Cypriots rushed to pull their money out of banks and ATMs before the tiny Mediterranean nation’s government could finalize a plan to seize depositors’ funds to satisfy euro zone leaders, sparking a run that prompted banks to be closed until at least Thursday.

The island nation’s leaders were huddling to come up with a way to soften the blow on average depositors, with one proposal targeting accounts with deposits above $130,000. These are not liberal policies. These are policies designed to keep the banks propped up at the expense of the depositors. The Cypriots are right to be up in arms. The banks should have to pay out because it was the banks that got them in this mess, not the individual savers. It should be obvious that bailing out banks is not a true liberal position (and I'll remind people that our own bailout took place during the Bush administration, not under Obama. )

As it is, the Cypriots have expressed their opinion to the point that the banks are now closed until Thursday at the earliest and the haircut is being revised.

As I understand it, in secret meetings in the great USA, there are written plans to take individual IRA and 401k's and seize them and divide them equally so all retirees have equal funds............so yes, it could happen here!!! :foottap

Sure, the government might get the brain dead idea to seize funds, but it would be so socially disruptive (as in people would riot) that it wouldn't happen. It's worth reminding people that it would not take a government confiscation to cause your 401K to dwindle to nothing; all that's needed is a failure of the market the underlying securities are invested in. The only thing that is absolutely guaranteed is your bank deposits up to $250K (by the FDIC) everything else, not so much. So yeah it could happen here but it doesn't require government intervention, just a failure of the market as occurred in 1929.
