Jealousy: The Worst Sin of All?
Is Jealousy the worst of all sins?
Consider the following: 1. Jealousy causes married folk to split up and run off with other people. 2. Jealousy causes people to steal. 3. Jealousy caused Cain to kill Abel. 4. Jealousy causes some to sow discord in the church - leading to church splits, backsliders, and unhealthy competition between pastors and saints. 5. Jealousy causes financial hardships. We take on too much debt in order to "keep up with the Jones'. Solomon says, "Anger is cruel and fury overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy?" (Proverbs 27:4). The Apostle Paul writes, "The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry, and witchcraft, hatred, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy, drunkenness, orgies and the like." (Galatians 5:19-21a) A list of sins from the proverbs of the prophet Solomon contains things that go hand in hand with jealousy. It says, "There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stir up dissension among brothers." (Proverbs 6:16-19) In short, jealousy is the product of a person who feels they are superior to their fellow man, and to God. It is the pinnacle of self-centeredness. Jealousy is what caused lucifer to declare "I will ascend". Jealousy is the root cause of a host of other sins. So, what do you think? Is jealousy the worst of all sins? |
I know your Jealous of my fishing abilities... :D

I'd go with Pride.
Do you want me to quote scripture? :girlpopcorn |

Thank you for this kind and thoughtful response. :lol So Chan, you seriously don't think some sins are worse than others? Give me scripture that proves it please? Why are some things listed as abominations, and other sins are not? |

It is not a Jealous thought in the mind of the person being held back. We preach and teach and talk about Jealousy. I think it is high time someone were to preach and teach on how not to cause folks to bring forth that fealing in folks..... |
I think that Pride could be a birthing place for jealosy...
|
Pr 13:10 Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.
Pr 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. I like PEACE, so the first verse is my favorite. |

But wouldn't that fear that hinders be birthed from jealousy? ie a minister having a Saul complex toward a potential David? |
Quote:
A person who hates their self ... suffering from an inferiority complex ... and is willing to take their life ... is as proud as the Pharisee who believes their spirituality and works outshine us all ... the FOCUS IS STILL THE SAME ... SELF. Those who struggle w/ jealousy and coveting also have pride issues. The focus is on self when they wish they could have what is not theirs, want someone for their self, etc. |

As you can kinda tell, I don't like being wrong. :sly But, the older I get, the more I realize that sometimes the spoil of victory is not worth the battle scars. Contention really is a pride issue. But isn't pride related to jealousy? |

Pride and Idolatry would be twins.............so would be Stubbornness and Witchcraft......IMHO |
Pride is something that can't be hidden that well.....
Jealosy can... It can be a seething, festering cauldron hidden underneath the surface... I do think at times it can boil over..but folks can hide it well... Pride is much more visible... imo... |

The biggest fears in humans are death, which is totally a survival instinct, and public speaking, which is totally a pride issue. We want people to view us as "together". Public speaking often demonstrates that we are not. I have always said that shyness is a fruit of pride and jealousy. |

In most cases, "Shyness" can be attributed ... to temperament ...which is God-given ... but some use it as a rouse to cover their selves ...
I also think jealousy is probably one the most dangerous expressions of pride. One only has to look at the amount of women murdered in this country because of jealousy to see it's heinous power over man's heart. |

Everyone deals with certain forms of pride .. .the Apostle Paul calls it godlessness.
Whether it's in the form hedonism, self-indulgence, feelings of inadequacy/inferiority, judgementalism, self-righteousness, religiosity ... etc .... Jesus' macro view of the law gives as a clue to God's design for it .... the first commandment is to love God first ... w/ all all our heart, mind, soul, energy ... and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves .... You see, God knows that in our godlessness, we put ourselves first in so many things we battle and struggle with. When we put Him and others first ... we turn to God and away from ourselves. |

1If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.
3Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6Who, being in very nature[a] God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7but made himself nothing, taking the very nature[b] of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross! 9Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. |
