Would you eat or have you eaten...
Goat?
Rabbit? Emu? Racoon? Rabbit? Opossum? Bear? Snake? Other game/wild meats? And why or why not? Also what part of the country are you in (or did you grow up in) if you do eat game meats. |
Re: Would you eat or have you eaten...
How about gator????
|
Re: Would you eat or have you eaten...
I've eaten: river turtle, gator, frog legs, snails, deer/stag
what I won't eat: dog, horse, veal I ate veal once by accident in Italy, I thought I ordered scallops. |
Re: Would you eat or have you eaten...

Yes No Yes Not ever Nope No I've eaten a wild boar hog a few hours after granny shot him down with a straight prejudice. And he was delicious! Also eaten plenty of deer, some squirrel, some yard chicken. Most of this was eaten in my native Arkansas. Had veal and lamb here in B'Ham. NOT impressed with the veal. |

rabbit (not a favorite) venison (LOVE it!) bear (too greasy) boar (ok) squirrel (edible, but again, not a favorite) possum (YUCK!!) pheasant (LOVE it!) wild turkey (good) duck (another not a favorite) moose (ok) horse (we were kids and very, very poor one winter. My parents found a source of horsemeat that could be purchased for a little bit of nothing - definitely not a legal purchase, but it got us thru. you do what you have to do to feed your family, I guess. We didn't know until years later what we had eaten) We had a farm in our area that sold ostrich meat for a number of years. We ate lots of that at our house. It's extremely low in fat but very tasty. It wasn't cheap, but it was so good FOR you :) Our church does a wild game dinner every year so because of that, I've also eaten walrus, gator, and a number of other things I would never had the opportunity to taste any other way. Why do you ask? I'm curious :) |
Re: Would you eat or have you eaten...
Elk will put you off beef forever;
surprised it didn't make the list? |

I also horrified everyone around me when my 1,300 pound gelding died suddenly. I wanted to process him for dog food. There was not a soul who did not think I was disgusting for that... So I paid $800 to have a backhoe bury him and the worms got all that good meat. I'm not going to claim I liked all the things I've eaten... the bear meat was from Alaska and was greasy and fishy-not-in-a-good-way and the 'possum tasted trashy like garbage fed pork. So I was just wanting to know if there are others like me or where most of you draw the line. And the question about where you live... I expected this food snob attitude in my native Los Angeles but I am surprised it is so common in Texas. |

If you don't mind saying, why would you not eat the animals you've listed as nos (really I don't have to ask about the dog :)) |
Re: Would you eat or have you eaten...
Hmm, you didn't strike me as the type to waste
1/2 ton of premium dog food... and yes, snails are slimy; they are like the softest part of a clam. |
Re: Would you eat or have you eaten...
I try to stay with the three basic food groups.
Pork, chicken, and beef. I have eaten wild duck, not sure about some of the others on your list. |

I think I would eat any of the list if I was hungry enough. So I won't rule anything out.

Re: Would you eat or have you eaten...
I've eaten gator. It wasn't bad at all. Nothing like I expected - I expected it to be very fishy, which it wasn't.
I've also had frog legs. My dad and mom and dad's sister and her husband used to go fishing all night and would often come home with several frogs. My grandma would fry them up for us. We would laugh at them jumping around in the pan. We only had possum once. My mom had cooked it up and bbq'd it. When we got home from school, the sandwiches were waiting for us for snack. We all grabbed one and were all excited to get BBQ beef for a snack! Till we tasted it. Then we almost spit it out. We told her there "something really wrong with this cow". LOL |
Re: Would you eat or have you eaten...

Re: Would you eat or have you eaten...
I have had a variety of different meats but one I didn't see mentioned was kangaroo.
|
Re: Would you eat or have you eaten...
I grew up in the mid-west hunting and eating with much enthusiasm deer, dove, frog, rabbit and squirrel. I lived in a french settlement so turtle and muskrat were big. Thumbs up for turtle, thumbs way down for muskrat. Muskrat is dark meat and tastes a lot like sea weed smells... gross. I've had black bear sausage(yummy with course mustard), elk, moose and gator tail. I do love the veal too.

Re: Would you eat or have you eaten...
We butcher our calves as 'rose veal' which is never confined but is a young steer that is still nursing. They live a very natural life, being kept with their momma cow and getting plenty of fresh grass and sunshine.
Very tender and tasty. |

Bacon, bacon, bacon. I LOVE bacon!!

Re: Would you eat or have you eaten...
I have eaten rabbit, squirrel, gator, frog legs and racoon in the US. In South Africa I ate ostrich (yes, it tastes like chicken), eland (YUM), zebra (YUCK), kudu sausage (not a big fan, but okay) and my favorite was giraffe.

I have eaten:
Rabbit Racoon Opossum Snake Squirrel Gar Deer Buffulo Quail Duck I love wild game. Most of my eating of this was when I was young and lived at home. Dad was the gamehunter and provided for us. My husband was not so much a hunter or fisherman. I live the taste of wild game. And the way that my mom used to prepare it. Quote:

Just look at all that lard!! Do you render it out and use that to cook with, Titus? My mom always did when we were kids. I loved the little pieces that came to the top. I think they were cracklin's? DELICIOUS!!

Best red meat I've ever tasted was boar burgers. I dunno if wild though, it didn't have a gamey flavor...
|
Re: Would you eat or have you eaten...
I never liked fish growing up but it has become one of my favorite "meats" the past 10-12 years. Talapia is one of my favs.
