Icy Cold Weather

Sooo... how's the weather in your neck of the woods? Seems 'ole man winter has arrived rather early with lower than normal temperatures in a lot of places.

Where I live, the thermometer read a balmy -1 this morning... which is unusual here for this time of year. These kind of temperatures are usually in January or February. The next couple of days we will have wind, and temperatures dipping down into the minuses. Brrr!

Hey KBTW!

It is -7 degrees here this morning. Unfortunately, I have to go out IN IT!! Bleah! Last night I went to move my car so my husband could plow and all the doors were frozen shut! I had to climb into the hatch back and warm the car up for about 20 minutes before I could wham them open!

This kind of weather is really hard on my hands and feet. (Raynauds)

Re: Icy Cold Weather

Hey back! :) Yikes -7 eh! I've been struggling to keep the house warm with wood fires, having to add 2-3 logs every hour. Since the stove is in the basement, I've been getting lots of exercise this week running up and down the stairs :lol

I have to go out in it this afternoon. I've got my husband's diesel truck plugged in so hopefully it will start. It actually kind of hurts to breathe in the cold air when I go out. At least we are not dealing with ice here, just snow.

Talked to family in Texas, and it is pretty messy there. In Austin, about 40-50 cars were stranded on a toll road overpass this morning!

Re: Icy Cold Weather

I've been running up and down the stairs for different reasons. Sales! LOL!

Wood heat warms you three times. 1. When you cut it. 2. When you run up and down the stairs to load the wood stove and 3. When it heats the house. :)

Re: Icy Cold Weather

Snow, winds and the highs of -21 and -38 overnight (wind chills are more horrific than the actual temps).....pretty much the same today. Cant figure why other livestock owners such as my family, will not pull their animals and give them a place to get out of this bloody weather. It is not fit for man, let alone animals. All of my animals are safe and warm in their stalls with hay and heating blankets. Some of my family who live in the south (US) says they are having warm days ????? LOL Cant imagine that!

I like that. I'll have to remember to repeat that to myself over the next few days! :nod

I think you probably win the award for the coldest temps!!!! Do you burn fires to stay warm, or do you use another way to heat?

We have a husky dog who loves the snow and the cold. However, I can hardly get her to go outside in this weather, she is just out for a minute, and right back in!

yay!!! :heeheehee We have 2 fireplaces with one in the master bedroom and yes they stay going at night! I actually misread the thermometer outdoors...it is -29 right now. Our dogs do not go out but to potty and back in. One of them (pit-bull/Rottweiler mix) nearly got her pads frost bite the other day. My animals are my babies :) I do not put my kids outside so my dogs and kittys are inside as well. :) But my other babies (4 Horses and 2 Cows) are in a barn and stalls with loads of warm hay and heated blankets.......I could not imagine letting them outside amidst this foul weather.

For all those spouting global warming stuff... seems to me global cooling to be the more likely event taking place!

Re: Icy Cold Weather

I wish we had more snow, as it would help blanket the house from the cold. Usually when we get these temperatures, we have a lot more snow, and the snowbanks actually help keep the heat inside. Right now, we only have a skiff of snow, and that is making it harder to keep the house warm.

aww, thank you! My wish is the same but sadly animal abuse is more common than going to the petrol station or the market place :( and it is steadily climbing. All I know is I am their voice when I can be ...ie; signing petitions , AR movements, protests, A.L.F. (Animal Liberation Front)... and other things in being their voice against the human machine. Not all people agree with me and what I stand for but that is them and not me. I will always be proud of what God made of me and the big compassionate heart he blessed me with :) also being Vegan is something not for many but it is who I am as well. I would not have it any other way. I hope you and your family have a wonderful and blessed Holiday season my friend!

I have always had a very soft spot for animals. I am not involved in any petitions or anything and I do eat meat. I feel it is part of the cycle of life....it is a harsh cycle, but it is reality. But I do believe that we should be as compassionate as possible with the process.

Lol!!!That is a bit insensitive :smack

Over here, it stays around 50 high, and around 25-30 for the lows, which is pretty cold for us over here. Hey, even 70 is cold for us, lol.

Was -9 here last night. Supposed to warm up some and snow today... I WISH it would snow about 5-6 inches to blanket the house, and help insulate against the cold! We have very little snow right now with the minus temps, very hard to keep house warm.

Well this is the time of year that I especially praise Jesus for the weather here in Southern California. Granted at night these past couple of days it has been unseasonably cold but by the late morning it's up in the high 50's. Went for a bike ride this afternoon and it is beautiful outside! The Lord is good!

Re: Icy Cold Weather

we have been iced in since Thursday night.

Power went out at 4am Friday morning. No school, didnt get power back until Friday evening.

No way to get out on Saturday as the roads were slick ice.

No church Sunday, still slick ice.

We did get about 4 hours of 34 degrees which melted some of the ice. I was able to make a run to the grocery store.

But then back below freezing last night so the roads are slick black ice this morning.

School is out again today. We should get enough above freezing (still in the 30s) to melt and burn off a good bit of the ice.

hopefully we will be back to some version of normal tomorrow....

BUT temps are dropping below freezing every night this week and that means refreeze for the early commute.

Plus last night we had freezing fog to help get things nice and slick. hopfully we wont have that every night this week.

fun times in Dallas!

Wow Ferd! That's awful... do you have a source of heat in your home other than electric?

I am so very thankful that here in the Northwest, we can have studs in our tires, makes a HUGE difference when you have to drive on ice, which we have been doing for the last week.

I took my husband's pickup to town last week, and the roads were solid ice. Our main family vehicle has studs in the tires. The pickup doesn't, we just have good all season tires on it. I was taking it slow because the road had several layers of ice and melted snow.

Suddenly, a large buck ran right out in front of me. I carefully applied the brakes, and thought oh boy... this one's down for the count, because I really didn't think I was going to miss him, but he must have hit the "gas" because I slid when I hit the brakes, and just barely missed him. Tires were able to grab, and I righted the vehicle, and continued on.

Animals and I on the road have a great history, and that buck was lucky to get away from me! :lol

LOL! Yes, my husband still has not gotten a deer. However, hitting one with a car can be expensive meat! ;)

Re: Icy Cold Weather

I think deer have a built-in calendar for hunting season. They were all over our property, and as soon as the first gun shots of the season were fired, they disappeared. They're back now, including that beautiful buck I almost hit. Where they go, I don't know! But, they must have a built-in radar to hide out during hunting season! We had all planned to get a deer this season, and my husband was the only one who came home with one, for which we are thankful, but I sure wish we could have gotten a couple more!

we have a fireplace but its been utterly neglected and I wouldnt dare start a fire in it! LOL! (DONT TELL HOOIVE!!!)

Friday the temp inside got down to about 63 or so, so we didnt freeze. We had friends close we could have walked to who had electricity if it got too bad...but we survived. I have co-workers who were without electricity for 4 days!

Dallas, has very little ability to cope with icy conditions. we just dont get it enough to warrent major investments in counter measures. mostly we just hunkerdown for the 2 or 3 days of icy weather we get every other (or every third) year.

This has been a far longer bit of bad icy weather than normal for sure.

I need to post some pictures of the turkeys we saw at Thanksgiving!

It was a whole flock of birds right on the road. These guys stay hidden during hunting season, but as soon as it is over, here they come by the dozens.
