I need a Laptop Computer

Just thought one of you might have a suggestion for a me. I need a laptop computer to get set up in my private practice...all the scheduling and billing is done online and my old computer has just about had it. Anyone know of a good deal?

Blessings, Rhoni

Scott Hutchinson 06-09-2007 07:28 PM

If I was wealthy I would buy you one.

SarahElizabeth 06-09-2007 07:31 PM

If I were wealthy, I would help all of the people on this board who need help!!

There are usually quite a few good deals on Dells.

Check out this site, Rhoni:

Scott Hutchinson 06-09-2007 07:32 PM

SE you have a good heart.

Ronzo 06-09-2007 07:53 PM

Rhoni,

Those of us *COUGH* "in the industry" *COUGH* call them "Notebook Computers" now.

They all run way too hot to be called 'laptops' anymore. You wouldn't want any of them on your lap, trust me. They get uncomfortably hot with the hopped up processors in them. ;)

I have the Dell Inspiron E1705. I love mine. Not just saying that because I work there either.

It's a big notebook though. It's got some heft to it (17 inch screen), so I have a rolling case for mine. I don't carry it on my shoulder. It's this case, which also has an 'overnight' compartment that acts as a small suitcase.

BoredOutOfMyMind 06-09-2007 08:02 PM

Be a Geek!

Dells have Linux.

Not so tech minded, Either a manufacturer with direct sales like Dell, HP, or someplace like NewEgg.com .

Find what a warranty for a small business user costs, and find out if you have business interruption coverage on your Insurance covering Data only, or Data & Software. Or invest in a subscription to someplace like Salesforce.com to make online appointments that are backup offsite.

Lately Best Buy has had some really great deals on Toshiba laptop computers. Don't know what they have right now but a week or two ago for $599 they had a dual core Intel processor, 15.4" wide britescreen with 1 gig RAM, dual layer DVD / CD burner, microsoft works, media card reader, firewire port, etc. Oh and with Vista Premium.

If I did not like Rhoni, I would NEVER recommend Best Buy after some of what horrors The Geek Squad has inflicted on users.

They have been shown to be selling returns on those mark down racks. She is not a technophobe. My Linux comment was tic, and I think she should avoid BB like the plague.

Monkeyman 06-09-2007 08:09 PM

Ya should of told me yesterday girl...I stood in line for 3 and half hours for a 50% off sale!!!!!!

1GB is too little for Vista... 2 GB should be standard on all computers running Vista... especially Premium.

If you are buying a new product Best Buy is fine. I don't plan on buying open box items from them or using the Geek Squad!

I do huge amounts of research and comparison shopping before buying and usually that means I buy major purchases online.

In the case of a new notebook computer though BB had absolutely the best price for the feature by about two hundred bucks.

A couple of other places were close and one matched it BUT with rebates you had to mail off and wait three months for your money. BB's was an instant rebate off at time of purchase.

Yup. That is why the basic computers they sell with only 512 mb RAM only have VISTA basic. My notebook would barely run at that. I upgraded to 2 gigs immediately.

I paid $62.00 per stick of gig about two months ago and now it is on sale online for $38.00 or $42 bucks delivered!

You should try to get a Dell with an AMD Turion X2 processor, atleast 1 GB of RAM, and see if you can get Windows XP instead of Windows Vista, because Vista has too many bugs in it. In about 2 years, you should be able to get Vista.

Why the AMD dual core processor over an Intel one?

I have almost always purchased Dell computers but about two months ago when I bought they were two hundred bucks higher with the same stuff as the Tobshiba I bought at Best Buy.

3 terms here are VERY important

Business

Warranty

Female

Rhoni does not need grief of saving a few hundred dollars over being able to pick up the phone and say "it is broke, please arrange to repair it." One of our producers has a Dell. They shipped him by FedEx a new one when his broke.

With a dock and a 22 inch wide flat screen monitor he has a nice setup.

Yep, that's why I have a Dell. I have a new keyboard that came in two days and is working great.

A AMD dual core processor is faster than a Intel one running at a faster speed. They are the best and I ought to know, because I have never had any problems with AMD's but Intel's are too slow for me.

I think right now the dual core chips are pretty comparable. There was a short period of time where AMD leaped ahead of Intel but as always Intel used it's deep pockets to surge back.

Unless there is a price advantage I prefer Intel.

Custom made laptops are better than Dells and yes, you can build them in case you didn't know.

There have been an unbiased testing that was done with AMD and Intel processors and it has shown that AMD slower processors run faster than Intel faster processors and they cost less. I know of some computer geeks that were pro-Intel until they built some systems using AMD processors and now they are pro-AMD.

I never preferred Intel, because they are too slow and have too much heat. That is one of the main reasons that I am pro-AMD, because they're the best.

I have seen some tests done and AMD processors beat Intel processors hands down. Dell has finally wised up and starting using the best processors. I have one Intel processor that is so pathetic, but I knew that Intel's were that bad though. My HP is really awesome with a AMD Turion X2 processor that beats my Intel processor hands down.

The only thing that I don't like about HP's is that they have the recovery on the HD, which is pretty stupid and that is one of the things that I like Dell's, because they have a image DVD with their systems.

"GL" 06-09-2007 09:23 PM

Rhoni,

I always buy Dells and buy the most extended warranty possible. I just abuse my laptops and know that it will need various repairs in the future.

They've been pretty good to us in the past.

HP's have extended warranties too and if I drop mine and break it, I get a new one.

Rico 06-10-2007 03:38 AM

I bought two new Dell's this year with our tax money because it was time to upgrade, plus I knew I was going to start working from home. One is an Optiplex 320 and the other is a Latitude. They both came with 3 year warranties and I have been very happy with both of them. I gave my old Optiplex (which I got through Ebay for a couple of hundred dollars) to my son and my old Inspiron to my wife (who never ever gets on the internet for anything)

Rhoni 06-10-2007 05:53 AM

O.K. guys thank-you for the advice, I see I need:

Dell
2GB
Windows XP [which I know I need for work]
don't buy at Best Buy
warranty

Did I forget anything? I'm a geek but not a techno...

Blessings, Rhoni

You know Dell Computers are now at Wal Mart stores! I think that was supposed to start today. I don't know that I would go that route.
