Do you RV?
I am curious if any of our AFF members own a motorhome, trailer, or 5th wheel? If you do what is it and how much do you use it?
As I near retirement age in a few years I have been doing research and planning for most likely buying a Class A motorhome or 5th wheel for my wife and myself to travel a few months out of the year seeing the USA and Canada. I would love to hear your experiences Rving! |
Re: Do you RV?
We have a 37' class A motor home. We spend a lot of time at local lakes here in North Arkansas but don't use it for long trips. I fish a lot and the kids are home-schooled so it works out that we camp mostly during the months that public school is in session. We like the peace and quite. It's plenty of room for my wife and myself with the two little ones. All the emeneties of home and literally takes minutes to set up. We've owned many bumper pulls and 5th wheels over the years but this is by far the best and easiest to use and own. 7 mpgs but wouldn't do much better in a truck pulling a heavy camper. You'll love it!

Re: Do you RV?
Having actually lived in an RV I wouldn't even blink or look up from what I'm doing if every RV on the planet just disappeared.
Assuming the people inside got left behind, of course. |

My dream since childhood is to own a Class A motorhome but for what we want to do the 5th wheel makes more sense. A big 41'-42' one with five or six slides is pretty much like a nice apartment with the slides out. We would park in a spot for a month or more and explore the area in the truck. However my wife has really bad restless leg syndrom (I now call her problem restless body syndrome as she has nerve issues from two back surgeries that affect her all over) and I pointed out to her the other day shen she had an attack of it while on a short trip in our car that with a motorhome she would be able to go in the back and lay down, etc where pulling a 5th wheel she will be trapped in the cab of the truck until we stop. |

Re: Do you RV?
We had a 39 ft Cardinal 5th wheel. Don't remember the weight but I had a 2011 Ram 3500 one ton 4x4 that I pulled it with. Maybe it was just the brand of camper that was so heavy, but it still threw that heavy truck all over the road. Not fun to pull at all. And that particular truck got 12-13 mpgs when I wasn't loaded and probably 7-8 when loaded.

Re: Do you RV?
I wish I could remember where I saved the picture, but one day we were out driving, and I saw a small boat (not much bigger than a canoe) made into a 2 story houseboat, it was hilarious. It was on dry ground though, sitting on wheels. I wondered if someone pulled it around to live in?

Re: Do you RV?
Don't have any experience with RV'ing other than we do have RVs that we camp in, but nothing big or extravagant. We have a family member who travels the US extensively and lives in one about 9 months out of the year. Because they live and work in the RV, they use a fifth wheel and pull it with a truck that has a Dodge cummins motor. That's about all I can tell you about the specifics, sorry!

Re: Do you RV?
We had a motor home when we evangelized. Lived in it about 3 years. Enjoyed it. Pulled a Saturn vue behind it. Saturns were made to pull. Motor homes are easily set up. My wife could rest while we traveled. I think you would enjoy it. Very comfortable.

We own a Triple E Grand Touring.
Went from coast to coast 6 years in a row. Spend three months in it every summer. |

Re: Do you RV?
Interesting, My wife and I are getting close to retirement age too. Thinking of doing the same thing. One of the things that has been said about the difference of a motor home over a fifth wheel or trailer, is if the motor home breaks down your home is in the shop till it gets fixed. On the other hand if your pulling vehicle breaks down at least you still have a place to live till you get vehicle fixed.
I guess it is six of one half a dozen of the other. I don't see much of a difference in set up between the two, if you have slide outs. They both must be leveled and slide outs put out. It seems to me it comes down to price between a motor home or fifth wheel, with something to pull it. |

My dream is a motorhome but the 5th wheels feel more like a nice NYC apartment. I had firmly decided on a 5th wheel until some medical concerns in the family have made me think a motorhome might be something we need if my wife is to travel comfortably, My favorite 5th wheel is a Forest River Cardinal Estate Edition. Loaded it only has a MSRP of around $120,000 and a best selling price of around $95,000. I can get one I can live with for about $65-70,000 though. |
Re: Do you RV?
I love RV ing, lived in one with my family for about a year while evandelizing.
Would do it again but no room for the kids now. Had a 37 foot prairie schooner with double slide outs, washer dryer, pulled with a chevy 1 ton crew cab. Loved every minute of it. |
