Power Trip - How to handle
So say someone has a new boss. You and your coworkers perceive that boss is on what you would call a "power trip". What's the best way to handle that situation?

Only if he expects me to share and only if he didn't bring milk.....I prefer chocolate milk...The good stuff that causes clogged arteries and puts you into a diabetic coma just from reading the ingredients list and nutritional information. Or if the cookies brought has raisins...Raisins masquerading as chocolate chips is why we can't have nice things. |
Re: Power Trip - How to handle
how is his power trip affecting you?
are there serious ramifications? if the ramifications are serious, then he should be gently confronted in private. I would make sure my work is impeccable before confronting him. |

OK replying to the original question so we aren't smitten by a plague of rabid girlsc outs with rusty braces being all bitey or something. It's a risk vs reward situation really. How bad do you need your job? Is the power trip behavior threatening your employment or your safety or is it just annoying and grating on your nerves? My advice would be to document the heck out of things and be patient. Usually people like that are bad about thinking that they are held to a different standard than the other employees. Don't be defensive and reactive because that plays into their hands. "Grey Rock" them and don't give them anything to use against you. Keep quiet but keep your eyes and ears open but on the other hand be assertive when lines are crossed. For way too long I let employers rule me with fear because I was afraid of them being angry at me if I pushed back. I let them make fun of me, insult me, threaten and demean me and I did it with the mindset of not rocking the boat and trying to be liked. It's not worth it in the long run because you end up being beaten down and your spirit being broken and people don't give you any respect...I'm talking respect generally afforded to someone just for being a person. The right person will continue to push and escalate just to see what they can get away with. It becomes some sort of sick contest where they will intentially target you just for their entertainment and the entertainment of others. Don't be anybody's whipping boy. Sorry for the rant....It's a sore subject for me and kind of a recent wound that hasn't healed. |

Re: Power Trip - How to handle
Power trippers are highly annoyed by people who aren't concerned about their power tripping. Highly.
Do what you do best. Don't lose sleep over it. Tomorrow is another day. (insert any other GWTW quotes as would be fitting) |
Re: Power Trip - How to handle
1. Document
2. don't give him anything to use against you 3. be patient. Time is usually the great equalizer. Sometimes a new boss thinks he has to assert himself. over time he will chill out as he becomes more comfortable in the role. If the boss is really a problem, they are likely over their head and time will expose them. but document everything because the day may come where you have to defend or explain. |

I'm just sneaking back in here to smack FERD upside the head for all those times he ran into threads and pulled our pony tails. :D
