Maybe a patch they wear on their shirt that says "Married"? |
Re: Alternative engagement tokens...

Re: Alternative engagement tokens...
not so much thinking of a symbol to show the world "we're married" but just a gift

I've heard of beautiful watches with diamonds on them given by many Apostolics. You know, watches are accepted, but rings aren't. :)
Or perhaps on a more serious note, you could each exchange Bibles. I've heard of that being done too. |

If you wear watches, you could always do that in place of rings. The bonus is that watches can be engraved on the back. Here are some good suggestions from The Wedding Channel: a beautiful jewelry box a bottle of extravagant perfume an antique hair ornament a pretty journal a leather desk set an exquisitely bound book, personally inscribed a monogrammed handkerchief an antique desk clock an engraved money clip A bi-plane ride for two, complete with old fashioned goggles A special photograph in a frame A love letter written on a beautiful card An original poem or love song A tree sapling (traditional in Bermuda and the Netherlands) Joint personalized stationery A book of love poetry, inscribed Tickets to your favorite opera or sports event A cassette or CD compiled of favorite love songs --Link |

Great ideas, Miss B!

Re: Alternative engagement tokens...
Your post sparked an idea, Miss B. ... My husband loves trees. Our anniversary is coming up. Perhaps I should get him a tree sapling for an anniversary present. That would be pretty unique, I think.... We could plant the tree in a special place with a nice park bench close by. It would be a nice memory for years to come.

Re: Alternative engagement tokens...
Are there still churches that forbid rings now days? I was not aware of that. If I may ask, what would be the difference in a ring and an expensive watch with diamonds? If it is against the rules for rings, why not have a CHEAP Wal-Mart watch or rather use a cell phone that has a clock on it? When we got married, I got a cheap gold band and for the engagement I got a white Bible. I now have a 2 piece ring set with a diamond that was given to my husband to give to me. I cherish both and have never felt convicted of wearing either. I guess the story of the Prodical son would not go over so well in the church today.

Re: Alternative engagement tokens...
It's called inconsistency. A band around your finger is a sin. A band around your wrist is ok ...if there's a small clock attached to it.

Re: Alternative engagement tokens...
A watch is jewelry, so to not exchange wedding rings because it's jewelry but instead do watches is kinda silly.

Re: Alternative engagement tokens...
I do not wear a watch. My girlfriend does not wear a watch. Most of the saints in our church do not wear flashy or jeweled watches.

Re: Alternative engagement tokens...
The no jewelry position doesn't seemed to be strongly supported by scripture.

Even Jesus himself wears jewelry, what is the anti-jewelry crowd going to do, scold Jesus for wearing jewelry? Is the legalistic crowd going to send Jesus to hell for wearing a beard and jewelry? |
