Pastor Shelly Hendricks Resigns
Sunday November 25
Pastor Shelly Hendricks has resigned as pastor of GracePointe Church 7630 View Place Dr. Cincinnati, OH 45224 http://gracepointcincinnati.com The Church is currently listed as Covenant Apostolic Church in the UPCI list of churches http://www.upci.com/churchlocator/searchBy_Pastor.aspx Our family was part of that church for most of the 1960's and 1970's when it was known as The Carthage Apostolic Church and Pastor Joe David Sizemore was our Pastor. Pastor Hendricks posted the following on Facebook today: Today Trona and I faced one of the more difficult decisions in our Journey with God. For 10 years GracePoint has been such a vital part of our ministry. Our lives will never be the same because of the wonderful people that God allowed us to Pastor. It is with a heavy heart that we choose to resign as the Pastor of GracePoint Church.... God has a great plan and future for GracePoint. We love each one of you dearly and you will always hold a special place in our hearts. For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jer. 29:11 |

It is listed as UPC because Bro. Hendricks is UPC. When Bro. Sizemore was pastor it was listed by the ALJC. The church is also affiliated with Joel Osteen in some way. Joel recorded a video advertising Bro. Hendricks' church back before he (Joel) came to the Cincinnati area. |
Re: Pastor Shelly Hendricks Resigns
Where can we find the Video of the Advertisment.? for Joel Osteen

Re: Pastor Shelly Hendricks Resigns
They look stupid in beards. They can't pull off the look. Facial hair makes some men loom more manly. Has the opposite effect on these guys.

Re: Pastor Shelly Hendricks Resigns
I have heard that name before but don't remember in what context. Didn't really find out anything about the church from a quick google church other than it was incorporated July 2012. I am assuming maybe the new non profit Corporation was due to a church name change.
If anybody knows the history of the Hendricks and this church it would be interesting to know. Based on the recent pics with facial hair and the name change of the church makes me think they have "gone charismatic" as my UPC friends like to say! |
Re: Pastor Shelly Hendricks Resigns
I knew the former pastor but do not know the pastor that just resigned...they look like sweet people.

Even their little girl is wearing an earring! The beards look outta place-- not because their UPCI, but because it makes them look a bunch of wolverines protecting a vampiress. Seriously, is this some kind of joke or something? |
Re: Pastor Shelly Hendricks Resigns
I golfed with him at our last JCM reunion in Nashville. Nice guy!

The church was organized after a group split from the UPC church in Cincinnati which was pastored by Frank Curts. The split from what I understand was over the way money was handled (nobody seemed to know how much money came in and where it went), a pastor who had sole say --no board to control him, and of course the usual women stories. This was in 1945. Some of those who left were deacons and elders. Families were split. The church was considered UPC for a very brief time. I've heard that but don't know anything else about it. There were around 20 some people who organized the new church. The first pastor was E.G. Lowe who served until 1947. I don't know anything about him. The Church was called the Full Gospel Church and purchased a building (an old machine shop) which was modified to seat a couple hundred people. I've seen a picture of a "record attendance" of 198 in that building. The next pastor was James Verdier who served until October 1952. He was replaced by Joe David Sizemore who took over as pastor in January, 1953. He was 21 years old and his wife Jackie was 19. I have seen a picture of the church with a "record" attendance" of 250 in October 1953. In 1960 they bought property and built a new church in the Carthage area of Cincinnati and it was named the Carthage Apostolic Church. In April 1962 they had a "record attendance" of 370. That's where we went as a family in 1963 or 1964. Bro. Sizemore was a member of the ALJC. We left that church in 1978 or maybe 1979. At that time property had been purchased for a newer and larger church. In 1980 ground was broken and some time in 1981 they moved into the new building and the name was changed to Covenant Apostolic. As Bro. Joe David Sizemore got older, his son David became pastor and Joe David was considered the Bishop in 2000. This caused some problems and some people left and formed another church in a nearby city called Loveland, OH. Bro. Joe David Sizemore's health deteriorated and he wound up being on dialysis. When he was in the hospital I went to visit him and prayed for him. He and his wife were both very cordial even though I'm sure they considered me a "prodigal" and had not seen me for years. Bro. Sizemore died right around New Years day 2003. He had cleared out his office in the church and was going to go to Florida and live out his remaining days there. His son David resigned as pastor so the church had no pastor for a brief time. Shelly Hendricks, a graduate of JCM and a UPC minister took over. There were problems over the years as Bro. Hendricks "relaxed" the standards and women in pants and earrings began to take an active part. Also there were Hispanics and African Americans coming to the church which upset some folks. A year of two ago the church some how became affiliated with Joel Osteen. As the "standards" were modified (or abandoned as some folks would say) many of the people left and now attend the UPC churches pastored by Norman Paslay and Joel Urshan in this area. Today my wife was talking with an old friend that we had not heard from for many years. I will be 75 years old on December 6 and on December 8 we are having an open house and had sent out letters inviting people. She had received her invitation in today's mail and called to tell us that she and her husband would be here if possible. She is 80 years old or maybe a year or tow more and in pretty bad shape physically. She and her husband have attended the church pastored by Joel Urshan for some time now. She told my wife today "Bro. Hendricks should have resigned long ago before he ruined the church." She things that the church will just "disband" and sell the building. |
Re: Pastor Shelly Hendricks Resigns
Are they moving to West Monroe to make duck calls?

Re: Pastor Shelly Hendricks Resigns
I agree with you JD, if they were upci, they would look like an amish version of Children of the Corn.

I find it kind of amusing that a man with such an unusual first name would marry a woman with an equally unusual first name. In any case I hope all is well with them and the church they are leaving. |

First the beard then the backsliding...you see the pattern so often.

Re: Pastor Shelly Hendricks Resigns
Rob Yanok just started a church in Cincinnati last year and Joel Osteen did a promo for it. It's called Gracetown, I think. So you might be thinking of it instead of this one. I think Shelly Hendrick's church was Covenant Church, unless it changed names again.

Re: Pastor Shelly Hendricks Resigns
I believe Rob's church is in Columbus, OH

Re: Pastor Shelly Hendricks Resigns
Shelly is a friend of mine. He's a good guy. The comments about his beard and his family are really stupid since you obviously don't know him. The folksnthat got upset about the minorities in his church are racists and not Christian since those people reflected the community in which the church was located. Shelly just decided to reach the neighborhoods around the church.
Sometimes Apostolic churches carry such a large amount of dysfunction that when a transformation takes place, people can't grow with the transformation. They are damaged goods to begin with and their spiritual depth and understanding is about thimble deep. Folks miss the good ole days of youth rallies, evangelists and revivals, choirs and camp meetings. No one bothers to ask if this is where God is, and is this what He's asking of us. No, we're simply happy to exist in our little Pentecostal church culture bubble, while the neighborhood around our church hasn't a clue, while the community doesn't even know we exist. So someone comes along and tries to follow the Lord and follow the Scripture. Comfortable church folks get uncomfortable and they take their tithes and offerings elsewhere to a church that will help preserve the church of their youth: singing 1940s hymns, dress codes from the 50s and an all white congregation... |

The Church's name was changed a while back from Covenant Apostolic to GracePointe a while back. I don't know if this was before or after the incident where a Day Care worker there was convicted of drugging at least one of the children in her care. The Church is currently (at least it was a couple days ago when I checked) listed in the UPC web site as Covenant Apostolic |

You are right about that extra letter I've been adding but actually I added an "e" instead of an "i". I'm used to adding that "e" because of a local ministry here called CrossPointe "older" guys develop habits that are hard to break |
