Washing Machines

Do you like your washer and would you recommend?

If, so what kind do you have, brand, top or front loader?

I have read so many conflicting reviews I have decided to come to people I sorta know for your experiences.

Read a lot of negative reviews about front loaders growing mold.

It's one of those low water, no agitator types.

About 3 or 4 years ago caught an unbelievable sale at Best Buy and got a fancy front load LG washer and dryer. Paid about $600 for both. Such a great deal I bought the extended warranty I usually pass on since it has computer controls on both.

2 Top loaders but wish we had good front loaders.

We have a front loader and love it. You do have to be the HE detergent but that isn't a big deal. We do only use about half the recommended amount and, surprise surprise, the cloths and sheets come out just as clean as if we used the whole amount. LOL

Front load washers use about 1/2 or 1/3 as much water as a top load. They are much more effecient.

Salesman told me you only need two tablespoons.

Do you mind saying what brand you have and if you would recommend?

That seems to be the consensus, but also takes a LOT longer to wash.

Re: Washing Machines

If you haven't priced any in a while get ready for sticker shock!

About a thousand dollars one washer only if front loader with pedestal.

Esther 01-29-2013 10:17 PM

Re: Washing Machines

Also, the new top loaders are very deep and most do not have an agitator, not sure how they will come clean?

Don't like the concern of mold in a front loader either.

Decisions. Must buy something tomorrow.

It is pretty cool to listen to the computer control unit working though. It tells how big the load is by weight then spins a little, squirts water a little, spins some more, squirts some more, rests, spins, squirts, squirts, spins. You get the picture!

We bought an LG washer and dryer combo from Best buy for about a grand (four years ago). They were really well rated by Consumer Reports.

There is a new feature that has steam in some of the front loaders. Seems like a really nice feature.

Our top loader has no agitator, cleans great and doesn't use much water at all. Very energy efficient.

The LG with the size I am trying to stay with comparable to my top
Loader with a pedestal is a little over 1,000.00.

Machine is like 800.00+. Then the pedestal is around 250.00 then taxes some places delivery charge and wow over a 1,000 for just a washer.

If you want color add another 100+

I went looking to get a top loader, but tubs are way to deep.

That is about when I bought my LG's at BB! So you know the $600 I paid for both was a bargain. Now granted that price is without the pedestals but it was with the hardware to stack them which we did. Makes the dryer right at the perfect level to load without bending over.

Do your washer and dryers play the little tune when they are done? :)

But...if you are a prepper, you won't be able to use the special detergent.

I make my own laundry soap for less than $2 a gallon. :D

Do you have to drain yours each time you use it?

Who says were not stock piling? And if we have to manually wash our cloths in a 5 gallon bucket, a tablespoon of detergent goes a LONGGGG way.

I don't like having to buy a more expensive brand. Plus I just open a brand new box from SAMs and used one washing of it before it crashed. :bigbaby

My wife made our own laundry soap for about a year. Then the novelty wore off and we are back to using Gain. LOL

No. I don't think we ever drain it. We do use the special cycle for cleaning it.

Maybe it is the newer models you have to drain.

I like Gain det as well, is it HE qualified or is that a later model requirement as well?

I can see that happening. But as least she will know how to make it if ever needed again.

Hi Esther,
Surprise, we have a Kenmore low agitation, low water model that we got in Nov 2011!
It only had 1 year warranty on it & this week, it is starting to sound like a 70 year old woman going up the stairs with grunts & groans when we wash the clothes!
No wonder Sears is going belly up!:foottap

Yeah. Ours has an "express" setting that I use often. Love it.

Top loader?

Re: Washing Machines

We had a front loader--which I really liked at first--but we had lots of issues with it. Whirlpool finally replaced it for us and we bought a high-efficiency top loader instead. I like my new washer a lot better.

The Issues:
The front loader got stopped up easily, and we couldn't unstop it ourselves; the repair guy had to come out to do it. Also, if I forgot to put delicates on the "delicate" cycle, it would rip soft t-shirts or fine fabrics. (By sucking the fabric into the holes in the drum, where presumably the inside of the holes weren't completely de-burred.) Whirlpool thought this was unique to our washer, so they were discussing replacing it for that reason. The washer tore up a total of 8-10 items of clothing over the course of a year. Finally, the bearings went out in the drum so Whirlpool actually replaced it at that point. We may have gotten a lemon, because I read a lot of great reviews before I decided to buy my front loader.

Overall, I like the IDEA of a front loader, but my top loader is a lot more hassle free. It's also highly efficient and it holds a LOT of clothes at one time. It might still take longer to wash than an old machine, but it's washing the equivalent of at least a double load.

A setting that I love on the newer washers (had this on my front-loader, too) is the "sanitize" or "clean boost." GREAT for sanitizing bedding or towels after someone has been sick or just making sure the towels are super clean. :)

P.S. My husband did buy the extended warranties on the washer/dryer, and they have been worth their weight in gold.

Yes, when it cleans, it cleans great. It just makes a lot of racket when it is running now & we need Sears to come by a fix it!

We leave the door open for several hours after using it. Not as convenient to do that with a front loader than a top loader (the door gets in the way), but not a big deal.

I'm with you.

I just bit the bullet and bought the LG front loader and dryer. I hope we made the right decision.

The industry has changed a lot and not all of it for the better in my opinion.

I think you'll be happy with it. Just make SURE to be High Efficiency (HE) detergent! If you don't you'll walk into the room a half an hour after you start a load to find a couple hundred cubic feed of suds. LOL

I think you will love it. The only thing I can think of that might be considered a negative is that sometimes the washer door window is kind of wet after washing a load so we either leave it open to dry off or just wipe it off.
