All of those churches use rattlesnakes.

I knew a family who use to come here me preach up in By God West Virginny.
They were the sweetest people, very kind, loved God. But as wrong as the day is long about those snakes, and poison consumption. they loved to have church and they preach along with me at the revivals. I lost track of them years ago.

An arm can really swell up when you get hit with one of those things.

Fingers turn black, fall off.

That aint nothing nice.

Those ones in the video didn't look like rattlers. I guess they had no comprehension of the scripture "thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God."

They do not view what they are doing as "tempting the Lord". That would be more like "Let's see if god keeps His Word or not." Instead, they view the scripture that says "they shall take up serpents" as a command. So they seek to obey the command.

One preacher once said "The Bible says they shall take up serpents. Didn't say they won't get bit."

I guess they would say about that they didn't truly believe then. That's messed up, I thank God for a place that teaches truth and doesn't have some weird interpretation of scriptures like these.

Pure nonsense.

Taking up serpents and drinking deadly poisons is tempting the Lord.
Not it is not an act of faith it is actually an act of presumption.

those dear brethren are simply dangerously mistaken.

Good thing they don't have a pit full of lions, and they each take turns spending a night.

I think it is dying out actually. I think it is more difficult to find a church now a days that actually practices snake handling. I was doing a little research a couple years ago and decided to try to find a snake handling church to visit. It was more difficult finding one than I thought. Most of the ones that I did find out about had less than 10 people. I think their movement is a shadow of what it was at one point.

Re: In Jesus' Name: Taking Up Serpents

One of their congregants told me that there are several churches who at one time practiced it, but due to lawsuits and bad publicity they no longer do.

Go to Jolo West Virginia Church of God with Signs Following. I believe the pastor is Charlie Payne.

They are still out there, they are still keeping the box filled with unhappy reptiles. Burning the soles of their feet, and drinking strychnine.

It's "Jolo Church of the Lord Jesus". Just looked it up. Makes me think they are probably Oneness.

Yeah me too!

Last week I was working on a beam with a 5 inch grinder it caught in a seam. When a grinder catches in a seam, the grinding wheel doesn't turn, but guess what? The body of the machine gets the full load force. The machine crashed right into my face ( was too close to my work) . it knocked me clean off the top of the ladder. 10 feet straight back on my back, since I don't use a paddle switch (don't like'em) the machine starting taring up the ground near my head. I turned over hit the button and shut her down. My face was covered in blood, I thought I knocked out my upper row of teeth, and broke my nose. Went over to my cooler grabbed an ice bag and held it on my face, feeling for my teeth. They were there, halleluyah! Nose was all messed up, and the cartilage was hurt, but no broke nose. Praise Jesus! Yes, looking forward of dying by old ageism. :)

Man, be careful brother you sound like you might be safer taking up serpents. Lol Hallelujah that you're alright though. That sounds like a eye opener.

Wow, I have a simular experience a few years ago I was building a crane for a shop and was cleaning one of my cuts with a 9" grinder, the grinder disc got caught in the cut I was cleaning and slung the grinder right into my face, the disc sliced my forehead open and the body busted my lip in about six places while breaking three of my teeth in half. I still went to church that night and had about $2500.00 worth of dental work done.

Yes sir, the Lord spared me even though of my own foolishness. I was too close to the work, and I was trying to get to a place where I needed caution. On top of that, I was tired, and just wanted to get done. Lesson is, don't get too close to big bad dangerous things, especially when you're wore out. Because in the chance they get loose, they will knock you off the height where you were once standing. :)

Re: In Jesus' Name: Taking Up Serpents

Several weeks ago, I watched both of the documentaries that have been linked here. (Pieces of them at least.)

They all use the one line from Mark 16:18 that says "they shall take up serpents". That's where they get their entire theology that having serpents (or snakes) in their worship services is supported by the Word of God. They're wrong, I'm afraid. They're temping the Lord, and that's against the Bible. Many of you have already said that.

From what I gather, there are not many of these churches left in operation. Most of them are still going in the mountains, but there are a couple in the Georgia and Alabama area. There is actually one in Kingston, Georgia called the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, which just happens to be the name of my home church, a group of holy rolling, non-snake handlers.
