I was in my bosses office one day discussing issues with a large customer of ours. I said "The real problem is their process engineers- you know engineers, they are all anal retentive" At which point my boss pointed to the wall beside the chair I was sitting in. On that wall was his engineering degree. LOL

mainly it makes me image a butt, and things associated with butts. it ignores that

Based on the definition of anal I would say that it is not for polite company, although it is widely used at this point in time... Of course so is the 'f' word.

He's not a process engineer. They don't have self-esteem problems and need to hang their degree on the wall.

Who would want to use that part of the body in a conversation the way the term's been used? Lol

My old youth leader told me once about a trip he took to Canada. While there, he used a common phrase (for him), jokingly calling people a "bum". Well, he got a lot of strange looks from people. One of them finally took him aside and informed him that the word 'bum' in that usage was analogous to using the word a**, at least in that region.

Any word can be offensive (bloody is an offensive word in England, for example), it just depends on how you use it. Though there are some fairly universal words that are considered derogatory and profane.

Also, talk about your thread necros. Why was this thread resurrected 4 1/2 years later?

It depends on how you use it. If said in a derogatory manner to belittle someone, then I would say it was bad.
