Did your pastor ever.........

I am reading a book written by a good friend of mine who is a former Apostolic missionary. It is the story of his life. REALLY good book!!

One of the things I noticed today when reading it tho stunned me. He was talking about when he first got saved. this would have been back in the 1950's. He mentioned in the book when talking about his first pastor, that he kept a list posted on the bulletin board at the church of who had paid their tithes that week and who had not. I almost dropped the book when I read that! Seriously?? He did NOT say this as a criticism of his former pastor. He was just telling us the story of his life. But I was blown away by it. That's over-the-top!

I've told you all before that in my time in the Apostolic church, I had a total of 5 pastors. And of those 5, 4 were absolutely wonderful Men of God. (ok, so I had one very bad pastor - after what I've read here, I'd say that's a pretty good record :) ) One of my first pastors is the man who wrote this book. I'm sooooooo glad he didn't learn from HIS pastor how to do things. LOL!! He was strict, no doubt about that. But he never did something so unbelievable as to post a list of who paid their tithes or not. Thank goodness!!

And just so you know - this man really was a great pastor. Especially for a young teenage girl who had a rebellious streak a mile wide. LOL We are still good friends. I have the very highest respect for him and his sweet wife even after all these years.

Just to be fair and let you know that this doesn't happen ONLY in the Apostolic Churches ---- my sister was attending a local Nazarene Church. Last year the church treasurer was passing out the envelopes with people's giving receipts in January so they could all do their taxes. She (the treasurer) got up in the service to announce that she had a few envelopes that she hadn't yet passed out. And then said, "If you didn't get yours, come and see me. If I don't have one for you, then shame on you. Hopefully this year you will do better at giving to the church like you should." My BIL looked at my sister and said, "We're done here. We will not be back". Now he won't go anywhere. She's going to a different church.

Some of us get paid biweekly or monthly. If we're inclined to pay tithing, would we have to split it up into chunks to make the list every week?

Good question. And how would they know if you had actually paid the whole tithe or not? maybe you gave generously, but it wasn't really the full tithe amount? did you make the list or not???

Wonder if the pastor's name was on list.

I've heard of that, but not personally experienced it. Had some other weird experiences regarding tithing, though :)

The RCC I grew up in posted names and how much money they gave each week in the weekly bulletin.

It started with the name of the one who gave the most and ended with the name of the one who only gave a dollar or two.

The lady was out of line but it sounds like your BIL had more issues going on.

The church may have had more things going on, not the BIL. Sounds like money was QUITE important there.

I agree. I don't think that my BIL is the one who had the issues. He was a brand new church goer - not even a Christian at that point. And they were givers to the church - good givers! But because he hated the fact that if he filled out an envelope, everyone would know "his business", he refused to do that. He just dropped the cash in each week.

I've heard of some pretty wild stuff go on, but never heard of this. I know you are thankful that your pastor didn't carry on that practice!

That would be a fun church to go to, if only for a few weeks and enough time to write them a check for 1,000,000,000 (one billion dollars) and see if they are ignorant enough (I bet they are) to try and deposit it.

You are definitely right about that one, KBTW!! I loved my former pastor. We didn't always agree, but I knew without a doubt that he loved my soul and was only looking out for my best :)

Margie, I think that was kind of common in a lot of different kinds of churches back then.

I know of baptist churches that did something along those lines. my home church back then didnt post who paid their tithes, but they did post what the pastor made and how much the offering was etc.
