People that never get the story right

You ever know someone that never hears or tells a story the way they heard it? I've known at least two that I can think of in recent memory and one is an ex-member of my church and the other is going there. If someone tells them something they never seem to hear it right the first time or they end up some how retelling it very differently to the point that they sound like liars

chseeads 07-03-2007 07:39 PM

I know what ya mean I know some people that have a few issues with that.

They don't seem to see the problem...either that they have personally or when they retell a story to someone else that can be potentially damaging of someone elses reputation or is just plain telling a lie regardless of how it became a lie

OP_Carl 07-03-2007 08:55 PM

God will give people wisdom . . . . but I've never seen nor heard of anybody being healed of stupid. :o

When I've known people like you've described, their issues typically went a whole lot deeper than just this one. :wacko:uhoh:covereyes

And lastly, I'd like to remind everybody that those of you who think you know everything are terribly annoying to those of us that do ! ! ! :haloplug:killinme

I had a friend like that in college. He was a great storyteller. Then I heard him relate an instance I was a witness to and there was quite a bit of embellishment. I never really trusted a word he had to say after that.

I think a lot of times people like that do it for two reasons, either to slander someone they dislike or to be the center of attention

HeavenlyOne 07-04-2007 11:32 PM

I also think it's a matter of perspective, as well as a short-term memory loss.

There are some people who it seems are just not capable genetically of keeping facts straight.

My mom is one of those people, and she's been that way my entire life.

Fonix 07-05-2007 05:12 AM

Thats how things get started between friends alot of times. Someone will say so and so said something or did something and instead of actually asking there close friend if they did or said it they just walk away without explanation to the actually innocent party.

Did anyone understand what I just said or was it confusing LOL....

Trouvere 07-05-2007 08:25 AM

I do know such people. These are the ones you don't want to confide in what
so ever or tell anything important to.

Monkeyman 07-05-2007 09:04 AM

Sooo, Bill Gates isn't sending me a check for $200??? Awwwwwww

Amen. But not just with confidential stuff, even more public stuff seems to get distorted. But with the confidential stuff, it's not that they even spill the beans, but when they do what they say was not really what you said to begin with. And when they keep doing it you realize you can never trust a person like that with private and even public information.

Scott Hutchinson 07-05-2007 08:09 PM

Prax didn't you say Monkeyman is sending you a check for $ 200 bucks ?

was that how you heard it brother? :-)

Scott Hutchinson 07-05-2007 08:14 PM

Actually I heard you were sending me $500.See I always get the story right.

Praxeas 07-05-2007 08:16 PM

I don't think those that habitually do this are all necessarily liars...I mean with intent. But it's weird to watch it in process whereby you hear a conversation that someone else heard and immediately they jump to some conclusion that was not part of the conversation or read something more into what was said than what was intended.

Or you know of a particular situation or event that someone else heard about too and their version includes some embelishments.

What was the Hee Haw gossip song.......

"We're not ones to go 'round spreadin' rumors
Well, really we're just not the gossipy kind;
No, you'll never hear one of us repeatin' gossip,
So you better be sure and listen close the first time!"

Praxeas 07-05-2007 08:18 PM

In fact I knew someone (well I have known many) that was a habitual liar. He would even lie when there was no reason to lie. It just never made sense to me. It's one thing to lie to cover up something....but when someone lies for no apparent reason?

This person gave several accounts once of his age...was never the same age. It was like each time he guessed! (well maybe he was, but he was a young person)

Many times it is because they are telling the story the way they think folks want to hear it.

I have actually stopped some folks right in their tracks.

So what motivates that? Are they lying?
