Unplugging My Personal Computer

I will still post to AFF from work, but I am unpuggling my personal computer and placing it in my closet, for now.

This action is one of the actions I agreed to take with my accountability partner. It is a necessary limit on my personal freedom in an attempt to further establish my personal freedom from sin.

This is not so different from the practice of "standards"-- but I acknowledge that my weakness is not a mandate for all of my Christans brothers and sisters to unplug their personal computers.

Neither will I be offended if you were to have me over for dinner and I saw that you had your very own personal computer.

This is necessary for me and probably not for you-- which is why I'll never be a good legalist.

I'll be around.

So, because you have justified ripping off your employer to post here,
but not on your own time, do you have any objection to us trashing your
posts on the weekend?

(OMG, what is my problem? I pretty much always agree with your posts)

I'm curious if you would have any problem with pork roast,
when you come over for dinner : )

I saw some tv commercial about unplugging the electronics and getting out to nature, and at the end they said ''for more information go to www,backtonature.com". I thought that was kinda funny. :slaphappy

I can understand Jermyn wanting to stay away from posting on his own time. :nod

Many here take breaks from this forum because sometimes posting here just "does something to ya". :D

I just put my old computer in the closet...........

...because it's been replaced by a smokin black, searing hot, "straight from the pit of hell", mad over-clockable monster sporting the latest from ASUS and Intel!

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w...-40-04_938.jpg

Still a few tiny glitches to work out though. :)

I do believe that door swings both ways. LOL

And this system is something I have waited my whole life for (and will be REALLY happy once I get all the kinks ironed out). It is the first computer I ever owned or built where I didn't cut every single corner. I DID cut a few, just not as many as usual. LOL

We converted a bunch of our old laptops at work which are all on their last legs to Ubuntu (from XP). It seems to have given them a jolt of new life.

RandyWayne,...
Where did you get that awsome computer??????
I had the Good Lord,...just recently drop me one "out-of-the-blue" to add to my collection recently.

OK,...so I live in an apartment complex that just so happens to face the trash dump. I looked out veeeeerrrry early the other morning to see that someone (bless their soul) left a P4 computer and monitor nicely placed in front of the dumpster. Meself went and snatched. So far the monitor is working fine. Computer needs a little work. Just adds to my about 5 or 6 older computers as is. I run mostly Linux on 'em. (LOL)! :happydance

Need any working copies of XP? I have been saving quite a few of the serial numbers on our old XP laptops we've been throwing away or installing Ubuntu on. I put Win 7 Pro (had to use Pro since it recognizes all 32 gigs -Home Premium only goes up to 16).

I get the responsibility of the pc's that come into
the thrift store, to rehab them, and sell ($ for food bank); most have xp already, but that might come in handy.

I'm more interested in the Ubuntu/new life thing, as we get a lot of
laptops (that I rehab and often give to needy kids) that are donated mostly because they just don't have the RAM, etc. to deal with current progs?

How hard to install Ubuntu? ty

Ubuntu is very easy to install, especially on older laptops where it is a pain to find all the Windows drivers. Ubuntu is typically downloaded as an .iso file which you then burn onto a CD or DVD then simply boot the machine with that disk in it and follow the prompts.

You can get the current version here:
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail...u/1097960777/1

Another nice thing about Ubuntu is how easy it is to update -very much like Microsoft's own update program built into Windows.

I don't think there is an anyone out there who would want to be my accountability partner. I guess that is what my wife is for.

Most employers do not ban personal interaction on the internet, but do ask you to exercise moderation.
I admire you for taking this step JD.
I have several close friends/relatives who have also taken this step, in order to break some things that were hindering their walk with God.

Well I'm plugged in again.

We'll see if I continue to practice holiness.

Every so often I "fast" AFF and/or Facebook for a while. They can be so addictive and rob time from more important things.

Also there are times I have to "fast" chocolate because that is a real addiction to me. And I've even been known to "fast" desserts and snacks for periods of time. But I'm still too heavy.

Re: Unplugging My Personal Computer

I've had 3 Computers --all Mac

The first was a 350 MHz iMac G3 which I received for Christmas 2000
640 MB Memory
40 GB Hard Drive
OS 10.3.9
This has been retired.

The second is a 800 MHz iBook G4, purchased 2/6/2004
640 MB Memory
30 GB Hard Drive
OS 10.4.11 Tiger
I still use this but it's pretty limited.

The third is a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac,
purchased 11/8/2007
4 GB Memory
300 GB Hard Drive
OS 10.6.3 Snow Leopard
This is my main computer and I will install Mac's latest operating system-Lion- some time before the end of the month.
