Temporary Marriages for sex?

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran's hard-line interior minister is encouraging temporary marriages as a way to avoid extramarital sex, a stance many in this conservative country fear would instead encourage prostitution.

A temporary marriage, or "sigheh," refers to a Shiite Muslim tradition under which a man and a woman sign a contract that allows them to be "married" for any length of time, even a few hours. An exchange of money, as a sort of dowry, is often involved.

Although the practice exists, it's not very common in Iran, a Shiite majority nation where many consider it a license for prostitution. Others, however, have advocated institutionalizing the tradition, saying it would help fight "illicit" sex in a country where sexual relations outside marriage are banned under Islamic law.

"Temporary marriage is God's rule. We must aggressively encourage that," state-run television quoted Interior Minister Mostafa Pourmohammadi as saying.

Yeah, some people don't have affairs. They just practice serial monogamy. :haloplug

Some say USA...probably because of the divorce rate....

BUT...there was a trend where young people (Christians) were getting married privately (civil ceremony) and then living single lives...but while they were "dating" they could have "legal sex" because....they were "married."

Be interesting to know if these went on to stay in those marriages til death do part. I doubt it.

My younger brother did that! He was married six months before the wedding and both sets of parents STILL don't know it!

He's now been married for ten years, and two beautiful little girls. I'm the only one in the family that knows this secret. He slipped and told me while we were golfing last year!

One of the ones that I found out about (after the fact) was that the mother had some sneaky suspicion (mother's intuition) and went down to the courthouse and...viola....there was the marriage certificate. Well, she took a copy....confronted the two and said, "_____(son's name), I see that you are a married man now. You did not have the decency or respect to let me know. You are to be with your wife tonight and I expect back rent for the last 6 months in the sum of $1800." He was like...no fair and what am I supposed to do. The mother was...you made an adult decision on your own...you figure it out....but when you marry you leave your mother and your father and you are married and must leave.

They are still married.

That is the "motto." However, I think there is something really wrong with something like this...where it is done in "secret". It's almost living a lie to the rest of the world.

Do they have other options? Paul allowed it so people wouldn't fall into temptation and sin. Today, if a couple did this openly they would be scrutinized. You've been around long enough to know how judgmental (sp) the church can be.

It is definetely born of legalism.

Warped. Women in those countries who are raped are blamed too.

AKA...Las Vegas...30 day divorces, and serial monogamy. It doesn't matter what country you are in...women get blamed for everything. I still get incensed thinking about the sermon I heard from one of our very 'popular' speakers blaming a 16 year old girl's slit in her skirt for her being taken from the church foyer and raped. sick...that is what it is.

The whole idea that, "we can appear to be single to everyone else but in secret we were married so we can have sex and not go to hell" is legalistic.

Problem is, marriage is a public proclamation to God and man, as well as consumation. I question the validity of a marriage kept secret as much as one that is not consumated, or simply common law.

huh? How does this thread have anything to do with women being blamed? Is there a religious rule that makes getting married for a day ok under Judaism or Christianity in this country just for the purpose of having sex? Do they reall do that in Vegas just to have sex? I was not aware people in this country did that and then got divorced after having sex for a day...as part of their religion

berkeley 06-05-2007 12:56 AM

I've heard of people getting married so they wouldn't burn!!! Paul addressed it in a line or two... but I've never heard of people getting married to have a few sexual encounters, then off to divorce court!!
I think most people have no real problem with premarital sex.

You know, the church is not big enough to be considered as "most people." :)
I was speaking of the general population. If I wanted to be more specific, the youth of America.

berkeley 06-07-2007 12:52 AM

"...there are a lot worse things than being single. One of them is being married... to the wrong person.
I counsel behind the scenes all the time and thank God I can walk away from it. I wouldn't want to go through what they're going through.
But if you'd listen to us in the beginning you wouldn't get in those messes.
If you'd take this stuff to Jesus and pray it through we wouldn't have to counsel you 5 yrs down the road with three of four kids and a man that doesn't love you and never did.
You need to listen and you need to pray it through now, not then, now.
Cause if you don't you're headed for problems.
Marriage is NOT the answer to the lust of the flesh... it only complicates it..."
