New Tattoos

At the risk of being stoned on here, I want to confess that both of my kids got tattoos yesterday. They are 18 and almost 25, so there isn't much I could say about it, and they forked over the money. When I first saw them, I was a little freaked otu, but they are both Christian symbols and they feel like they are a witness to their peers. I have very mixed emotions about tattooing; I can't really say that it's Biblically wrong, but I could never get one. I can't even pierce my ears; just a personal thing.

My son got a "chi rho" (Christian symbol) on his wrist and my daughter got "My God is Eternal" in Hebrew on her arm. They are thrilled with them. Maybe I'm just too old to understand the fascination. I told them it's a fad, and when they are fifty like me, it will not be so cute. How did these free-siprited non-conformist children come from my womb???? I know on here I am considered liberal, but actually I am a very conservative thinking, non-risk-taking, level headed person.

Oh well, I guess I should be thankful that they are good kids, totally in love with Jesus, and willing to tell the world. When I came home last night, they and two other young people were in the living room listening to a sermon on DVD by a youth pastor in Washington, and my daughter was just weeping. I thought then that I may not totally understand them, but they are sold out radical young people. They have both recently had such an influence on their friends in the world; way more than I ever did at their ages.

So, what's the big deal about tattoos anyway? I guess they can always have them surgically removed if they get old and wrinkled.

Well, you'll probably hear someone quoting from an Old Testament prohibition of making cuttings in your flesh to express grief but not hear that YHWH has His people tattooed in His hands (Isa 49:16).

I have a tattoo. If I could, I would cover it with something else. It hurts less than having it removed.

I would fear the Hebrew did not say what they thought it said!

Oh no, she's smarter than that. She researched it for weeks on the internet and got it translated and took it to them. They taped it to her arm so she could make sure they were doing it exactly right.

No, he paid for his own and she paid for hers. Lovely bonding time. Ha! Rodney went with them for moral support. Ashley has one on her back already, but people don't really see it. This one is much more focal. She said they are personal reminders to her of the God of the nations. Whatever.....LOL!

Yeah right!! Just say I wanted a tattoo....lol I knew about the one on her back already. Tabo wants one but hasn't worked up the nerve yet. What did Pastor say about it?

"You can't fix stupid" was probably the first thing that came to his mind, but he didn't say it. He just thinks they're young and foolish! LOL! He tried to talk her out of it just from a professional viewpoint, but she's pretty set in her ways. Wonder where she gets that???

CC1 05-27-2007 11:18 PM

I hate tatoos and all of my kids knew that would never happen as long as they were in my house and minors.

Only one of my three was that nonconformist. My Marine son has two or three big ugly tatoos that distress me greatly but he got them after he was grown and out of the house so I cannot do anything about it.

I hate to see them though. I could have accepted some small USMC tatoo but these are big giant ones. One is a Texas Longhorn skull. Very disgusting. One of my biggest disappointments is that I raised a child who thought this was a good idea.

berkeley 05-27-2007 11:19 PM

CC,

Let it go!!!

Just the other day a child asked me what God thought about tatoos. I told her very little. God doesn't seem to care either way. (Assuming one hasn't gone completely haywire with them and looks like a freak or prison gang member).

HOWEVER, I went on to remind her that tatoos are permanent (unless pain is involved) and why would anyone want to wear the same outfit or mark every day?

I have explained to my son in the past that tatoos are similar to marriage in that they are a permanent choice; BUT they aren't as flexible as marriage because tatoos can't grow with you.

How could anyone know with certainty, at the age of 25 or even 30, how they want to be identified the rest of their lives? (Thankfully, Sheri's kids' tatoos are ones that will forever be etched into their hearts too but that isn't always so).

I have further noted that a cute little dophin can turn into a whale as one ages and loose much of its original appeal.

So no; I don't think one or two "clean" tatoos are a sin, but certainly a choice I would encourage young people to avoid.

But overall Sherri; I wouldn't lose sleep over what your kids did. In fact, on some level, I would find their commitment to Christ etched forever on their skin to be a pretty strong statement at this point in their lives and at least feel good about their choice of identity.

And that's my take~

HAHA very funny BOOMM! As I told Berk the other night, my town has one traffic light, one restaurant, not EVEN big enough for a McDonalds or a Wal-Mart, and our claim to fame is a dead sheriff who is a legend in his own right. Ever heard of Walking Tall?

That movie was ......... There were three originals back in the 70's. Buford's daughter is so sorry that she let them do the remake with the Rock, because it was so twisted.
