Sinful Pleasure

Are there any sinful songs, songs that have nothing to do with the cause of Christ at all, songs that endorse or reference sin, any song (s) like this that you still like?

I am a bit troubled about this one song by a rap artist named Lil Wayne that I like a whole lot. There is nothing Christ-like about the song, but honestly, I like the song a whole lot.

I don't think I should even listen to the song, let alone like it.

I really don't listen to rap music-- most of the songs I listen to are Gospel / Contemporary Christian.

But I like this one Lil Wayne song. It's bad and I think I am in trouble.

I like Nickleback... "Something in Your Mouth" and "Shakin' Hands".

We all have a darker side to our nature. Songs like these appeal to it. I had to git rid of the album and focus in on Christian music.

Outside of Christian I like a lot of Jazz. Michael Buble is one of my favorites as is Harry Connick Jr. Some of these can be sultry, but they are not as crude. For example Michael Buble's "Moondance" and Harry Connick Jr.'s "Let Me Love Tonight". Since these songs are about love and passion, they can be dedicated as easily to a spouse as a lover.

Other than these, I like country music, but take it in small doses.

It helps when I realize that music is simply "art". Some art is passionate. Therefore it shouldn't suprise us that some music is passionate. Read the Song of Solomon. Here we read about two lovers who fantasize hot and heavy about each other, and although nothing specifically is said about their wedding, they generally aren't regarded as being married until like chapter 4. Passion is a very human emotion. And we're designed to feel it and desire it. It's a gift if enjoyed in the right context. At least, that's MY opinion.

If something troubles me, I try to remove it if possible, confess it, give my desires to God, and walk on in grace. I'm human and will be until glorification. And oh what a day that will be!

My problem is almost the inverse of yours. I WANT to like/listen to Christian music (of any kind) but I just can't stand the utter mediocrity I hear when I attempt to listen. One of my guilty pleasures is listening to my Queens Greatest Hits CD set along with Duran Duran, Madonna, and STYX (all 'Greatest Hits' compilations). When I need to get away from those types of artists I go to my favorite instrumental/New Age ones as a fill in for the uplifting what I SHOULD be getting from Christian music.

I can't stand most modern 'christian' music. Sounds too much like that ............ wanna-be genre they call 'alternative'.

I LOVE some old fashioned hymns, and I REALLY love a capella psalm singing, Sacred Heart singing, and 'early music' (ie medieval music).

Every now and then, I get the old urge to crank up the Slayer and Exodus, however.

HAHA! I can't believe the text editor edited out a term I used, considering some of the other things I've read here.

I just love listening to old stuff by The Imperials. I cannot believe the depth I hear, spiritually speaking, compared to the tripe now being played on Christian stations.

I have a small collection of music that I can imagine being played by members of the Irish Republican Army during "down times" in their never ending fight.

Music is one of those delicate subjects that can really confuse people. Someone might say, "I only listen to Christian/Apostolic music!!!" After watching unbelievable conduct from people while they're emotionally drunk in Church, you have to ask yourself, "Which is worse?"

I've seen Led Zeppelin, Peter Frampton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Santana, Gary Wright, Bad Company, Cheap Trick, Edgar Winter, Heart, and tons of other bands, LIVE, and I never observed the craziness I've seen in Religion at these concerts. Yeah, we were high and not living like the Religious Right, but we acted nothing like the below video.

Well,..I'm an old bird (lterally). But I do love good music. Here's just a little of my "likes" that I still love to listen to every-so-often (not necessarily in any particular order.....)

Janis Joplin (most all her albums and singles...some on the original cassette tapes!)
Joan Baez (again,...most all albums and singles from over the years).
CCR --(think I got them all......most on the original casette tapes..)
Fleetwood Mac (yep,...I'm sure I got them all)
Hank Williams Sr. (most ALL his singles of yore).
Bill Monroe --(& Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs)
EmmyLou Harris
Bavarian Yodeling Music
Glenn Miller ("In the Mood"--"And The Angels Sing",...and more)
Irish and Scottish folk music
Early Mountan Folk music
Early Black Jazz (1920's & 30's)
Mammas and the Pappas
ABBA (yeah,...I'm sure I got all the singles!
Queen
Ace of Base
Melanie Safka
Bob Dylan

Broadway Music:
Cats
Evita
Phantom of the Opera
Les Miserables (sp?) "One More Day"--"Bring Him Home" ..(brings tears to my eyes).
Classical:
Dvoak --"New World Symphony"
and many,..many,...many more.
Operas:
Aida (the Victory march of Radames, especially). --gives me goosebumps!
Tales of Hoffman --"I hear a Spirit Calling"
and many,...many,...many more.

...that's just a tiny list, mind you. :heeheehee

You are not alone in this. I figure what good are our consecrations if they were always easy? I got a thing for 90s grunge style music even though I don't relate to any of the message any more, just brings back lots of memories and strong emotions. I avoid it because of the emotional pull and lyrics calling my attention away from the work Christ has done in my life. May God help us be so close to Him, that we find worldliness repulsive.

Music. *sigh* I was asked why I don't learn an instrument. My answer is, because I'll use it for evil.

Anyway. These are some of the constants.

Bon Jovi
U2
3 doors down
Fleetwood Mac
GGD
Rod Stewart
Phil Collins
Rise Against

On the commute I am constantly surfing stations. Lately I have been listening to Reggaeton. I am not sure why. There's something that I feel and I am not sure what it is.

I can't listen to much of U2 without feeling drunk.

I'm learning the recorder currently. I don't plan to use it for evil but I can pretty much rock it when I'm feeling carnal. Working on a sweet solo right now.

Heck, I listen to pretty much nothing but secular music. Unfortunately, Christian music has turned into nothign but generic "worship" songs that are nothing more than some talentless hack writer stringing together the same adjectives to describe God in a slightly different rhythm than the last song they released. I can't stand 99% of it.

I've been to some Trinitarian churches, the same God was there as in the Oneness churches. Hmmmmmm... My Mom's best friend was AOG, had the same Holy Ghost, spoke in tongues. Many loving Godhead debates, but no condemnation to each other.
