Wow. What was she thinking?

Just when I think I've seen it all, something like this happens...

I was sitting here thinking how this would affect me if a pastor I sat under pulled this kind of stunt.

Yeah, she doesn't seem to have a servants heart. I don't think this is the first time she has done this.

Re: Wow. What was she thinking?

The pastor called it a "lapse in my character and judgment" that "has been blown out of proportion." Somewhat an ironic statement coming from someone who ordered Applebee's to fire everyone who came into contact with the receipt.

Wow...if that is the case why get the girl fired?

Yeah, I think she is sorry she got caught.

You guys have to admit (and it has been mentioned on AFF before) that Pentecostals are famous for being lousy tippers. I wonder why that is. It was true of a lot (not all) AofG folks, back in the day. Very embarrassing.

If I was on the Board of that particular Baptist Church she wouldn't be pastoring MY Baptist Church for much longer. Maybe MINUTES!

If you don't love people enough to treat a waitress better than this, you have no business claiming to be a servant of God. And most certainly NOT a pastor!

Such is the digital age we live in... simple silly things that typically would not get a moment's notice are spreading over the world in minutes....

Here is one of the comments that a reader of the article left that I found interesting.
Quote:

I waited tables in Lynchburg, Virginia, home of Jerry Falwell (when he was alive), Liberty University and tons of Southern Baptist churches. The waitstaff used to constantly get Bible tracts instead of tips. It was like, "wow, good thing my landlord is accepting annoying bits of scripture this month in lieu of actual money."

This is always - ALWAYS - cheapness masquerading as piety. And the thing is, the people who pull this stunt, on some level, KNOW that this is the case. If there wasn't some degree of self-awareness attached to pulling that kind of ...hole move, then people like Pastor Bell wouldn't get upset when someone other than the waitress they intended to shaft knows about their "tipping" habits.

Why do you think it silly? I don't find it silly at all. Very sad actually. As I stated earlier, I wonder how I would react if this had been my pastor.

Maybe. Some denominations are probably better than others, though.

Re: Wow. What was she thinking?

Most people do not realize how little a server in a restaurant receives.

In this region, the servers receive $2.30/hour. They work hard to please restaurant patrons.

My heart broke for my youngest son when he was trying to earn money at a Ruby Tuesdays restaurant before he started college. He worked 7 hours one saturday and he took home only $34, including tips for the entire day. That is $4.86 an hour. Slave wages. He was so discouraged because he worked during the time when gasoline first went up to $4 a gallon. He would arrive at work and they would send servers home 2 hours later. That meant he spent more on gasoline to get there and home than he earned.

There are plenty of people who tip only a dollar or two after a large meal and worse that there are many who leave nothing.

I hate to say it but black congregations have a HORRIBLE reputation for not leaving tips in this area. Doesn't matter the denomination.

There is a reason for that and the phenomenon is not limited to your area. I've seen it with my own eyes, everywhere I've lived here in America.

Re: Wow. What was she thinking?

Seriously, if the 18% tip is already incorporated into the bill, there isn't a reason to tip the person any more.

The snide remark was stupid and rude.

So do white congregations....it doesn't matter the race- cads are cads.

I have 2 friends who make their living in the service industry. One is a waiter, the other a hair dresser. They both are HUGE tippers.

MissBrattified 02-01-2013 06:36 AM

Re: Wow. What was she thinking?

She was basically complaining about anything over 10%. :foottap

I realize that tips are supposed to reflect the level of service, but when someone who is obviously Christian is at the table, it's important to remember that we are reflecting Christ. (or not) I can't STAND to eat with people who are rude to their waiters/waitresses and who are bad tippers. I don't care if the waitress doesn't keep the water glass filled; be patient and be kind. Ask for more water--nicely.

The problem wasn't that she was protesting any additional tip...if you look at the receipt, she crossed out the automatic 18%. She didn't want to give ANY tip.

Before I got married, my wife worked as a waitress and HATED when church groups came in. Didn't matter the denomination...they all were cheap and didn't leave tips.

This Pastor says she embarrassed her church...well, yah. And by not just leaving well enough alone and demanding the whole staff be fired, she made a bad situation worse. She shouldn't be a Pastor with that attitude. Although, with the way many Pastors are today, she's perfect for the position. I'm surprised she didn't have someone else pay for her meal or try to have it written off.

Let's not bring race or religion into it. It's a despicable act. That's basically it.

Oh, I know. A few of them are inlaws.

The other group who are notorious bad tippers are the older retired people living around us. They are the ones who will spend 15-20 bucks for a meal for two and leave a buck tip.

Had an aunt like that, except a buck would be way too much! Always embarrassed my uncle. (And my folks when they ate together. My dad always sneaked back in to leave a real tip! :lol)

My father in law, although getting slightly better, is like that. He ALWAYS picks up any restaurant check and will get angry if you try to pay the bill. So we will often go out and the total check will come to 50-80 bucks (for 4 or 5) and he will leave a two dollar tip -and will get angry if you try to throw a few more dollars on the table since he considers the tip part of the total bill (which he of course is paying).

He is also the one who insists on praying long and loud while holding hands whenever we would go out to eat. I put a stop to the holding hands part which didn't go over well but I really had to put my foot down on that one.

This is the whole point of the conversation. She made the point that she is a pastor by writing the word "Pastor" on the receipt, and then she mentioned tithing.

Race--I'm with you. Religion? She made religion a part of it in her note. "I give God 10%; why do you get 18?"

A despicable act is worse when God's name is used as an excuse for it.

18% is my baseline tip...usually more. And although I have seen Apostolics that are lousy tippers...and lousy customers, I doubt that it is any more than any other demographic.

Re: Wow. What was she thinking?

I double the taxes for my tip. Our tax is 9.75% so it works out perfectly and I don't have to sit there and figure anything out.

Wonder what percentage this pastor gets from her church? Bet it's more than 10%.

I am thinking someone is going to investigate that Pastor personally and professionally. Maybe the IRS.

in an interesting twist, the waitress who posted this on line has been fired. She wasnt the waitress who served the people but was offended enough to post it.

See how nothing good comes from being an idiot and using God to do it?
