Seven is actually an upgrade of Vista, so it is much better. Vista had a few problems, they changed the name to 7.

It's similar enough to Vista that you can jump right on. It is much more compatible with different hardware and overall more stable. It is also much more secure.

windows 7...Vista is a resource hog. It takes way too much to run Vista properly. Of course it does depend on factors, whether or not you have a decent system, and your own personal preference.

Thanks for the info!

One innovative thing I really liked in vista since xp was that it allowed a search on any given window showing directories. Nice.

I have XP, but my computer is down. I have been sharing my sister's computer which has Vista. She is saving up for a laptop and I suggested she get 7 instead of Vista. My husband says since I am sharing her computer I should buy her a laptop and use hers. I said, I don't think so. I will just get mine fixed and upgraded to 7 and maybe an extra hard drive, so I can go vroom, vroom. :)

For speed, you want to consider the processor, and the RAM (memory). And depending on what you do with your computer, the video card. I recommend a 2 GHZ Processor, and 2 GB RAM for Windows 7. That's just a good running computer that you won't have any problems loading stuff with. You can see what you're running by right clicking "Computer" and going down to properties.

In my professional opinion, I recommend at least a 2 GHz dual core CPU and 4 GB of RAM using Windows 7 64Bit.

2 GB of RAM is only 15-30 Dollars. Well worth it right now.

I liked XP and 7 but I never did like Vista, I do not know why exactly as I never had that many opportunities to use it. However it never did sit right with me.

Because it was the "Windows ME" of WinOS. Bugs, Blue Screens, Drivers, etc.

Win7 is will worth the $100.

anything is prefferable to Vista. Vista was flawed from day one. It should have been recalled and replaced free of charge on all of the computers that were sold new with such a horendous operating system. But then....I believe Vista is the 'death-rattle' of the entire 'windows' operating system. If Microsoft does not advance with modern technology, they will be left behind in history along with the 8-track tape. The smart-phone in your pocket has a superior operating system to ANY windows based platform. And on another note.....what virus-scan are you required to have for your phone or your I-pad? Hmmmmm

My TI calculator doesn't require virus scans either, does that mean it is superior? The ipad simply cannot handle multiple things going on at once, other then music in the background, which precluded most viruses from working or having an active hook into anything.

As far as memory requirements, 4 gigs is truly the sweet spot for Win7 64-bit. I have 8 myself (soon to be 16) but I use one of the few applications which actually uses it, Photoshop.

Re: Windows 7 or Vista

Absolutely 7 over VISTA. As someone else mentioned Vista was glitchy.

Crackerjack said they changed the name from Vista to 7 but it was not just a name change. It is a new operating system.

Also keep in mind that Microsoft will only support old operating systems for a limited number of years and VISTA is now several years out of date.

Because things change so fast I do not recommend buying used computers unless they are just an absolute bargain. New desktops and laptops can be found for under $300 now and really good ones for under $600.

Yes, 7 in a new operating system, but it was essentially a remake of Vista. Vista had so many problems that they had to get rid of the name. At least, that is what a very knowledgeable IT tech told me. I bought a new computer just before 7 was released, it came with Vista and a free upgrade to 7. I believe the upgrade keep much of the Vista system.

Anyway, that's my understanding, but I could be wrong.

I spend about 300 just on a video card. But then again, I build a top of the line computer in 2000 and it lasted until 2009. If you only spend 300 it will only last you about 3 years. Just keep that in mind.

Is it best to buy from a retail store or direct from a company, like Dell? I prefer Dell computers.

By buying an upgrade disk, but you can pray that nothing goes wrong. (Never came across an upgrade problem before.)

Well, there ARE some who feel that only God is allowed to do, or not do, certain things.

Maybe if it is HIS will, the computer will boot up tomorrow morning with a mint copy of Windows 7 on it with no human intervention required.

Sure, God COULD do that...........

Google "Windows 7 Upgrade advisor" and download it from the Microsoft web site. It'll look at your system and tell you if it'll run Win 7 and also problems you may have with drivers and such.

Re: Windows 7 or Vista

Cindy, upgrading to Windows 7 is going to cost over $100. I think you would be better off saving for a new $279 - $299 computer with 7 already on it.

The average hard drive only lasts about 5 years so you are just asking for trouble to invest any $$ in keeping that old of a computer running.
