A Completely Home Grown Meal

1 Attachment(s)
I thought some of you might appreciate seeing our completely home-grown/harvested meal. Every once in a while, we have one (not too often, really) that is 100% home grown/harvested with the exception of a few condiments etc. From the left clockwise:

1. Raspberries/Blackberries
2. New Potatoes
3. Green Beans/Wax Beans
4. Fried Green Tomatoes with Garlic and Cilantro (the garlic and coconut oil it was cooked in and flour are NOT homegrown)
5. Venison Back-Strap from 2011

We ended up eating the berries on ice cream so the ice cream also was not homegrown. ;)

Wow, what an awesome meal!!! You have inspired me to see if I can accomplish the same soon... but probably minus the potatoes. I planted some potatoes kind of late, so I haven't even checked to see if they are ready yet or not. But, we have elk meat, green beans, peas, squash, and tomatoes ready now. My corn has also tasseled. Hoping to get an ear or too at least! My son has gone picking thimble berries, and blackberries up on the local mountain... would those count?

Thanks for the awesome inspiration - hope you enjoyed your homegrown meal :)

We tried making a 100% home grown and home raised meal once.

Unfortunately, this is the best we could do.

Last year, I wasn't able to make a garden, for the first time in a long time. This year I found if I limited myself to 1 hr. in the garden, at a time, I could do it.

So far we have had greens, beets, onions, green beans, fried grn tomatoes, ripe tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, squash and cucumbers,

Those pictures of dinners look delicious.

Maybe I can tackle gardening when I retire. I enjoy fresh veggies and it's nice to know from whence it came .

Awesome!

We eat many zero mile meals here but I never thought about taking pics of them... very cool! :)

Tonight we are having a chicken I butchered yesterday boiled with carrots and peas from our spring garden and egg noodles I rolled out and dried a couple months back. Maybe I'll get a pic!

My husband bought me a whole set of cast iron skillets for Christmas in our early years of marriage. That skillet is at least 25 years old! Well loved and well used!

A couple of days ago, I found a Chicken of the Woods mushroom. We have never had one before so tried a tiny portion first day. Wow! Was that good! We didn't get sick or die. ;) Now, I know these are great!

Here's a photo of my plum jelly! The lids aren't wiped off so in the photo you can see that. I am not a perfectionist (at least not a successful one). ;) Also, I have a mish-mash of jars from over the years. But here's the wild plum jelly I made yesterday. Yum!

I'm not your mom, and I'm sure you didn't read my second sentence. LOL!

Re: A Completely Home Grown Meal

So, how did you cook the wild mushroom? I went to the website and it says they grow in dead hardwood trees. We don't have much hardwood here, so I would think we probably don't have them here.

And the jelly.... oohhh! Looks wonderful! This will be a special gift for your Mom... so yummy! I've never tried to make wild plum jelly, but I was thinking about doing some Oregon grape jelly, as we have lots of Oregon grapes growing wild here.

I've got quite a few tomatoes that are starting to ripen... and hopefully I'll have enough soon to can... and I can't wait! Already enjoying juicy tomato, bacon and cheese sandwiches.... there is just NOTHING like a home grown tomato!!!!

ILG 08-19-2013 07:38 AM

Re: A Completely Home Grown Meal

I sliced the mushroom into thin slices and used coconut oil and sea salt and pepper. It was heavenly! There was too much to eat so then I made a chicken/mushroom gravy to put on some garden potatoes.

We also have wild grapes growing here that will be ripe in a couple days. I have thought about making jelly and fresh grape juice!

Last night I pick about 1/2 an ice cream bucket full of blackberries. I have tons of blackberries and raspberries in my freezer. This year has been the best since we moved here.

I have no ripe tomatoes yet. I agree that there is nothing like a home grown tomato!

Awesome! Looks great! My husband made some jalapeno jelly from our garden. I didn't taste it because it uses too much sugar, but he said it was great.

Last time I had a wild mushroom, it was in some tea. ;) :heeheehee

Not sure what you mean by that. Was it shrooms?

Only did that once, so I don't know what they called it other than, Mushroom Tea.

More wild plums for tomorrow's jelly making.

I have boatloads of raspberries and blackberries in the freezer this year. I am hoping to harvest some wild grapes down our road out here soon.

Tonight's dinner

Clockwise from top left:

Bass my husband caught when we were camping earlier this summer.

Mashed garden potatoes with skins and garlic.

Apple crisp made with apples from my Mother's tree.

Fiddleheads harvested this spring and frozen. (These are delicious!)
