Your proposal story?

I'm trying to keep my mind off the terror of the day. I thought of this while reading PraiseHymn's thread about a proposal, how to propose, and what would make a memorable proposal gift, wouldn't it be nice to hear other's proposal stories?

So, would you be willing to share your proposal story?

Was it romantic, frantic, or traumatic? :D :jolly

:bells Bells are ringing... do tell your proposal story for us all :christmasjig

Re: Your proposal story?

OK, here's mine...

My sister and I were playing Skip-Bo with the "man of my dreams"... Quite a few young people had been over at our house playing games, and the party had dwindled down to my sister, I, and him ;) Word had been going around that he liked someone, and in fact my sister believed that he liked her. So she was determined to pull the story out of him, and kept pestering him ... who do you like... are you going to ask her out... etc. etc. My sister actually liked him, and was hoping he'd eventually ask her out. She was quite persistent, and not a little more than a flirt... myself, I was shy, and couldn't believe how she was acting... because I liked him too... a lot!

Finally, after quite a bit of pestering from my sister, he lifted his head, turned and looked me in the eye, and said... "It's you I like, and would you go out with me?" Of course, I said YES! My sister got up in a huff and left him and I sitting at the table together.... and then he said to me... "You're the one I've been waiting for all my life." And at that moment, both of us knew we would be spending our lifetime together, and six months later we were married... I never really got a true knee on the ground proposal, we both just knew it from the moment we first looked each other in the eye, that we were meant to be together forever.

There... so that's my story... I'd love to hear yours... or a special one from someone you know!

Re: Your proposal story?

Walt and I had dated for 3 years. One evening, we were laying on the floor watching tv (NO we were not "doing anything". Just laying there watching tv - very innocent!). A commercial came on and we started talking. During the conversation, Walt says, "You know, everybody assumes we're probably going to get married eventually. What do you think? Should we prove them right?" I answered, "Ya, I guess we could" and then the show came back on. End of conversation.

The next day, Walt called and said, "So did you really agree to marry me last night?" When I said I had, he whooped and hollered. Then calmed down and we set a date. This was in January. We set the date for Sept. 21st. Longest 9 months of my entire life!!!

Hmm.....let's see. The pastor asked my then boyfriend if we were married and he said no, which was the wrong answer since we were living together. We thought that might be wrong, but we were not sure. We wanted to get baptized but the pastor told us we had to get married and then he would baptize us. So, I guess the pastor proposed for both of us. Not real romantic. I actually already had a ring, but there was no real talk of marriage before that. We were just kids and where we came from, having a ring meant you were serious, and would probably get married at some point, but we had not really discussed it. It was just a cheapy ring. Cubic zirconia.

Took my sweetheart to the church building we both attend on a Friday night. It was dim lighting. Walked w her down the aisle while talking, to directly in front of the pulpit, took a knee, and asked her. She said yes, and then I heard teenage giggles in the balcony. Thot we were alone....

1.5 yrs later, we walked down that same aisle. Looking back, I'd like to have Thot of something much more creative...oh well. 10 years now

I met my husband at a friend's house where we were both invited for Easter dinner. He recited poetry and Shakepeare to impress me, haha. (He is an Electrical Engineer btw)
When I left to go to my car he followed me out and asked me if he could see me again.

He proposed on the first date and I said no, I didn't know him. He proposed just about everytime I saw him afterwards. Eventually I got to know him and realized he was a great person, very kind, well educated and interesting. He has encouraged and helped me to fulfill many of my dreams. And I have been them for him, supporting Him in every way I can.

This is not to say the road isn't rocky as we have some differances that make it so. I'm very frugal, he loves to spend. I like the house uncluttered, he is a collector. I'm an introvert who likes alone time, he is an extrovert who wants to be social all the time.

So at times our life is fraught with petty quarrels but not often major ones, and we are building a good life together the best we can.

Re: Your proposal story?

Met my husband to be at church - BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD to meet someone. I had been to a revival about 25 miles away and had seen a young man there who was shouting and praising God and I looked at my relative who was with me and said, See that young man up there, now he is too young for me but I want one like that one - who loved the Lord. (later I found out he was only 6 months younger that I). Months later I went to the church he attended (didn't know it of course) and on our first date, we got to talking about revivals we had attended and he mentioned the one that I had attended and to make a long story short, I realized he was the young man who I had seen shouting and praising God. After about a couple of months, he told me that in 2 weeks he was going to ask me to marry him and to think about it so at a
Greyhound bus station he proposed and gave me a white Bible as an engagement gift. The church we went to didn't believe in rings other than the wedding ring (stupid yes) but that was the way it was. WE only dated about 5 months and got married and it has been almost 46 yrs. STILL SHOUTING AND PRAISING GOD!!!

Yes, at the time I just thought the pastor was being spiritual and helping us understand the Bible. I don't really begrudge it too much. He was kind of between a rock and a hard place, I suppose, my husband asking to be baptized and all. I wasn't asking to be baptized because I had already been baptized in the titles. The pastor more or less told me I was going to be rebaptized when my husband was baptized. He just said "We may as well baptize you too." I had no idea why or what he was talking about, I just went with the flow.

So, anyway, there was pressure on us to get married and we kind of looked at each other and shrugged and got married. No relatives were present. I do wish it had been done differently but I never really regretted it either.

We've been married 26 years. We're gettin' old as the hills. ;)

Ha... oh she got over it just fine... she just moved on to the next available boy... she enjoyed the chase more than anything else....

Funny store about my sister is this... a year or so after my husband and I married, my sister met this boy who had red... well orange hair.. he absolutely adored her, and chased her around like a lost puppy with his tongue hanging out. She was so mean to him, and she said she would NEVER marry someone with red hair, and definitely would never marry him.

However, she liked fancy cars. So, when he found out this helpful information, he somehow went out and bought a fancy Corvette, thinking it would impress her.... and it wasn't long until she was riding around with him in this fancy car, and next thing I knew they were engaged.... lol.

So, I guess for her (because the church did not approve of wedding rings) her proposal gift was a Corvette....

Our family still laughs about this story, and my sister hates us bringing it up, but.... tis true, and she knows it, and it is just a hoot to think about how she ended up marrying someone she said she NEVER would, even if he were the last man on earth...all because of a fancy blue Corvette... :christmasjig

And they are still happily married today, 16 years later.... :jolly

Wow! 26 years, that is awesome! I've seen sooo many people with all the fancy weddings, and an incredible amount of $$ spent to get married... and the marriage doesn't last, and then we hear the stories posted on this thread of simple proposals and marriages that are lasting to this day.... it lets me know that what makes a marriage work isn't the dollar amount spent in a proposal gift or a wedding ceremony, or a fancy honeymoon... but it depends on the commitment that was made ....

One thing I've learned in our years of marriage, is that love brought us together, but commitment to each other keeps us together. There are days when the "lovey dovey" feeling you felt in the beginning is nowhere to be found, but the commitment you made to each other stands, and so you see each other through the rough places and your commitment stands and holds the test of time.

Yes, commitment is what makes marriage work. Someone on this thread wrote about their differences (was it Amanah?) and I thought uh-huh! Yes, my husband and I are quite different in many respects, but if we were just alike that would get boring. LOL! My husband and I have definitely had our share of fights. But we've always loved each other. It seems too, in the last few years we've just sort of settled into a comfortable place. When we were younger, we fought more. When the marriage was younger, there was always this tension that is gone now. It is nice. It's like "okay, you are you and I am me. No more trying to change each other...":)

Re: Your proposal story?

Ok...I think mine will probably win for least romantic proposal...LOL

We'd only been dating about 6 months, and I just found out that after years of disappointment in my previous marriage, I was against all odds 7 weeks pregnant.

My health insurance didn't cover any maternity issues, and they wanted to do an ultrasound because of "advanced maternal age" (Pshaw...I was only 36).

So my husband got down on one knee and presented me with the ring we had just picked out and said "Michelle, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife and sharing my insurance benefits?"

To which I dramatically responded "Yes! Yes! A Thousand Times Yes!"

I threw the wedding together in 3 days, and we actually got married on Veteran's day. (I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere!).

We just celebrated our 2nd anniversary last month, and are a very happy little family. It certainly wasn't what I expected in this season of life, but of course now I can't imagine it any other way.

I never proposed to my wife. We met the first time, and without even seeing or feeling any fireworks we both knew we had found "the one" (of which there can be only one). A month or two later we suddenly were talking about getting married in the most matter-of-fact way possible without either of us even knowing who brought it up the first time.

A few months after that we were married at the MGM Grand in Vegas. :)

That is awesome Michelow! I love this! Sometimes happiness comes to us in a package that at first we don't recognize... maybe the wrapping isn't as pretty as we would have liked, but once we have opened it... it is the best gift imaginable. I kinda think maybe that is true with your proposal :)
