You Decide

We decided to ask you, our friends. do you feel like we (Brother Alvear and I) should own a gun?

1. Do you need one?
2. Would you use it if you had it?
3. Is it for people, critters, or both?

Good questions.

I would say that if it is for the protection of yourselves, your home, and your possessions--- Yes.

I just pray that God doesn't ever let your family be in the position that you'd have to use it.

It seemed to serve you well the other night.

It seems that the gun had been put into your possession at just the right time for "such a time as this".

The prayer would be that you would never have to actually point it at another human being but, being in the neighborhood you are in, it certainly proved itself as a potent scare tactic.

You asked us to go to prayer when this happened... but it appears that God, in His foresight, had already put the tool in your possession to send them running.

Of course God is able to send them running in other manners... but this was the manner He made available to you that night.

From a man that served in the U.S. Army for 14 years, and a preacher now, I would say................ good question, any more good questions? Honestly, thats a hard one for me to answer. I will say, that based upon what I know of you, I believe that you have the proper wisdom and the love of souls to do the right thing if you were to own one. JMO.

Sister Alvear 06-05-2007 09:06 AM

I would never shoot at anybody but my boys would shoot in the air to scare away the 'would be" bandits...news travels fast in these parts...I would "preach" to them...but our kids "think" we should at least own one...I don't really know... My sister in the states carries a gun in her purse but she has a very dangerous job...My folks always had a gun... I have mixed thoughts about guns...
My son that is going to live in the jungle wants a rifle for hunting purposes and wild animals but we don't have the money to buy him one at this point.

Just wanted to hear your all's opinion...we like to listen to the wise...

MrsMcD 06-05-2007 09:09 AM

Because of the things you have posted, I think you should own a gun. I bought a Smith and Wesson Airweight yesterday and I pray that I NEVER have to use it. I'd rather be safe than sorry. :-)

StillStanding 06-05-2007 09:39 AM

In your situation, you may feel safer with a gun. I support the right of folks to own a gun.

That being said, I have never owned a gun!

When I was about seven years old, I found a gun in my dad's desk drawer, pointed at my grandfather and tried to pull the trigger. Luckily, my father had the safety on and I didn't know how to release it. I could have possibly killed my grandfather!

This fear has stuck with me my entire life. I read somewhere that a big majority of the time, a home gun is used on another family member instead of an intruder.

berkeley 06-05-2007 09:48 AM

I don't think that we need to tell the Alvear's that they should or should not own a gun.
If you suggest they own a gun, you are going to feel guilty if it is mishandled and someone is injured by friendly fire.
If you suggest that they do not own a gun, and something happens that
could have been avoided if they had owned a gun, again, regrets.

Let's just pray that God would speak to them on this matter, and whatever
they decide, we will support them. Amen!

No Wax,

rgcraig 06-05-2007 09:49 AM

Yes.

If you only used it to shoot in the air to scare off the bandits it would be well worth it.

Just make sure everyone is properly trained to use it.

If I Had a Gun!

I am a pastor - I deal with people day and night. Some good - some bad, some happy - some sad, some sane - some crazy.
If I had a gun - I would shoot somebody and then I would have a prison ministry.
I know me and I sure don't need a gun! My thoughts are - I have a car - why would I need a gun! My wife thinks with me behind the wheel of a car is too dangerous now - What if I had a car AND a gun - man - someone would be dead fo' sho'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

berkeley 06-05-2007 10:09 AM

'fo sho'

Ronzo 06-05-2007 10:12 AM

Daz sho nuff rite

berkeley 06-05-2007 10:13 AM

Mrpapajo 06-05-2007 10:13 AM

Did not a angel stand between you and a man with a gun pointed at your stomach? Why would you need one?

SDG 06-05-2007 10:17 AM

Sister Alvear,

A good friend posted this in another forum some moons ago ... and it has always stayed in my mind... Please take it w/ a grain of salt:

One might like to consider the following in the discussion:

Lk 22: 35 And he [Jesus] said unto them [the disciples], When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.

36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.

38 And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.

From the context of this chapter, it would seems as thought Jesus is bringing to the attention of His disciples that while He was with them (on earth), He personally took care of everything they needed, even their protection, even when He was not physically in their company.

Now, Jesus is making it clear that His provision and protection shall continue with them, but that the physical circumstances will be different than it has been in the past.

Unlike in the boat during a storm, the disciples will have to exercise both physical and spiritual authority and power – more on their own. They will not have the luxury of going back and waking Jesus up, and pleading for Him to “do something”.

There are now the realities of the world to contend with, such has having to pay for things they need, changes of clothing to carry along. As it is also well known, there were road agents (robbers) that one would most likely encounter – guys that are willing to take your life for what ever you might have on your person. For this, one will need a means of self-protection: a sword, if you will. Today, a gun might serve you better.

Doctrine: You might be as gentle as a dove and keep peace with all men (where possible), if you are robbed of your coat, give the robber your cloak also. But, if the highwayman is bent on taking your life: Kill him!

ThePastorsCoach 06-05-2007 10:18 AM

Sister Alvear - My dear sweet wife said to tell you - she votes that you should have a gun. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM maybe I should be sweeter here!!!!!!!!!!!

Sherri 06-05-2007 10:18 AM

We have a gun in the house, but I don't even know how to use it. I know Eddie would shoot someone (just to harm them, not to kill) if they were coming after his family. I don't think I would have the nerve even to shoot someone. But we've always had one ever since we've been married. Eddie used to work in his uncle's gun shop, so it's just in his blood I guess.

No sir... I only know of you guys from here (and I am assuming you are in or around Atlanta Ga)

We are trying to put together a trip to Conyers Ga on 6/22 to hear Israel Houghton.

Dear sweet Sister Alvea, I think the question you have to be asking yourself is: Just suppose that even tho you didn't aim to shoot at someone, suppose they or someone else got ahold of your arm while the gun was in your hand and then the gun went off and shot someone and killed them. Could you live with yourself after that?

I am not opposed to guns!! I grew up in a house full of hunters so we always had guns. But I just see you as such a sensitive person that I don't know how you could handle it if an accident of the worst kind happened.

What do you think?

The Mrs 06-05-2007 12:04 PM

Sis. Alvear, if you do decide to keep a gun, may I offer these considerations?

#1) What goes up, must come down. If you shoot a bullet in the air, it CAN come down and kill someone. (Thank you CSI for that valuable tidbit of information!)

#2) Buy blanks instead of bullets. It will insure that neither you, nor them, if they get a hold of your gun, will harm anyone. (Although if fired at point blank range, they can kill.)

#3) Learn as much about gun safety as possible. :thumbsup

Sister Alvear 06-05-2007 12:37 PM

Once a robber held a gun to my stomach and I did tell him he would have to shoot my angel first because the Lord sent me to that village. I knew the Lord sent me to do a work there and I would return...that is not my only experience with guns and robbers...however we have been thinking maybe we should have a gun more so to scare off would be robbers...no I would die before I would shoot someone.
Blanks may be a good idea. I would sure keep it in a safe place. I am not a fan of guns...
