My CPR certification class starts in 45 minutes.

Did two years go by so soon??

Lord knows I hate these classes. The thought of kissing a dummy (living or non) that someone else has is just horrible.

Simple solution? Buy an ambu bag and keep it in your medical kit in your car. :)

Probably a good idea.

Except I have one question....

What is an "ambu" bag?

Holy cow, that thing is expensive! Do you have any idea how many boxes of ammo I could get for that?

I have performed CPR many times. Generally with the aid of proper equipment, but at least once (against my better judgement) with no barrier at all.

Many times? Do you just find yourself around people in cardiac arrest?

I am an EMT and have responded (as a volunteer) to over 1,000 "medical emergencies". Of these maybe 30? included CPR per our Dept. SOPs.

It was my job. Sometimes as many as 3 cardiac arrests per day.

Ultimately, I will still do it if I don't have a barrier if the need arises. I just hope it doesn't.

I hope this isn't her in about 30 years. If it is, I can safely say that I will probably be much worse. :)

She understands. :)

I don't even like to entertain the thought that it could possibly be her someday.

Right, but maybe use a shirt or something as a filter. I got a mouthful of projectile "vomitus".

And that's all I have to say about that... .

That would be an intense situation.

Well by now you know that breaths are not given the importance they were last time you took the class... as a matter of fact for 1 person CPR they are few and far between.

An ambu bag is expensive but Red Cross sells masks with a one way valve that are folded up and packaged so tiny they can go on your keys. Scroll down this page about 1/2 way:

http://www.first-aid-product.com/ind...r-keychain.htm

They are under $2. I bought a bulk lot at the last training I did for ACLS and only paid $0.59/ea for them. I keep one on my keys, another in my purse, one in my desk, a handful in my car and a few around the farm... house, barns, etc.

I've also had a mouth-full of emesis and plan to never ever ever ever do that again. Thankfully it was a child and it was mostly just swimming pool water but ewww...

I just got BLS certified because my nursing classes start Monday. (!) I hope to not have to do CPR. I would rather not work in any type of trauma or emergency. Give me the shot room, for example. :)

I worked as a Registered Respiratory Therapist.

It was exhausting because this was in addition to all my regular assigned duties. Oh there were some days that we did not have any Cardiac Arrests. But I can remember times when the sick exhausted all our reserves of life support and we had to emergency ship ventilators to the hospital from other hospitals.

How long did you do that for and why did you leave if you don't mind my asking?

You will have to do CPR. Anybody who works in any healthcare facility, childcare facility, school, manufacturing nurse, etc will have to learn CPR.
It's not a big deal. What you won't have to do is intubate them...just have to make sure they get air.

We did all the intubating (inserting an airway tube into the trachea via mouth using a laryngoscope) and trying to get arterial blood while someone is doing compressions. Ever stick a needle in someone's groin trying to draw blood while the body is bouncing up and down during compressions?

I got quite good at it. :)

I'm retired now,..so I don't have to keep updating CPR for the card. My daughter is now a nurse,...so she has to.

I never understood why I had to "get certified" when I did the procedure nearly every day.

..maybe it's because they keep fiddling with, and changing the rules all the time! You know how it is in health-care,...everyone has to "CY_" (cover their own backsides).. :heeheehee (sorry 'bout that,...but that's how health-care works, y'know).

With the constant changing rules, they want to be SURE you have that little currently issued card on you. No telling how CPR will change in the future.
