I Die Daily

I have always heard the scripture in I Cor 15:31 where Paul said I die daily to be referring to him speaking about repentance. But unless I am missing that scripture I am not finding it. The verses preceding that one is talking about baptizing for the dead.

I am wondering if this is another "scripture" that doesn't exist, like "cleanlyness is next go Godliness" or "there will be stars in my crown". Just never have found those scriptures. Although I did find one "close" to the stars in your crown.

Does anyone know what scripture this teaching may have been referring to?

Yes that is the same scripture I quoted, however, he was not talking about repentance.

I am looking for the scripture I heard taught where Paul said I die daily talking about repentance.

Anyone know what scripture they were referring to?

Re: I Die Daily

Peopel would say it is inferred. What else could Paul mean by his dying daily? Since repentance equates to death in the death-burial-resurrection symbolism, they insert repentance into that verse.

I do not know for sure that Paul intended it that way.

He is not talking about repentance. I have never even heard anyone say that. He is talking about taking up the cross and denying himself daily for the cause of Christ.

that was it. They believe it means Paul was saying he died to self on a daily basis

Died to self in what way? Repentance? Sin?

Instead of listening to Rush Limbaugh he spent the time in prayer. Instead of eating on Saturday he fasted. Instead of going with some friends to play baseball he went and passed out tracts.

The things you deny self are not always going to be sinful in themselves. Its just if you don't deny yourself OTHER THINGS you wont have any time left for Christ.

He was talking about his life in danger because he preached the gospel.

That is what I got out of it also.

Re: I Die Daily

I believe that Paul meant that he died daily in the sense of crucifying self. Not repentance, not religious actions (prayer, fasting, meditation, etc.) but rather a denial of ego, self, personal identity, identifying himself only in Christ Jesus. Allowing himself to be a living extention of Jesus.

Galatians 2:19-20
King James Version (KJV)
19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.
20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
He reckoned himself, by faith, to be crucified with Christ, and yet alive. However, not as himself, but as Christ... who lived within him.

We too are called to die daily by taking up our cross... and following Jesus. Reckoning our "self" our "ego" to be crucified with Jesus. Allowing ourselves to be living conduits of Christ's identity, reality, and power.

Re: I Die Daily

Some commentaries say it's a figure of speech

Clarke
I die daily - A form of speech for, I am continually exposed to death. The following passages will illustrate this. So Philo, p. 990. Flaccus, who was in continual fear of death, says: καθ’ ἑκαστην ἡμεραν, μαλλον δε ὡραν, προαποθνησκω, πολλους θανατους ὑπομενων ανθ’ ἑνος του τελευταιου· “Every day, rather every hour, I anticipate death; enduring many deaths before that last one comes.” So Libanius, speaking of his own miseries and those of the people of Antioch, Epist. 1320, page 615, says: ετι ζωντες τεθνηκαμεν· “Though living, we are dead.” Livy has a similar form of expression to signify continual danger, xxix. 17: Quotidie capitur urbs nostra, quotidie diripitur. “Daily is our city taken, daily is it pillaged.”

Barnes
I die daily - compare Rom_8:36. I endure so many sufferings and persecutions, that it may be said to be a daily dying. I am constantly in danger of my life; and my sufferings each day are equal to the pains of death. Probably Paul here referred particularly to the perils and trials which he then endured at Ephesus; and his object was to impress their minds with the firmness of his belief in the certainty of the resurrection, on account of which he suffered so much, and to show them that all their hopes rested also on this doctrine.

JFB
I die daily--This ought to stand first in the sentence, as it is so put prominently forward in the Greek. I am day by day in sight of death, exposed to it, and expecting it (2Co_4:11-12; 2Co_1:8-9; 2Co_11:23).

The idea of "dying to self" though is taught
Rom 6:6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.

Eph 4:22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,

Col 3:9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices

Mat 16:24 Then Jesus told his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

Re: I Die Daily

On the other hand "I die" is in the active voice meaning Paul is the doer of the action

Some feel he was using a hyperbole to exaggerate his sufferings

Re: I Die Daily

30 And why stand we in jeopardy every hour?

31 I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.

32 If after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantageth it me, if the dead rise not? let us eat and drink; for to morrow we die.

When read in the context of the preceeding verse and the verse directly after the scripture in question it becomes clear that paul is not speaking in a spiritual sense but rather that he is pointing to the fact that he as a christian was laying his life on the line and willing to give up his life everyday. Another passage that brings this out is:

Romans 8:36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

I used to believ that the passage in question taught that we were to die to flesh daily but when i began to look into that passage i saw that it did not support that thought process at all. Also why if i have died to my flesh why should i have to keep dying to it again and again every day? Does he resurrect every night while i sleep? I believe that it is more Biblical to say that you die to flesh once then by living a life of obedience the flesh is kept dead.

Re: I Die Daily

Yeshua said:

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, and whoever will lose his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his life? Or what will a man give in exchange for his life? 27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will render to everyone according to his deeds. Matt. 16:24-27

Yes the head of the Church himself taught we must deny ourselves. Of course this includes the threat of physical death but in no way is limited to it.

To lose our life in this world is denying ourselves the pleasures and associations of this life. It is identifying with Yeshua in keeping his teachings, fellowshipping him and his people.

If one does this he will find the life of Christ both now and forever.

Do we deny self DAILY?

23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily , and follow me. 24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. Luke 9:23

Luke records the word DAILY.

That's why Paul said I DIE DAILY.

Amazing what one sees when reading scripture in proper context of the versus proceeding and following. :)

Thanks for the good input.

I think you have all proved he was not talking about repentance.
