Are You Having Church Sunday?
We're not having church this coming Sunday (Christmas day... ya know)
He's the reason for the season huh? :) |
Re: Are You Having Church Sunday?
No church at our UPC church home or at the 'big' church in the next town.... or anywhere else close that I know of. Some of the local trinnies are having Christmas eve services.... we are going to the beach!

Church Sunday, we have an evangelist with us.
Course, we don't observe pagan holidays. |

We are.
And we do celebrate "pagan" holidays. With gusto. :) There was a thread here a few days ago about this, and the majority of posters are having church. |

Re: Are You Having Church Sunday?
We're not having service, but I would be okay with it if we were. Personally, I'm thankful to have a quiet day with my family and not attending a formal service doesn't in ANY way mean that God will be left out of our home or our day. :) I saw a post by a pastor on facebook about this very thing that I felt was a somewhat judgmental. *They* are having church and invited anyone who isn't to attend at their place. In addition, they posted a rather pointed message regarding those who aren't having service.
Local pastors know their congregation and their families better than anyone else. There is nothing wrong with giving them the day off to travel and spend time with family. In some churches, nearly everyone leaves town for the holidays because their families don't live close. It's odd to me that some people want to use this as a way to feel spiritually superior. |

MissBrattified, it's probably good that some have church on Christmas day. That gives them time to look down their noses and be judgmental about those who did not have service. We're having one service, simply a time to remember our loved ones who have gone on before, and a time to honor Christ, the founder of Christmas. (That should be a good door-opener for some of the critics.) Forgive me for being critical myself. To everybody on AFF, I hope you have a Very Merry Christmas, to those who believe in it and to those who do not! Been Thinkin |

I admit I don't understand why any church would cancel services on Christmas. As someone without family, I would very much miss the opportunity to attend on a major holiday. It's not like having service means anyone actually needs to attend. Quote:

Personally, I don't think most people are deliberately judgmental; they just don't think their comments through very well. There are a lot of practical reasons to take a holiday off, and as far as I know all of my friends will be including Christ in their Christmas even though they aren't at church. Taking a day off from formal services isn't taking the day off from God. I hope everyone has a GREAT Christmas tomorrow, whether they attend service or not! :horn |

I don't think the comments were well thought out because they send a message of condemnation rather than one intended to uplift. |
Re: Are You Having Church Sunday?
Can't wait for church service tomorrow!

Re: Are You Having Church Sunday?
Service Sun AM as usual.

Re: Are You Having Church Sunday?
My family will be in attendance at the church my Uncle pastors for service. Their service will begin at 1100, and after that our family is having a 'mexican' Christmas dinner. I can hardly wait.:D:D:D

Our church is having service. But I totally understand why churches would cancel. Christmas is primarily a family holiday. Many extended families gather for a meal at noon on Christmas. That involves a ton of cooking and preparation. Christmas morning is a special time for families. Kids opening presents, food, fun. It does not in ANY WAY take away from Jesus when you spend a day with your family, sharing celebration and love. It is not necessary to go sit in a formal service to "celebrate Jesus birth". We celebrated Jesus right in my parents' living room yesterday. |
Re: Are You Having Church Sunday?
I'm going to watch service via
http://www.fpcpalmbay.com/new/LiveWebcast.html before we head to the movies to see War Horse http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1810159454/trailer yep War Horse, as if this time of year isn't emotional enough already . . . |

I'm not saying even the pastor has to be there, but surely there's someone on the leadership team who doesn't have family, or doesn't have plans that would conflict with a shortened service/gathering, just to open the doors. |

Re: Are You Having Church Sunday?

Couldn't those without families get together at someone's home? That's what I would try to do if I didn't have family to get together with. Reading the Christmas story beside the twinkling tree with a cup of coffee in hand is a very special experience, and would be awesome shared with other brothers and sisters. :) |

Re: Are You Having Church Sunday?
I was in church a few months back, and I was hurting, praying, talking to God . . . a woman stepped into the pew next to me and said. These are not my arms around you, they are Jesus' arms holding you and I felt that it was so.
