Places to Eat During General Conference.

You can tell I am hungry. :D

Here is a list of a few MUST places to eat at during the Tampa FL visit to general conference. Anyone can add to the list

1. My first choice is the Columbia Restaurant. This is over in Ybor city, and it is some of the best, THE BEST, cuban/spanish food you will eat. Make sure to get some Spanish Bean Soup or Cuban Black Bean Soup. Either is excellent! The Palomilla steak is great. And the Arroz con Pollo (chicken and yellow rice) is the bomb!!

2. For those that want to spend a lot of money, Berns Steakhouse is a must. They age their beef, that they raise themselves. You can tour the kitchen, and the largest wine cellar in the east southern USA. You can pick out you seafood out a large holding tank. Then for dessert, go up to the dessert room. Plan on spending close to 60 - 70 bucks each. But it is an experience for the wealthy. (my wealthy sister took my wife and I there, and spent over $400 for 4 of us, but her husband drank like a fish too)

3.

BoredOutOfMyMind 06-16-2007 12:03 AM

Is it multiple choice?

I pick #3!

Don't you know on such a spiritual journey you should fast the entire time....................:):)

I was born and raised there, so I am going to eat!!!

Felicity 06-16-2007 09:23 AM

Well, I plan to have breakfast at Cracker Barrel for sure. :)

I wouldn't eat in a place where you had to pay $60-70 per person. No way. Not unless someone else was paying that is. :D

Take one with you. That's what some people do.

We attended general conference with 3 on a couple different occasions. I well know the challenges.

I'm with you. I would never spend that much for one meal and I wouldn't let anyone pay that much for me to eat.

I believe that we are to be modest in all things. I believe it is wrong to spent to much on clothes, cars, meals, etc. We are to be good stewarts of our money.

retsambeW 06-16-2007 09:50 AM

Make these suggestions good, I am taking notes! :D

The great UPC pastime is eating, don't you know? What would GC or even Sunday night be without the great social events at fine dining haunts?

Hey, I still have the habit myself, just not so late at night.

Charlies's Steakhouse $$$$$$ but Sonny's Bar-B-Q is cheap but good. We ate at the Cheesecake factory at the mall it was good as always and of course P.F. Changs is there also. Picadilly Cafeterias are in the area whic we like. So I like them all the expensive and the cheap if the food is good.

No. I have went twice once in Indy and once in Louisville if it was close by I would go for one night. I almost went to Columbus but to drive all the way over there by myeslf was not appealing. And Tampa is way to far. I go to so many meetings I am meeting poor. Tampa is a beautiful city.

OK, I am trying to decide.... I would like to see who is going on this list as it may help make up my mind.

Go and vote! That'll make the whole trip worthwhile. And you'll probably end up elected to an office to boot- so your next trip will be paid for.

This made me think...

Muslims go to Mecca walk for miles there, circle a black stone and fast the entire time for their faith as lost as it is you have to admire some folks dedication to it...

Pentecostals go to Conference, struggle to get to services at times, golf and eat at good resturants and tell the church it's "work".....

interesting to see...

and I include myself among the pentecostal side...

I think we'll have to try it. I looked at the menu, and it sounds pretty good to me and I think the Skinner will like it, too.

The restaurant is beautiful, and the food is excellent. I wish I was going, just so I could eat there again. They have a few others elsewhere, but Ybor City is the best one.

Also, go by a sandwich place and try a cuban sandwich, too. GOOD EATING!!!!! I am now missing my hometown. :sad

What is a "Cuban Sandwich"? Does it have cheese on it? I DO NOT like cheese!!!!! If I can't taste it, I will eat it, like on pizza, but that is about the only thing I will eat it on!!! EEWWWWWWWW!!!!

ask for (minus)- cheese. Make sure to get one made fresh, and not a convenient store one.

There are different flavors of the cuban sandwich. Down in Miami it is just pulled pork on cuban bread. In Ybor and Tampa, the put Genoa salami and ham on them. Cuban bread is similar to french bread, but comes in a 2 ft long loaf. I have an uncle by marriage (that I do not know personally) that owns a bakery in Tampa that bakes cuban bread.

I am really getting hungry!!!

Hey Matt, what is a good hotel, that's not too expensive? (hijacking my own bump here :hypercoffee)

I must say I have been gone too long to know for sure on hotels. I haven't been down there since my mom moved up to Knoxville, TN about 5 or 6 years ago.

Harbour Island is real nice, and I think they have a hotel (but probably $$$$$). It is a nice place to just visit and shop though and if I am remembering correct the Gulf of Mexico is right there to be seen and it is real close to the convention center.

The Aquarium is right there too.

Bayshore BLVD is a nice drive. Lots of neat homes to see.

Take the extra time and drive to Clearwater beach if you want to see water.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned it, but Charley's Steakhouse is incredible! You can even get a Filet well done and it will be melt in your mouth tender. We ate at the ones in Orlando and Tampa. They are elegant - a really nice place to eat.

I did mention it and have eaten in both places in Tampa & Orlando. A very good steak but NEVER cook one well-done that is blasphemy.:nah

I know, I know, everyone tells me that. I cannot stand one little bit of pink though! Ashley eats hers medium rare and I can barely sit at the same table with her. There are very few places that can cook a good well-done steak; Charley's is one of them.

I used to eat al my steaks well done, but I have adjusted to med-well now. But I can't eat it if it has to much pink, or has blood running out.

Steve Epley 09-04-2007 10:25 PM

Steak is not meant to be a burnt offering.:nah

Hoovie 09-04-2007 10:29 PM

I vacillate on this subject. Generally I LOVE steak and lots of it - Med or Med-well, never well done.

Then sometimes I wonder if I could be a vegan... (though right now I am hungery for chicken)

I have seen people gnawing on a totally raw bloody piece of meat and had it turn my stomache...

My BIL used to eat raw hamburger right from the package until my sister made him quit. GROSS!!!!!

My take on steak is just yank the rope off and if you poke him/her and he/she doesn't moo... it is ready to serve! You know, knock the horns off, stab it, slab it and serve it! :D

I guess I am going to hell ... wah!!!

Good luck finding that. This past March my husband & I went down to visit my uncle who pastors there....sounds like it's gonna be a nightmare finding hotel rooms. He said that those around the arena are already booked and the nearby rooms were well over $150 a night. But Tampa's a big city and I'm sure you could find one on Dale Mabry or Fletcher.

I wanna go sooooooooo bad....we even have a room ready. But it's looking like responsibilities here at home are outweighing GC. :sad

Hey Matt...you said you were from Tampa. Did you ever go to camp in Ocala? (That's where I'm from.)
