Favorite Bible for Preaching
What Bible (not translation) do you use for preaching? Do you prefer large or hand size? Large print or small print? References or text only? Wide Margin or not?
Do you make notes in the Bible you preach from, or do you keep the text unmarked? I've used a little bit of everything and I'd be interested in hearing what others use. |
Re: Favorite Bible for Preaching
I use a Holman "Super Giant Print Editiin" bible (easy on the eyes). It's a plain bible with a few references here and there. I don't preach or teach using a publisher's references so for me a plain text bible is preferable. I don't mark in it (my bibles I used for study are plenty marked tho). I did however add three bookmark ribbons to it so I can have several main texts ready to go (I often do a reading from the OT, a NT epistle, and a Gospel).
I picked this edition because it was easy to read, plain with no frills, and inexpensive. Works for me. |
Re: Favorite Bible for Preaching
I have 3 KJV that I generally use. Holman Hand Size is my stand by. Mine are marked up big time. Most references I have seen dont add anything to me so I like the less the better.
Are you Randy who wrote the good teaching about THE LOGOS a few years ago? |
Re: Favorite Bible for Preaching
I have a KJV Bible given to me when I graduated. It's well worn and marked up. People have said I should get a new Bible to use, and I have several various Bible translations/types at home, but I love using this old, worn one.

The super giant print bible, while nice on the eyes, is not really handy if you're holding it while speaking (in such a case I'd prefer a regular sized bible that can be held in one hand). I'd like to get a quarto-sized pulpit bible (might be over the top tho!) so I could REALLY impress folks. Nothing like thinking the preacher is gonna slap the sin outta you with a super gargantuan 10 pound bible metal clasps and all, right? ;) |

We have house Church too! I use 2 music stands that I overlap so they kind of lock together. I place my Bible on one side and my song book or notes on the other. I ended up taking my laptop a few times, so I lowered one of the stands to hold the laptop and the Bible has the other one all to itself. I don't like the bottom edge 'lip' that holds the music in place. It sticks up too far. Other then that it works great. |

Randy I notice you are in Tennessee. What area as I am in South Central Ky.
As I was reading your web site I saw you are in Sweetwater. Im thinking that is close to Athens where I have a friend who ministers in that area named Phillip Gordon. |

Re: Favorite Bible for Preaching
I'm not a preacher, but my favorite study Bible is one called the Special Study Edition. It's a large print black Bible with a depiction of a sword on the front. I cannot locate the name of the publisher (in fact, the preface is simply signed as "The publisher"), but I think this is the same one.
http://www.christianbook.com/kjv-bon...9799?event=AAI It looks virtually identical to mine. One thing I love about it is that they've (suggestively) added red letter text to the OT, where God is speaking. Also, there's a vast amount of reference materials throughout, and in both the front and back of the Bible. I also like using the Thompson Chain Reference, as well. As for my pastor, I'm sure he has a number of Bibles available to him, but when he preaches or teaches, he prefers his iPad. |

I don't use a large size print...yet. I do use a Scofield reference Bible. I almost never read or use the notes. It was a gift to me when I was in college. It has lasted 30 years, and hopefully it will last another 30 years. :)

Re: Favorite Bible for Preaching
In my opinion CAMBRIDGE is the best Bible. I have had more of them than any other over the years. The ones I had were perfect print and perfect size!
I wish I could find a NKJV in Cambridge for a decent price. |

Which Cambridge is your favorite? |
Re: Favorite Bible for Preaching
I have always got the same size Cambridge. I just measured it at about 7.5x5. It says on the front page Cameo 16, refs India. Dont know what that means but it is black with calfskin leather cover.
I bought this one used at the Discount Book Store in Seveirville about 5-6 years ago. It was marked in a bit but at $35 it was a great deal. |

Randy, is there an NASB you would recommend that does not have the see-through page problem that many other Bibles have?
