Visiting Cleveland Church of Christ

I am very excited and hopeful. However, one immediate drawback is the lack of diversity. This Church of Christ has musical instruments and MOST of the women are wearing hats.

Hoping I'm not setting myself up for failure.

They have a choir. Singing an OLD song from the 1980's.

This choir needs more tenors!

Everyone appears dressed up in their Sunday's best...

Speakers are not too loud.

The lack of diversity is... something, but this part of town is markedly not diverse.

Choir sounds great! The lead is going in! Hands lifted, men and women worshipping Jesus.

Man just led the congregation in a fiery, longer-than-five minutes prayer. LONG, LONG, LONG time since experiencing that in a church service.

The piano player is bald and the drummer is gray... they are both GREAT!

This church used to be affiliated with COOLJC a long time ago, but I don't think it is now.

I really need a church home and a body of believers for fellowship. I may have found that here.

LOL!
There are Pentecostal, "Churches of Christ". There have been several demominational organizations to use the phrase, "Church of Christ".

Re: Visiting Cleveland Church of Christ

After visiting a worthless church, a strange church, and several other churches, I may have finally found a place to call home.

I spoke with the Bishop after service and plainly asked him if this church teaches that a person must speak in tongues in order to be saved. He said, "We believe in speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives utterance and that is the initial evidence of someone being filled with the Holy Ghost but we don't teach this is for salvation". This is how I understand the scriptures to teach salvation.

He then quoted the scripture, "All who call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved".

This church baptizes in Jesus Name.

I have driven by this church countless times, less than 2 miles from my home and job and just wouldn't stop in because I thought I knew all I needed to know about their doctrine from their website.

Not how the early church believed, but at least they have a credit union....that's what's important.

Interesting.

"Our faith is based on the set of doctrines believed in and practiced by the Apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, as found in the Holy Scriptures. These include such beliefs and doctrines as: the infallibility of the Bible; the Oneness of God, namely that Yahweh (Jehovah) God of the Old Testament is Jesus Christ of the New Testament; water baptism by immersion in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; the reception of the Holy Ghost by every believer with the initial sign of speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives utterance (Acts 2:4); the living of holy life; the rapture of the church; and the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ."

This is the doctrinal template I've seen on a majority of UPC churches.

Re: Visiting Cleveland Church of Christ

So I wouldn't go in because of their website. However, I was on my way to see if I could find a Holy Spirit filled Baptist church to visit when while in my car, I had the thought
"Just visit that church (Cleveland Church of Christ) so that you KNOW what they're all about".

I will be with them for Watch Night services and I hope this is a place where I can grow and serve this community.

"Since 1999, Bishop Lincoln C. Haughton, III has served as Senior Pastor and Chief Executive Officer of the corporation."

Oy.

I know, which is why I didn't want to waste my time or theirs by even visiting.

However, I spoke with the Pastor here and we are on the same page regarding salvation, which is MONUMENTAL to me!

Bishop Houghton os a good man. His son died a couple of years ago which was a shock to many people. (Young man in his prime with great expectations for the future.)

Personally I am a little skeptical of the Bishop's statement to you. Unless he has really changed his doctrine, he may have either not been really listening to you or not really wanting to get into said discussion at the moment. COOLJC has always been an organization that taught the necessity of receiving the Holy Ghost to be saved......very interesting indeed!

This church is not affiliated with COOLJC now, but he was ordained with COOLJC many years ago. The literature they actually pass out in the church does not reflect a traditional Oneness Pentecostal view of salvation.

I am convinced he understood my question and the implications and answered it honestly IAW scriptures.

Not all of the women had hats or prayer cloths, but more than half did.

well, they are "affiliated," right? "Mobbed up," iow. The pastor has signed an agreement not to be led by the Spirit. Which doesn't mean he is actually adhering to it--might be a great church, i don't know.
