Words we used to use.....
 

Have we ever done this here on AFF? I can't remember for sure.......

Anyhow, a friend and I were talking one day about words that were used all the time when we were kids, but our kids today wouldn't have any idea what in the world they mean today. They've gone "out of style". I asked people to name some of those words on Facebook and that thread went on and on and on...............

So let me give you some examples -
How about davenport? Does anyone say that anymore?
or Pocketbook?

at bedtime, my dad used to tell us it was time to "hit the hay". Wonder if anyone says that anymore?

If we misbehaved, he'd tell us to go get his razor strap. Never used it even one time. But that's what he'd tell us to do. I'm not sure kids today would even know that a razor strap would have been used for - and I'm not talking about beating kids!

hey! not to change the subject or anything, but I see up in the right corner of each of your posts that it tells how many times you were thanked in how many posts. You all have at least BEEN thanked! I guess I should be nicer, eh? Now I'm bummed. :(

Did you have to go get your own switch? I did, and I knew better than to get one without substance. Both my mom and my grandma had willow trees in the front yard. :nod

If my grandma corrected you, you knew it! She believed that God designed a kid with a correction spot right on their seat.

But correction by my mom was twice as bad even tho she never, ever spanked any of us. Ok, I take that back, she spanked me twice in my entire life. But she could lecture better than anyone you've ever known. And by the time she was done, you felt about as big as an ant. You were begging her to forgive you because you knew how wrong you had been and what it was that you had done that was soooooo wrong that it broke her heart!

I got mine yanked a few times....especially
if I sat in front of her in church and didn't

I really was a tender hearted child, but I go into trouble so much. My Mama would "tear you up" as the saying goes, though.
Our Pastor didn't lecture you, but he was so humble and loving you just didn't want him to have to correct you.

I've heard old timers when they're aggravated say "I'll swanee". Doesn't make sense to me, but that was a favorite expression of my parents and grandparents.

It was instead of "I swear" which was considered swearing and a sin.

My Mama also did not allow "by words". Words that replaced swear words.

Ouch, my Mama was a pincher. And if you got in trouble at church, you KNEW when you got home you would get in TROUBLE!!!!

My daddy has Alzheimer's. The other day I went over to the house and on a pad was written, in big letters, the word DENTURES. I asked my brother about it. Turns out dad, who wears dentures, couldn't remember the name of them and was calling them his "plate." Both my brother and I are old enough to remember what a partial plate was, but I suspect young people don't.

My grandpa called the couch the divan. Haven't heard that in a long time.

Our late pastor-Dad would say that many today do not take the time to discipline their children. He said, "How many of our children even know what a "switch" is!
A little girl about 7 or 8 yrs old held up her hand! "Debbie, do you know what a switch is? "Yes" she replied knowingly! "It's what you turn the light on with"!:lol
