When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
On this Friday, before I go into a weekend Revival, and many of us go into a weekend of chores, errands, and of course church... I hoped to start an encouraging thread that would possibly bring some smiles and some fond memories.
Another post made me look back to 25 years ago, when I as a young Independent Baptist boy walked into a Church of God and received the Holy Ghost. I had never even heard of such teaching, but that night while the preacher was preaching in this 11 week Revival, a sweet little Holiness woman stood up and gave a message in tongues. During the interpretation, I felt the need to run to the altar. Somehow, I knew in my spirit, that what she had wasn't optional, or an add on, but was something I needed to be able to live for God. I was lacking. The Holy Ghost was leading me into that Truth, not one person. By the time the interpretation was over, I was making my way, along with 8 of my school friends to the altar. Evangelist Perry Stone, as well as his dad got ready to lay hands on me. Brother Stone said to me, "When we lay our hands on you, I want you to believe like you never have before." It didn't take pleading, begging it just came. 1 hour later, I came to underneath the first pew. There was a black lady kneeling over me praying... and she said, "Young man, do you know what you've been saying?" I told her no. She said,"I'm a professor at Lee College, I teach Hebrew. For the past hour, you've been recitingthe Lord's Prayer and the 23rd Psalm over and over again in Hebrew..." I've failed the Lord so many times... never been worthy of Him, but today as I have been sort of taking inventory... tears begin to roll down my face as I think about that night... So... could you share about when you received the Holy Ghost? Please, if you don't believe in the baptism of the Holy Ghost, etc, then please don't make this a thread to argue that... okay? Please? But those of you that do believe in this teaching, could you share your testimony of when you got the Holy Ghost? I look forward to hearing your testimonies. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. - Revelation 12:11 |
Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
1/24/2000, during a revival with Lloyd Bustard in Mesquite, Texas. We never spoke afterward, but he left me with a lasting, real-life impression on where I was and where I am now.
I won't go into details, but the phrase "hell or high water" has had it's fair share of use over the past 12 years. I look back now and see how I could have reacted a little differently to certain situations, but nevertheless I wouldn't say I've had any regrets. Only lessons learned...and I'm still learning. I haven't arrived yet... |
Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
I received the Holy Ghost when I was 6 years old. My Dad baptized me in Bro. McGruder's church in Kennett, MO, and when I came up out of the water, I raised my hands and starting speaking in tongues. Precious experience. It stemmed from chapel services at the school that routinely had kindergarteners (on up) in the altar repenting and praying and receiving the Holy Ghost.
I had some self-doubt later in life because I was so young when I received the Holy Ghost, that I "re-sought" Him--and I wasn't disappointed. It's important to transition into an independent relationship if you've been raised in church. Let go of your parents' coattails, so to speak. |
Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
I was 5 years old and was at the Church of God of Prophecy State Convention in Eupora, Mississippi. Brother Leslie Porter was preaching on HELL and I did NOT want to go there! I ran to the altar in the old pole building with no walls - only concrete floor, poles and a tin roof and gave my heart to Jesus and was filled with the Holy Ghost and began a lifetime of speaking in tongues, visions, dreams, prophecies and the Supernatural Gifts of the Holy Ghost in my life. I was preaching on the streets of Vicksburg, MS and anointing the little Catholic kids coming from the Catholic school with oil and praying over them when I was just a child. My Great Grandmother Mandy Dedmon & her 7 daughters were filled with the Holy Ghost in the early 1900's under Bishop AJ Tomlinson, the founder of the Church of God and the Church of God of Prophecy. I have a rich spiritual heritage and am thankful that I was raised in church!

Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
it was 1988 and i was jogging the perimeter road of bergstrom air force base in austin texas. it was dark and isolated. i was listening to a spanish worship song that said, "the devil is defeated". all of a sudden tongues like a fountain burst forth and my body was shaking like a puppet on strings. i was fully conscious, but i wasn't controlling my tongue. the words just gushed out. within days i visited a upc for the first time. i was raised trinitarian pentecostal and had felt the spirit on my life before, but on my special night there was no church, just me and the spirit world.

Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
I was born and raised in an Apostolic preacher's home. I was baptized in Jesus' name before I was 9 years old. I was 10 years old at a junior camp. Bro. Edwin Young had finished preaching, and I wanted the Holy Ghost more than anything else. I do not remember much of anything except praying until I started speaking in tongues. I suppose that I prayed for all of a half-hour or so, but I do remember calling Mom and Dad at home afterword. There was a lot of excitement to that news.

Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
My Mom was Catholic when I was a child so I had never heard of receiving the Holy Ghost evidenced by speaking in tongues back then but I had a relationship with God, and had talked to him since I was about 5 years old.
When I was 11 years old, my Mom took me to a Trinitarian Pentecostal church at the invitation of some friends. I felt the presence of God in a powerful way and I responded to the altar call by walking up to the front and speaking in tongues. They explained to me what had happened and I was amazed by the experience, but we didn't continue attending that church, or going to church anywhere really. When I was 15, I was at the mall and a man walked up to me and showed me Acts 2:38 in the bible and invited me to church. This church was Pastored by Joel Velie at that time. I was filled again with the Spirit, and baptized in Jesus Name by Bro Velie. It wasn't until I was in my twenties though that my Mom, Sister, and I along with my Son all attended a Oneness Pentecostal church. I still attend one. |
Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
I remember when I was 9 (1978) in Oxnard, California under the pastor of Rev. Kenneth Fields. I remember saying to myself that I was going to go to the alter with the specific intent on getting the Holy Ghost. Bro. Fields and my dad was praying with me for just a few minutes when I started speaking in tongues with tears rolling down my cheek. Bro. Fields asked my dad if I had the Holy Ghost; when my dad said no, Bro. fields said "well he has it now." That was a wonderful experience that I shall never forget.

Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
As long as I can remember, going to church has been a part of my life. I used to be scared I wasn't going to heaven, and couldn't sleep at night, thinking about the rapture and not being ready.
Our church was having revival, and I was 5 years old. I remember being at the front of the church with several of my friends praying around me. As I heard them begin to speak in tongues, I wondered why I wasn't, and then I opened my eyes, and realized it wasn't just them speaking, but I was too, and all three of us received the Holy Ghost with the initial evidence of tongues at the same time. It was a glorious experience, one I have never forgotten. I remember asking my mom on the way home or later that night, if Jesus came back, would I go to heaven now. I was so scared about that! That has been over thirty years ago, and my walk with the Lord Jesus has been wonderful, and more precious than anything else to me. There have been many battles, mountains, valleys, storms, and yet, each day that I walk with the King of Kings, I realize how much I need HIM each and every day, and that I am NOTHING without HIM. I must decrease, so that He can increase in my life. When I realize just who I am in the light of eternity, and just how BIG God is.... it puts my life into perspective, and helps me to know how very blessed I am to have the Spirit of the God who created this universe living and dwelling inside of me. What a privilege we have been given, to have the Spirit of Jesus living in us, and along with that, a promise of eternal life with Jesus. This is true living indeed! |

Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
I was born again after listening to prayer on a tape with Vesta Magun teaching. I turned the tape off to see if the "feeling" was coming out of the speaker. I put my hands over the speaker... Still I felt the Holy Spirit pierce my heart. I cried and prayed to the Lord as I had never done before as an Old Order Mennonite.
The following year I attended a campmeeting where TF Tenney preached and I spoke in tongues after going through the prayer line. |
Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
I was 15-1/2 and at Illinois Youth Camp. Bro. Kaske had preached and it was the first night, I believe. They tell me that I danced all over the front of the tabernacle, but I don't remember any of it, except I do remember speaking in tongues for the first time ever. I had prayed for the Holy Ghost for 7 years. I think I just never understood how easy it was to receive it!

Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
About 6 or 7 years ago, my old pastor told me to run a lap around the church to take authority over the cigarettes that had me bound, halfway through I fell to the ground overcome with the spirit of God, started speaking in tongues.

Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
I was praying during the first song or two of song service and asking God to "please give me the holy ghost". I asked again and again and finally uttered the magic words "Please forgive me", and within a fraction of a second I spoke in other tongues in the same way that a person occasionally wakes up in bed with a sudden jerk.
Mystery for receiving the Holy Ghost solved! |
Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
Mom went was agreed to visit a church that a young lady in her school attended. The young lady had been teased and Mom wanted to make her happy. When they were in the service, she had never seen such before in her life. The people were raising their hands in worship, and there was a lot of expression. Mom thought that she would be fine as long as the other young lady was not acting that way. She was.
Mom started to cry during the song service, and did not understand what was happening. They explained repentance and took her to the altar. She knelt and being very shy, she prayed in a very tiny whisper. After a time she started speaking in tongues with the perception that she was going at the top of her lungs. However, she was so quite that they had to place a microphone to her lips, and one lady put her ear to the speaker in order to hear her. There was no preaching that night. Praise God for the way that He moves with His mighty power. |

Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
It was July 22, 1960 and there was a really good song service at what we termed "Bible Camp". The camp speaker and his wife got up to sing before he preached.
As they sang the power just fell, I and several others went to the altar while they were singing. Within minutes I was speaking in tongues! I was 11 years old and had been "raised" in church. The next night I and two others, that had received the Holy Ghost the night before, were baptized in Jesus Name. This was at a rented campground in Trego, WI. |
Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
I received the Holy Spirit right after I prayed an evil spirit out of the house.
(I said PRAY not SPRAY) |
Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
I really appreciate thost of you that shared your testimony so far, it encourages and strengthens me. So often we fail to think back and the times that God has shown up in our lives so greatly, and how that could give us the confidence to move foward into the challenges of today.
Over the weekend I was priviledged to see 6 people receive the Spirit of God and one young man delivered from the addiction of meth. I'm thankful that God is still saving, God is still renewing. I live in a world that I almost don't recognize anymore compared to the world of just 15 or 20 years ago. If I've ever felt like a stranger passing through, it's these days, but thank God for the fact that He nor His Word has ever changed. He's still filling men, women, boys and girls and delivering those that need to be set free... Praise God for His mighty Power!!!!! |
Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
Excellent. I love hearing of people receiving the Holy Ghost. It gives me hope and encouragement.

Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
I received the Holy Ghost at age 19 in a lady's house. It was an awesome experience. After being in the UPC for 19 years, pastoring for 10 of them, leaving the UPC and now church altogether, I still have times when, usually in my car, I reach for God and end up speaking in tongues. I reminisce, feel my friend, God, have some good times. I know He accepts me right where I am and I am thankful for that. There really is no condemnation. Funny, I always felt that when I was in church and now I don't. :)

Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
I was 9. Had been baptized by my father at the age of 5 and spent the next 4 yrs simply not really knowing what I was praying for. In a revival my dad was preaching in Molina Florida for Bro Neil I found what I had been looking for.
I had watched the night before as one of my new friends had been filled with the Holy Ghost and when my dad asked me why I had not received it that night I told him it was because when he prays with me he spits on me and it distracts me. WELL he did not pray with me the next night. I was at the altar and praying and I remember hearing my mom and Sis Neil praying with me and after that I remember coming back to reality laying on the floor. I knew something had happened because I could feel it inside of me. My mom told me later in life that when Bro Neil walked by me had laid his hand on my head and almost immediately I fell flat on the floor speaking in another language. At one point in my life I started to doubt it and while eating dinner one night and reading the book "They speak with other tongues" I simply started sobbing and speaking in tongues with no preamble to it. THAT had never happened before from the time I was 9 till I was in my 20's and looking for confirmation. It had always taken pray for some time or another to get tongues to flow again. Since that day it has not been difficult at all. Now all I need it to be in the presence of some people and tongues will want to flow. BUT then again the gift of tongues is NOT the same as when you receive the Holy Ghost. |
Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
I was raised Southern Baptist, and married a Pentecostal girl in 1992. At the time we got married, church and God wasn't a real priority to me. Initially, my wife and I had decided to go to different churches since we disagreed strongly on doctrine, because I believed the way I had been raised to believe. She started going to a local UPC church, and I stayed home and watched football.
Eventually, she convinced me to go to church with her, and to take a bible study. The minister who taught my bible study was very patient and answered all of my questions and arguments. I received the Holy Ghost in a revival at the church in January of 1994 and was baptized in Jesus' name about two weeks later. |
Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
Raised Southern Baptist, visited a Pentecostal (UPC) church for the first time in my teens. I had always thought these folks were crazy, but I had a holy visitation from the Lord that night that I never could get over or forget.
My life got in a mess a couple of years later, and I turned to the Lord and started going to the church where I had felt a visitation from God. I gave my life to Jesus and was baptized in Jesus name. A few months later during the preaching, just like in Acts 10, I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, speaking with other tongues as the Spirit gave the utterance. I've never been the same since. |
Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
When you guys where filled with the "holyghost" and spoke in tongues did anyone around you understand just as they ones listening in the bible did that heard them speaking? If not how do you know you truly had the holyghost "with the so called evidence" that does not match the first time the holyghost was poured out...
Acts 2 New International Version (NIV) Acts 2 The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost 1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken |
Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?

Acts 9:17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord-Jesus who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here-has sent me so that ye may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit." Immediately something like scales fell from Saul's eyes and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strength. You should note that Saul (Paul) was filled with the Holy Spirit with only Ananias near him at the time. Although this passage does not say that he actually spoke in tongues, we know that eventually Paul admitted to speaking in tongues in in 1 Corinthians 14:18 which would conclude that Paul received the Holy Spirit speaking in tongues when only Ananias was around. Why would Paul need to do that when Ananias spoke the same language? My fear, is that you are really arguing with the experience of everyone on this forum for your own benefit. Can you fight against a testimony of so many on this thread? I think your efforts are futile if you ask me. |
Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
1 Corinthians 14
1Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. 2For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. 3But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. 4He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. 5I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. 6Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? so that tells me that Ananias clearly understood what he was saying... |

Re: When I Got the Holy Ghost... How About You?
I guess it just all boils down to what you want to believe 2 pieces of scripture the contradict one another within 3 verses...why would Paul have to speak in tongues at Ananias house what would that prove..Ananias already removed the scales from his eyes.. And also the scripture states Repent,Be Baptised and be filled with the holyghost not be filled with the holyghost then be baptised as in Saul/Pauls case....so why do you think after they heard the Acts 2:38 messege that they would go and do it backwards??
