Yes, she is awesome!

I am willing to bet that woman has seen a lot in her lifetime.

I wish I could get inside her head!

I am so happy I had the opportunity in 2010 to spend about a week at her house. At that time, she was still able to play Scrabble. She was not used to being beat, and I beat her. (She was still very good!) She accused me of cheating!! LOL!!

She had such a beautiful view of the ocean from her house. I am so fortunate to have been a part of this family. I wish I could have been around them more. (I was raised 1800 miles away from them.) But being there as much as I was was awesome. When my Grandma turned 96, she said "Four more years!" so, I hope she makes it to her next one. ;) She was put into a nursing home last year after her kids took care of her in her house 24/7 for a number of years. She doesn't speak much anymore. French is her mother tongue but she speaks English perfectly as well.

She is truly an amazing woman! Wonderful that all 14 kids were able to help her celebrate her 99th birthday too! I can only imagine how big the extended family is with all the grandkids, and great-grandkids!

I don't know. I remember when she had 52 grandchildren, they said she had a full deck of cards (she loves playing cards...). I think there are 60 some or maybe even 70. Most of the 14 children had fairly large families. We have from zero (barren) to 7 children. Many had 4-6 so I have a bazillion first cousins. I have no idea how many great grandchildren...

By the way, they are all Catholic except one Mormon and one trinitarian Pentecostal.

Awesome and amazing! You have a beautiful heritage. One in the photo must be your father? or ... mother?

My mother is in the photo. It is truly an awesome and amazing heritage. I wish I could go be with my Gram right now. She has many, many people with her right now. She has made so many comebacks it has been amazing. I keep expecting her to make another one, since at age 96, she said "Four more years!" However, seeing her in the pictures and videos, she has declined so much. They think this is really the end. I have been so blessed to have a part in this family. I wish I could have been around them more when I was young. (We lived 1800 miles away.) I have seen this strong Catholic family live their lives in faith and be blessed with the blessings that go with that. It has been truly incredible.

I had the opportunity, deciding kind of on a sudden spurt, to go visit my Grandmother while my Mom was on the island in 2010 (Prince Edward Island, where my grandmother lives) and I stayed for 10 days. My immediate family was very supportive of this as when I mentioned it casually, that it was in the back of my mind, they practically pushed me out the door. I will never, ever regret doing so. I got to spend some very quality time with her.

Thank you all for your prayers. With my grandmother goes the hub of the wheel, when she is gone.....we all splinter off into our families. We should all leave such a heritage....

Are you talking about this quote?

You cannot change the people around you but you can change the people you choose to be around.

Yes, I hope you don't mind. I know some people that need to learn that. I did give you credit. :) Wonder how many people will be trying to figure out ILG? :D

Re: My Awesome Grandma

I'm so sorry ILG. I know this is a tremendous loss, not only in your life, but in the hearts of your family, something is gone that can never be replaced. I understand what you mean about the "hub" of the wheel, once it is gone, it is hard to continue on with the traditions that always were. I will be praying that your family will still be able to bind together, and continue on the traditions as your grandma lived them. And that you will be comforted in the midst of your sorrow.

Thank you all. We won't be making the funeral since it is so far away. My immediate family and some of my extended family will be attending Mass in my grandmother's honor this weekend. My Mom felt that would be an excellent tribute and way to honor her and celebrate her life.

Sorry for your loss ILG. One thing you haven't lost is the good memories your grandma left for you. What a treasure! Your family photo is so rare that I saved it to my own photo album to remind myself every now and then how important family is and our own personal heritage. Thanks for posting and including us in this memory about your grandmother!

Thanks, PO. It is more or less my choice. I visited her in 2010 while she was alive. I hope to pay my respects on the island at a later date.

Re: My Awesome Grandma

You know something else about those 14 children? Not ONE of them got divorced. ALL married young and stayed married to the first person they married still or until death. (2 spouses have passed). There was one spouse that had been previously married. That's it. Most of the grandchildren are the same but there are a few divorces amongst us.
