But as it is written, eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

Consider those things, which the eye hath seen. The relentless fury of a hurricane…the intimacy of childbirth…the spectacle of a volcano erupting…the grace, of a coasting swan. Our lives are woefully too short, to inventory even this, His present creation. Who can imagine even handier handiwork?

Or consider what things, the ear has heard. The laughter of a little girl…the euphony that quips across a glen, that’s fens of larks away…the gut-wrenching cry, of a broken heart. Yet there is a prepared place, where hearing is infinitely richer.

Neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
Not only sight and sound, but our very hearts, are barred from the gates of this Eden. For this prepared place…and these prepared things…reside far beyond our greatest imagination. Though we are equipped with incredible eyes and ears…with which to gauge these eternal things…they are not enough. What God hath prepared…for them that love him…can neither be sensed nor thought of.

The eye, and its wiring to the brain, are engineering feats beyond words. The ear is no less astounding. The microscopic detail…the millions of parts…the intricate electro-chemical networks, are simply stunning. And through these eyeports we are given a lifetime: to behold the splendor and awe of creation…to read His word…and to see the very people, that He so loved. Through the earports, we hear the giggle of children, the songs of creation, the roar of industry, and the lark’s echolalia.

In our text, Paul is quoting Isaiah the prophet. Perhaps his point…in the mouth of two witnesses…is to again emphasize, the enormous change at Pentecost. For 4,000 years…a full two-thirds of life on earth…man remained blind, to a seeing so much higher than human sight. Deaf also to a hearing, so much higher than the human ear. And senseless to a love so far removed, from what the human heart can feel. And so Isaiah’s prophecy, ends outside the gates. Then came Pentecost. The promise of the fathers. A spiritual re-birth, available to whosoever will.

Now we know, that our God is a spirit. And we know, that: a spirit hath not flesh and bone, as ye see me have. This would mean, that the engineer and craftsman, who formed the human eye…hasn’t one of his own. The genius designer and technician, who planted the human ear…has no ear. Not that our God is blind or deaf, mind you. But eyes and ears, would be an immeasurable condescension for God.

He that formed the eye, shall he not see? He that planted the ear, shall he not hear?

In His domain, there is a seeing much higher than eyesight…a hearing much greater than audio…a feeling far beyond human hearts.

But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

Paul now ushers us beyond Isaiah, and through the gates. All who Jesus baptizes with the Holy Ghost, can at last enter into these things…which God hath prepared for them that love him. By His Spirit, He reveals them unto us. Deep things. Eternal things. Before Pentecost, man was hopelessly barred from sensing or feeling that prepared place. We could not hear the choir of angels, billions strong. We could not see, the light that lighteth the city of God.

Not that we can see or hear them now…these things. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit. They aren’t quite tangible, to be touched or seen or heard. But they are revealed no less. Somehow our Spiritual God…using the constant arrivals in our soul from our eyeports and earports…reveals the unseen and the unheard, from within us. But we can faint explain them…they must be experienced. What words shall we use? With what seeing and hearing, shall we relate to our fellow, these revealed things? Paul’s things not lawful to be uttered was not a judicial bar. The things he wished to utter, defied the very laws of language, and her billions of words. Their miserable failure to speak of these things, would be an injustice. We can only weep at an altar…pray in the spirit…and dance before the lord. His eternal purposes…like lightening in the storm…flash the skyline of our narrow way.

It is the saddest of truths, that even should we find a way to communicate these things, our fellow man will scarce hear of it.

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

If life’s greatest sights and sounds are a one, then these prepared things, are quintillions. To tell of them, is like taking a measured sip, from a gushing hydrant. Maybe it’s His very aura staining the walls, in the cavern of our soul. Perhaps the signature of His presence, alters the frequency of our heart strings. Whatever it is, we can only say that having eyes, we now see. Having ears, we now hear what the Spirit saith to the churches.

Beautiful post...

I've always looked at that scripture to mean heaven, also in accordance with Peter 1:8, about rejoicing with joy unspeakable. I think with the Holy Ghost, we get a glimpse now of what heaven would be like, (in regards to the spirit) but we won't fully experience it until we're there.

One time, God had blessed me, in giving me just a taste of the glory of heaven, and the joy was so strong, that it was enough to take your breath away, that if He would have let it lasted and longer, it would have killed me. There really isn't any words to express just how powerful that was. Even if we could be heavily anointed, where we just sing, dance, prophesy, talking in tongues all day, having joy rain down upon us, having no control of ourselves, it wouldn't in no wise compare.

And people whom I've talked too who had this same or similar experience, all had said the same thing.

Thank you! I woke up the other morning with the Cross on my mind.

Honestly I sometimes wake up with my daily to-do list on my mind, but that morning Christ and Him crucified was on my mind. It was just so wonderful that I just wanted to lay there and glory in that feeling.

Why We Need the Holy Spirit

My Pentecostal experience has taught me there is great value in waiting in the Spirit’s presence. The Christian life is not simply intellectual, theological or mind-oriented. It reaches those deeper parts of us that relate to the mystery of the heart in adoration to God. The Spirit reaches into areas of our life where we know what God’s will is but are not doing it.

And the Spirit forms the character of Christ in us as we allow Him to do so. The Spirit wants to reach into the complacency of our life, where we would be satisfied to live as we are now living. He wants to come upon us and make us earnest about the work of God, make us want God’s will and purpose to be done in and through us.

God would have His Spirit call us out of a life of spiritual complacency to one of deep surrender. Through the Spirit, we can have the joy of hearing from God like we have never heard from Him before. The Spirit is with us at the crossroads of life, as we make the most critical decisions. We need the Spirit of God in an increasingly deeper measure. He wants to open up avenues of worship and of vision to us. May each of us cry out, “Spirit of God, I need You! I can never do this on my own. I can’t live the Christian life on my own. I can’t know what Your will is on my own. I need You, Holy Spirit.”

I was touched with the eloquence of the thought expressed in this post!

I was reading in Job this morning, and this particular passage is one of my favorite scriptures of all in the Word, and I thought of your post, and wanted to mention it.

Job 42:1-5
1 Then Job answered the LORD, and said,

2 I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee.

3 Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.

4 Hear, I beseech thee, and I will speak: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.

5 I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.

I think this is a most powerful scripture because Job had gone through so much, and had so many questions for the Lord, but then when the Lord began to speak to him, it was like Job all of a sudden got a revelation of just WHO he was speaking with. He was speaking of his eye seeing, and understanding just HOW marvelous, wonderful, and mighty the Lord was, and he had nothing left to say, but to ask for the Lord to forgive him. It was a powerful moment in his life, changed his life forever from that point on!

There is something about our spiritual eyes beginning to see and understand the Lord, and who He is, that causes all of our questions, problems, desires, thoughts, ideas, concerns... etc... to disappear, and we fall on our faces in worship, because our flesh cannot stand in the presence of the Almighty.
