists
My husband and I belong to the general assembly church of the firstborn. (Hebrews 12:23)

Re: Those Crazy Baptists
I live where the Bible Missionary Church has their Bible College and Headquarters. Most of their people that I have seen would put many 'conservative' Pentecostals to shame. I have been to a couple of their revivals, some of their church services, and one campmeeting. Outside of the fact that they do not have the deep moving of the Spirit that I have seen in Pentecost, you would think that you were in a group of Pentecostal people. However, they are rather distrustful of Pentecost because of the falling standards that they have seen in recent years. My friends that I hang out with are from this group. The wedding that I posted about on my blog was one of my friends from that church.

Re: Those Crazy Baptists
This is all kinda funny but I was with some MAJOR BAPTIST people today and they are not at all like the ones described on this thread. ! I was at In Touch Ministries here on I-85 in Atlanta. Dr Charles Stanley is the Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Atlanta which averages around 5,000 per Sunday but his main ministry is In Touch Ministries. He has a very palatial and modern $75 million debt free complex that is second to none. There was more Television equipment and cameras in one of those buildings than I have ever seen at any televising station. It was amazing and yes - he is a Southern Baptist - but saved as a young boy in a PENTECOSTAL HOLINESS CHURCH!

I would guess that the Baptist and Holiness people that we are talking about do not have many churches that are over a 200. They are not very large, and are not linked to any of the major Baptist denominations. They sound like they are splits from long ago who disagreed with the movement of their denomination. |
