Watch Night Services?
So anyone attending any watch night services tonight?
This is one tradition of my child hood I love. We were always in church on New Year's eve, many churches came together with tons of singing, 3 or 4 preachers, and a great time of fellowship and church. We would start about 8pm, and go all night without a break, praying out the old year, in the new year, and dismissing about 12:30 or so in the morning. In recent years, seems that it's become almost impossible for me to find churches that still have Watch Night Services. I'll be ministering in one in Cookeville, TN tonight, but as I've asked many pastors, these services now seem to be far and few between. So, anyone going to a service tonight? Ever attend one? Any great Watch Night Service memories? |
Re: Watch Night Services?
Not me. Have not attended a church that had a watch night service for many years. When I lived in Texas we used to have them there but at some point it became a safety matter. We lived in an urban area and there were so many drunk drivers out at the same time church families were driving home that the pastor discontinued the practice.

Re: Watch Night Services?
That's why some said they won't be coming tonight.... I'll be driving over an hour home back into Nashville, so I'm sure I'll pass some that shouldn't be on the road... but going to go anyway and take the chances. If it's my time it's my time. They are some of the best services I've ever been in. There are about 3 churches coming together for this service tonight.

Re: Watch Night Services?
We are having an area youth rally I would not be shocked if it was after midnight when we get through with everything.

Re: Watch Night Services?
Praise the Lord.... being taught at a young age that church was a great place to be on New Year's Eve has been something that stuck with me all my years.... even when I backslid and turned my back on God..... I never imagined going to a bar or club on New Year's Eve..... If I wasn't gonna be in church I was no where....

We had Communion and foot washing last night. Brother OC Marlor spoke afterward. He was with us Sunday as well.

Re: Watch Night Services?
OK, I'm sure this will not surprise anyone, but, for me, as a kid, watchnight services were horrible! Pure torture. Dullest night of the whole year!
Later, in youth (and Campus Life), it wasn't so bad. No, the watchnight services didn't get better or more bearable. We just didn't go! Had our own New Years Eve events. Fun, games. And yes, some singing and some praying... but not hours on end! And when 12 stuck, guess what. We all got to yell "Happy New Year"! Try that at a watchnight service and see what happens. :heeheehee |

Re: Watch Night Services?
We had an amazing service. It was great to have these churches come together for fellowship, I always like it better when multiple churches come together for the Watch Night Service... it makes it so much better and really helps build fellowship.
To the posters earlier talking about it being boring in their youth, maybe it was just the order of service you had... cause the youth were the most excited there Monday night. The teenagers and college age outnumbered the adults 2 to 1, and they took the majority of the service with music, drama, sign teams etc.... they had practiced and were so annointed. And they were the ones the really responded to the message the most. As a matter of fact, we broke about 10pm for a break and refreshments, and as the adults were sitting around visiting, it was the teen agers saying, hey, let's get back to the sanctuary and start again.... To the person that asked about foot washing, our fellowship of churches absolutely do observe the Lord's Supper and foot washing as ordinances of the church, but we only do that the week of Easter, not at New Years. But it was a mighty, mighty wonderful move of God. Two reported being delivered, and 3 filled with the Holy Ghost..... and we dismissed about 12:40am. |
Re: Watch Night Services?
On second thought I do "watch night services" sometimes. Every once in awhile I watch the Sunday night service that is webcast from POA.

We had service. 5 baptized in Jesus name that night. 1 filled with the Holy Ghost. The word was awesome. Each minister had three minutes each to preach a small message. God surely blessed.
