Are You Having Church Sunday?

We're not having church this coming Sunday (Christmas day... ya know)

He's the reason for the season huh? :)

No church at our UPC church home or at the 'big' church in the next town.... or anywhere else close that I know of. Some of the local trinnies are having Christmas eve services.... we are going to the beach!

LOL... There aren't any beaches in East Texas. Y'all headed to Galveston?

We will be building a few Cajon's to sell.

Yes, we like Moody Gardens this time of year. It's only 2 hours away so we can do it as a day trip and be home to milk :)

We are.

And we do celebrate "pagan" holidays. With gusto. :)

There was a thread here a few days ago about this, and the majority of posters are having church.

So... the church that doesn't tout that Jesus is the reason for the season is the one having church... even having an evangelist in.

Oh the irony.

We used to live in the Tomball/Magnolia area (NW Houston) and Galveston/Moody Gardens were a popular trip to make.

Now that I'm 9 hours away... not so much. :)

We're not having service, but I would be okay with it if we were. Personally, I'm thankful to have a quiet day with my family and not attending a formal service doesn't in ANY way mean that God will be left out of our home or our day. :) I saw a post by a pastor on facebook about this very thing that I felt was a somewhat judgmental. *They* are having church and invited anyone who isn't to attend at their place. In addition, they posted a rather pointed message regarding those who aren't having service.

Local pastors know their congregation and their families better than anyone else. There is nothing wrong with giving them the day off to travel and spend time with family. In some churches, nearly everyone leaves town for the holidays because their families don't live close.

It's odd to me that some people want to use this as a way to feel spiritually superior.

MissBrattified, it's probably good that some have church on Christmas day. That gives them time to look down their noses and be judgmental about those who did not have service. We're having one service, simply a time to remember our loved ones who have gone on before, and a time to honor Christ, the founder of Christmas. (That should be a good door-opener for some of the critics.) Forgive me for being critical myself. To everybody on AFF, I hope you have a Very Merry Christmas, to those who believe in it and to those who do not!

We'll definitely be spending our entire service looking down our noses at the rest of the world... Oh wait, actually, those of us without family will be spending an hourish together on Christmas, as family, because that's what family does.

I admit I don't understand why any church would cancel services on Christmas. As someone without family, I would very much miss the opportunity to attend on a major holiday. It's not like having service means anyone actually needs to attend.

I think it's great that you guys are having service. :santathumb

Personally, I don't think most people are deliberately judgmental; they just don't think their comments through very well. There are a lot of practical reasons to take a holiday off, and as far as I know all of my friends will be including Christ in their Christmas even though they aren't at church. Taking a day off from formal services isn't taking the day off from God.

I hope everyone has a GREAT Christmas tomorrow, whether they attend service or not! :horn

Actually, I was surprised at the post because it doesn't seem to fit his personality. I didn't post any specifics HERE because I only wanted to include the comments in the discussion; not malign a person in particular. I've heard similar comments before from other people over the years, usually from ultra-cons, but more recently from two liberal pastors. (Not including the comments I mentioned on this thread.)

I don't think the comments were well thought out because they send a message of condemnation rather than one intended to uplift.

Our church is having service. But I totally understand why churches would cancel. Christmas is primarily a family holiday. Many extended families gather for a meal at noon on Christmas. That involves a ton of cooking and preparation. Christmas morning is a special time for families. Kids opening presents, food, fun. It does not in ANY WAY take away from Jesus when you spend a day with your family, sharing celebration and love. It is not necessary to go sit in a formal service to "celebrate Jesus birth". We celebrated Jesus right in my parents' living room yesterday.

Ah...I don't mind anyone skipping out for family! But, I do not have family. My church family is my family, and to be given the opportunity to spend time with them is precious to me. I know full well there likely won't be many people there, but those of us with nowhere else to go will be able to spend some time together because service wasn't canceled.

I'm not saying even the pastor has to be there, but surely there's someone on the leadership team who doesn't have family, or doesn't have plans that would conflict with a shortened service/gathering, just to open the doors.

God bless you dear sweet brother, this time of year my heart is so heavy for remembering Christmases past with my Mother, Father, and Son, who have all now gone on to be with the Lord.

My sister is affected also and has been crying off and on for the last two weeks.

Thank God for Church family, and their comfort and prayers and hugs.

That's one reason why our church decided to have service.

Couldn't those without families get together at someone's home? That's what I would try to do if I didn't have family to get together with. Reading the Christmas story beside the twinkling tree with a cup of coffee in hand is a very special experience, and would be awesome shared with other brothers and sisters. :)
