For Unpaid College Loans, Feds Dock Social Securit

More retirees are falling behind on student debt, and Uncle Sam is coming after their benefits.

Sounds fair to me. Too many people treat student loans as something less than a serious obligation. should be the same as a home mortgage or car loan. If you forfeit - lose the degree.

I disagree. Sometimes it's hard for graduates to find a job that pays enough to repay the loan and have enough left for rent and other necessities. Getting an education costs too much.

It is a bit more complicated than that. Government loans have forced the cost of tuition through the roof, now it is almost a necessity for a student to take out loans. And unlike other unsecured loans you can't get out of these, short of death.

I know that loans have forced tuition through the roof and that you can't declare bankruptcy on these but WHY have they forced tuition through the roof? What is the cause and effect here?

Because the higher the government raises the limits on these loans the higher the tuition goes, not as a result of normal supply and demand but as an artificial government push of prices. If students attended college based on scholarships and cash on hand the supply of students would be lower or the cost of tuition would have to be lowered to meet the actual abilities of students.

Yes, that's what I thought. I read not to long ago where our local chancellor of a fairly small college was getting about $345,000 a year in salary. When I read things like that and then they say tuition is going through the roof and the colleges talk about how we all have to make sacrifices to keep tuition low, it sounds like a crock.

But tuition going up is because the government broke the normal laws of supply and demand. Got it. Makes sense. Thanks.

If you run a college, and you know that if you raise tuition the Gov will always provide enough in loans to meet that tuition...why not raise it and get that good ol Gov money?

I have a feeling that if the Fed cut the amount of money available to students for loans in half, you would see tuition drop dramatically.

Um, you could move to Saudi Arabia,
where we send all our (children's) money,
and college tuition is free.

Even for women?

This is what I know. I saw at least one new big one (college) in Riyadh. Our driver told me the princess (Nora something?) built it. I heard of but did not see one in Dammam (east side) and another one in Jeddah (west side). One of my division heads was getting his daughter enrolled at the one in Dammam which is how I knew of that one.

The one in Riyadh is a HUGE campus and brand new and I (think) it is the biggest women-only university in the world.

Stolen/reprinted from an article:

Women make up 58 percent of the total student population of 130,000 at seven universities in Saudi Arabia, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Most of the female Saudi graduates appeared to be going into either medical? or teaching? from what I could tell. My wife for instance never saw a male doctor while we were there. Our pediatrician / her OB were both women.

Awesome!

Many women are much more comfortable seeing a woman doctor. They are not so quick to label women's symptoms as "hysteria". They have more empathy towards other women than male doctors.

I find this especially encouraging, as I doubt the
Rockefellers have the same stranglehold
on the profession there.

The medical care in the mideast
(lol, and prolly Mexico)
certainly blows ours away; I have a story
about a friend who went to the Hospital
in Eilat (on a Sabbath, no less) that I used to tell,
but stopped telling it because I don't think
anyone believed me. Or they did,
and the truth was just too painful.

I understand it's not a good policy to have the Fed Gov tinker with almost anything.

But the ultimate responsibility is still on the individual who willingly signs for the loan. It does not matter if the tuition costs ten times more than its worth. There should be full expectation the loan is paid back.

Unless the person is handicapped etc., I am also against any abnormal interest reduction subsidies.

Btw, are we talking about retirees who took out
loans as students, and still have not repaid them?

They are docking retiree benefits for loans they took out for their children for the most part

So like co-signing for their kid? Really? Yes, they should pay it back then. I would not co-sign on a new Trans Am for my child, so why cosign on a pricey education and be excused?

Probably and most likely federally insured loans they took out on their own for their children under the PLUS plan.

They are never forgiven and never go away either.
